Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan

Managers often have the task of focussing players’ attention on the next game, instead of an important subsequent game a few days later, but Brendan Rodgers has an additional task in this respect right now.

You only need to speak to a fellow Celtic fan this week to understand what’s on all of our minds.  Two games over the next four days will make a significant impression on the season, but there is no certainty what the squad will look like when the second match takes place.  The closure of the transfer window in a little over 48 hours will loom just as large as Sunday’s league encounter with Newco.

This is where the manager earns his wages.  While tomorrow’s game against Suduva should present a straightforward challenge, you and I remember another Scottish team, no longer with us, going out of Europe to Lithuanian opposition just months after competing in the Uefa Cup Final.

Get them ready to run through walls for you, Brendan.

  1. What about that young French lad? I think he’s a couple of years younger than Dembelé, so could be worth a punt. Kylian Mbappé or something like that.

  2. So we don’t know what is happening in the background? Who carews I know whatgias happened in transfer window.. We have deliberately weakened the team/squad and lost a fortune by not getting to CL…against a piss poor AEK… Looks like PL wants Huns to win the league….because thats what Dave King would do if he was in change at parkhead

is that like the CB hunt strategy or the perceived John McGinn hunt. Why shouldnt we be sounding out potential strikers, did we not do that with Dembele the first time round? Im sure, as poor at scouting as it appears, we would be at least sounding out potential recruits from a long time back as MD was always gonna go.

We shall wait and see how it unfolds, two up front was showing some exciting potential, but good things never last.

The say Lawyers are the ………. (sorry MIT (not you obviously)) but its the accountants that are for the watching.

  4. Our Club has 2 Billionaires, and it’s awash with cash, but it’s carrying on like at club that’s skint, Boyata ,Dembele, possibly being sold in this Transfer Window,if not then January,I think I speak for a lot of our supporters, disappointed yes ,but if they sign 3 or 4 players, and they are fairly good, that’s fine, but if not, well that will be the end for some on the Celtic Board as for Brendan Rodgers,he will be for the off,

  5. Going by what BR is saying, without having to read between the lines, Lyon is pushing hard for him (which Lyon have also said). Dembele and his reps are talking to Celtic about it.

Between the lines, MD and his agents are pushing for the move which gets him out of the SPFL and into the CL. Celtic are holding out for an offer they can’t refuse and BR knows he will probably get Kenny Miller as he’s a free agent . . .

  6. Deniabhoy / BT – I think I’m ok for Sunday’s game (Sunny in Javea just down from the church). For tomorrow night I thinky best bet is radio Scotland commentary. I’ll survive.

I wasn’t aware of that story. That’s amazing!

*Posted that fae my i-pad so a couple of wee auto corrections there, laggy is Luggy for instance.

I get rather urinated off when I read of Bobby Craig mentioned in the same tone as Paddy Turner, Hughie Maxwell and God forbid Biggles.

When we signed Bobby it was seen as a bit of a coup, here was an experienced player, 27 at the time, with a pretty decent pedigree, he had starred at Third Lanark and Sheffield Wednesday, which prompted high flying, at the time, Blackburn Rovers tae sign him.

However later that year he joined us and looked like the player to help bring through the Kelly Kids, he did get off to a good start scoring a brace in his first league game at broomfield in a 6-1 victory however his form was a bit up and doon as he was still commuting fae Blackburn.

He luckily missed the humphing at hades, Paddy Crerand’s last game but was back in the side the following week and scored 2 up at the pen in a 5-1 thumping of the sheep, big Tam’s debut. Other than a SC win at Brockville that was it until the beginning of March as a severe winter set in.

All fitba and horse racing was cancelled and the building trade shut doon, seemingly that was the reason Cranhill’s Young family of AC/DC fame with a squad of weans tae feed left for Oz.

This freeze was also the reason given for Bobby’s apparent form slump, not so as he was back in the side again at the resumption of the season and starred in a 3-1 victory over the calvinists after being 1 down to an early Wispy goal!!!

After being left out of a cup game against Gala Fairydean he returned the following week to score a hat trick down at Palmerston in a 5-2 win.

After the infamous 0-6 loss with a depleted side at Rugby Park, Jinky’s debut and Dick Madden’s only first team appearance Bobby was again left out of the side but returned after the 1-0 win at Love Street in the SC, he was in the side for the next couple of games but after losing the Glasgow Cup to his old side the Hi Hi, their first win in that tournament in 54 years!!!, due to the winter cancellation, it has to be pointed out though that this was our 4th game in 10 days.

At this point he was in and out of the side and although he was recalled for the humiliating SC replay in the “easy easy easy” hun game he was made one of the scapegoats and in the close-season he was asked to sign a reduced contract for the next season and found his wages for the close-season slashed to £7 a week. I left school that summer and started my time at £3 a week, 15 years of age and nae weans tae feed.

As a married man with four children he refused to re-sign. After 21 appearances and 13 goals, Bobby was transferred to St Johnstone in August 1963 in a swap deal which saw Robert Young, who never kicked a ball for us, head the other way.

I mention the freeze being to blame for Bobby’s loss of form but if my memory serves me well he also suffered from a bunion problem, the same predicament that curtailed wee willie henderson’s career.

After leaving us for Perth he then moved down tae Oldham, over tae TO and then Johannesburg before returning tae the HI Hi where he played in their final game, a 1-5 thumping down at Boagheid.

Although treated pretty unfairly at Parkheid Bobby never lost his love for the club and moved back tae TO where he was instrumental in founding the Toronto CSC and the Toronto Celtic Football Club. For those that watch games over here they have wee Bobby tae thank for that.

It was from his idea that the NAFCSC finally emerged and the wee mhan fae the same part of the woods as Big Packy that started the Bramalea CSC was a great friend of Bobby and widnae hear a bad word about him.

  13. Rodgers said he is still looking to “freshen up the squad” and that work was going on to do so.

He reiterated that his interest in Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna had ended – “that is closed, no more to add,” – and said he is looking to lose some players before Friday.

“The squad is way too big, it is as simple as that,” he said.

Celtics transfer policy is like promising your kids a pony for christmas and on christmas eve you sell their bike with no pony on the horizon

  16. If the board don’t deliver over the next couple of days we will not win this league. Not because we are not capable, but as a result of the black cloud over the club. BR is not happy at the moment and the fans are anxious.

AMAZING that it appears Celtic are once again failing to build from a position of strength – EVEN THOUGH our risk is reduced due to the quality of our manager.

I hope PL comes up trumps otherwise his days will be numbered – the fans will see to that!

Would they be the same “supporters” that are on our board?

i get no enjoyment out of being disappointed but not surprised at the parsimony of those who control the recruitment.

  19. As much as I like Moussa, how many consecutive games did he play for us last year?A club in our position can`t afford the luxury of having a 10 to 15 million striker playing intermittently. On paper a strike force of Moussa and Eddy looks really good, but how often are they going to play together? One or the other always seems to be injured. To be two days away from the transfer deadline and the possibility of losing the best Centre Half and Forward at the club smacks of bad management at board and playing level. If we lose these two please no more loan signings or projects, lets have players who can slot straight into the team.

We signed Eddy as a replacement for Dembele who hadn’t left and we let go Armstrong who needs a replacement and replaced Boyata before he has left with a guy who needs replaced but hasn’t been seen. This assumes Hendry was replacing Sviatchenko.

If you go from 3 strikers to 2 and the manager has previously said we need 3 do you not need 3… especially when he wanted to play 2 up front?

This is worse than the Willo window this is nightmare on Kerrydale st.

  22. Here’s what I heard earlier in the summer. Source as good as it gets. Take it or leave it.

No 1 priority; a right back, music to my ears. Other targets, no particular order; centre half, left back cover for KT (as they expected a big bid), sign John McGinn and a winger.

    Result: Izzy.

  23. In Preseason and the early CL games it looked as if BR was going to reshape the team this season around our two young French strikers forming a devastating partnership.

His plans for the season could very well be in ruins. No amount of spin can alter the fact we’ve systematically gone about the destruction of a double treble winning team this transfer window should Dembele and Boyota go. It’s a shocking piece of management from our board.

  24. fortunately mikey J looks like he can do a lot off damage – his pace, especially those important first 5-10yards is frightening. He passes with pace and precision (I hate players who pass the ball slowly – arghhhh) .

no he can’t play center half!

  25. From what started on a high with the French Eddy this is looking like finishing as the most frustrating and disappointing window I can remember.

We’ve lost an important midfielder in Armstrong. Not strengthened in the key areas that needed help (even though they’ve been known for some years). Eduoard although a good signing isn’t actually a new player and at his young age blows hot and cold.

And to top it off it looks like we will lose a centre back, a position we needed to strengthen in, for a fraction of the price we could have achieved a mere week ago. Not only losing millions but also having a negative affect on the squad, the management and the support.

Rumour has it Porto were sniffing about N’tcham, I doubt they can afford him but I’m sure it will have unsettled him.

We look like losing our most valuable player, again no doubt at a reduced fee due to lack of CL football, without having a replacement lined up. We’ve known Dembele would eventually go since he arrived so not having someone lined up is unforgivable. I’m sure some will say how do you know but let’s not kid ourselves like the Orcs did, it’s not going to happen.

In an ideal world we’d keep a hold of him but failing that we’d sell him and Boyata, get someone like Azmound in to replace him, add the French defender from Le Harve and a quality experienced pro on loan or seasoned pro like Terry on a short term deal… But we don’t live in an ideal world do we.

I used to support the board and the business plan but it’s went too far. Our lack of commitment or success in the transfer market has cost us the CL, the money that it brings and the inflated player values when it comes to selling and attraction when buying. The aim with the business model the past 5 years should have been to keep bringing in players to improve the team, develop further and sell on, allowing us to bring in new players with increased potential and the occasional finished product, gradually trading up. That has stopped and now we look like we could be back years in the progress we’ve made. I don’t know if it’s BR, PL, Lee Corrington or someone else but they’ve been caught sleeping and as a support we cannot accept that from our custodians.

  26. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    SANDMAN on 29TH AUGUST 2018 3:38 PM

“Transfer fees keep us in the loop, like it or not; that’s the predicament of playing in the SPL; pauper’s league and us would-be-kings.”

The CL keeps us in the loop. We made over £90m last year without any major transfers. The money from Europe this year was greater and we also made it to the Europa League. Our turnover would be touching if not over £100m, again, without transfers.

Our failure to improve has contributed to our being out of the CL and now, the apparent subsequent need to sell.

  27. Joe Filippis Haircut on

We all knew that if a decent offer came in for Dembele we would sell him every Celtic player is for sale if the money is right so 15 to 20 million is not to be sniffed at.I know we all get frustrated with big Peter from time to time but look back in history and see the rubbish that had his job Peter is by far the best Chief Exec, we have ever had and it will be a very sad day for Celtic when we lose him. I know most of us are unhappy at the lack of incoming players in this window but lets wait until the window closes then we can show our frustration if we have not brought in any new players. On Sundays game we are on a hiding to nothing if the huns get a draw it will be hailed as the greatest draw in football history and if they win they will be looking for a Knighthood for Gerrard . If we win it will be called the biggest flook in football history. It will be the toughest game for a while and we know what camp the referee is in no wonder some Celtic fas are concerned.H.H.

  28. Looking as if this will be a very poor window if we lose Moussa and Boyata without proper replacements coming in.

Should that happen the board will need to let ST holders in to the EL games for nothing if they want any sort of crowd!

Until this point I thought that the blame for this close season’s shenanigans lay equally between the manager and the CEO. If these moves materialise without genuine quality replacements being signed, then I would be 100% on the side of those who blame PL!

I find it staggerthat we have collapsed so quickly during the summer, to the point of the league looks as if it might actually be a contest!

Heads should roll over this fiasco but of course they won’t but who would blame Brendan if he started to look for a club that had some real ambition beyond squirrelling away money for hotels and museums at the expense of the team on the park!

    HH

  29. The most frustrating thing about this all is we kept hearing no amount of money can guarantee you to win/compete/qualify. But it’s quite clear that £3-5m would almost certainly have been more than enough to strengthen enough to qualify this year and the return would have been minimum 500%. I’m not a betting guy but that was a chance we should have taken. We then wouldn’t have to worry about losing our top players and the money not being available to replace them.
