Get your kicks, from Game 66

280

How ballsy is Scott Sinclair? Arriving as a 73rd minute substitute, his every touch was booed by Motherwell fans. Dozens of missiles were thrown at him (and other Celtic players) as nearby stewards failed even to look in the direction of the culprits.

Then with three minutes remaining and Celtic a goal down, he told Leigh Griffiths to step away from the penalty spot. The kick itself – high into the top corner, was unstoppable, but goodness, not without risk.

With so much negative focus on him, taking that penalty was the equivalent of looking the Devil in the eye. He will be stronger for the experience.

Now others are left asking, “What will it take to beat Celtic, even once?” Legs and minds are tired among the squad, you can see it. Leigh, normally so sharp, was ponderous when his best chance occurred. Craig Gordon looks like he needs a holiday. That punch, the clearance which cleared no one and those kick outs! What’s going on, Craig?

There was a fascinating moment involving Tom Rogic when we were a goal down. A loose ball was there to be challenged for, but Tom didn’t quite throw himself at it, prompting clear feedback from the travelling fans. What he did was take control of proceedings from then on.

His defence-splitting pass for Callum McGregor led to the penalty and gave us our kicks, on game 66.

The penalty itself followed a goalkeeping error. Carson saved a gilt-edged chance from McGregor, but instead of knocking the ball out for a corner, he kept it alive with a side-swipe. McGregor put his body between ball and defender. Then waited.

The not too subtle message from Motherwell after Sunday’s cup final is that they were incorrectly punished for putting arms around an opponent in the box. On an intellectual level, they knew they were banged to right (or they would have appealed the red card), but the emotional part of the brain took over.

“It’s OK to put your arms around an opponent to inhibit his progress inside the box” was the subliminal message. Just think, if Stephen Robinson had told his players not to take such actions after the final, Rose might have kept his arms to himself last night.

Every referee in the country knew Craig Thomson was hung out to dry on Sunday after making a correct penalty decision. Willie Collum would have prepared for last night’s game clear in the knowledge that no amount of wining would prevent him making an unpopular decision.

Would he have made the same penalty decision if Motherwell and the assembled media did not round on Craig Thomson a few days earlier? Perhaps. But it is never wise to harden the resolve of a referee.

Oh, and yes, that was our first penalty of the league campaign, no one else in the division was penalty-less until last night.

  1. Hello again all you young rebels.

As per normal we’ve got the usual suspects trying to tarnish

Celtics name, it was ever thus and for this auld tim, well i just

have a wee quiet laugh to myself at their sufferin :-))

    Oz tims

Sorry to tell you all our big Celtic day and BBQ in the park is

now cancelled due to inclement weather, after a run of nearly

two weeks of beautiful sunny 30 odd deg. days monsoon type

rain will hit the peninsula today and continue till Monday.

Our CSC committee will meet to decide if we can fit in another

Sun. before Christmas, however it won’t impact on our visit to

the sick and underprivilaged kids and nurses, they will still get

their pressies from our club and the Celtic family.

Thanks for your reply earlier and the contact details for Paul 67. Paul has been in touch and given me an explanation as to why my post was deleted which I respect. However, that’s the second post I’ve had deleted on CQN, there won’t be a third.

So it’s farewell and adieu to CQN. I wish the blog all the best for the future.

  3. Tom English going from never a penalty again to New angle on the penalty. I can absolutely see how the referee gave it but still believe it was very soft.

Still can`t bring himself to say it was a foul inside the box.

  4. Michael Stewart Retweeted Michael Stewart

Got to be honest and say that having seen a different angle just now it would appear it wasn’t as horrendous a decision as I first thought

  5. TOSB,

I very nearly flounced over a deleted post, but in retrospect am glad I didn’t,

Since then got much enjoyment & met some great ghuys I otherwise would have never met.

Sometimes we get carried away here & take ourselves too seriously, really it’s just chat & opinions & we all make mistakes including Paul & The Moderators.

If you feel you need to take a wee Sabbatical then do & come back if & when you like.

If you enjoy it here don’t cut yourself off unless you absolutely have to.

  6. Good Stuff F, I’ll see you there, I take it you have Lynchiebhoy sorted.

He is a very genuine Supporter, brilliant of you to help him out.

  7. Tom English – AGAIN! – this guy is never a journalist. Simply reaches for any controversy which surrounds Celtic and sticks the boot in.

Never forget his sycophantic IV with Craig Whyte, when every Tim with a keyboard could give you chapter and verse on his heroic levels of dodginess, and Tom softballs question after question to him, then concludes the man might be some sort of enigmatic mystery genius.

When a quick look at his suit and his haircut just screamed – CONMAN!

As for Motherwell.. Dearie me. Dearie, dearie me… Perhaps the growing noise about racist chanting and sectarian singing coming from the, ahem, “family” club was in danger of becoming a crescendo, so we should see this Sevco-esque Statement as a muddying the waters exercise.

Cynical or deluded, take your pick…

  8. Angelgabriel/Corkcelt- love this type of exchange on CQN where genuine Celtic supporters step in and help each other out fir in this case, Lynchiebhoy.

Keep up the good name of Celtic!

    HH to you both.

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Italiabhoy, I completely agree. This has news management all over it.

Deflect , deflect then deflect some more , knowing full well our media will go into big bad Celtic attack mode , which is their speciality.

The issue of our players’ safety , from their tackling and missile throwing fans , is a secondary issue to them.

The fact they have never acknowledged the atrocious tackle on Moussa confirms this as a PR blame transferral exercise.

In 2012 when we beat them 5 nil in a Friday night game, when a part of our support, not the Green Brigade, damaged seats , Motherwell were willing to keep it quiet as part of their support did the same the previous week at New Douglas Park. That’s why I find convenient for them to release this statement . Part of it sounds similar to the Hearts statement a few years ago.

Would Motherwell have made this statement if any other club’s fans were involved.?

  10. WITS, Lynchiebhoy is from another County beloved of the Dubs, The Royal County of Meath.

In case any Scottish Bhoys are scratching their heads about an Irish County being labeled Royal, the Royal refers to the ancient High Kings of Ireland who were reputed to be based in Tara & has nothing at all to do with Lizzies clan.

  11. Gordybhoy 64.

There has been 5 put on @Celtic spares at various times today.

I don’t know if they are still available.

    Good luck.

    Night all.

    Hail Hail

  12. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Our Henderson brothers each scored a cracking goal yesterday against St Johnstone. We won 3 1.

Regan Hendry , our captain in the Uefa youth games, has been training with our first team squad today. He’s a fine player.

  13. MMPD, your post brought back many memories. My family are from Greencastle and of course we were always in Moville. I remember the Dougan brothers, having seen them in their student days at church in Moville.

Actually my aunt Maggie’s husband was the butcher in Charlie Crumlish’s at the t op of the square in Moville, a rival of the Dougans. Small world.

Did anyone at the game last night see the damage of seats, toilets, etc that Motherwell are saying our support caused? I remember they did this once before and wee Chic was all over it in his report of the game. Later if I remember correctly it was shown that the seats that were supposed to be destroyed had been broken for sometime.

  14. Was on the Christmas raz (in bliddy November! ) last night so didn’t see the match. Speed reading today and discovered MIT was blowing out some candles yesterday. Breithlá shona duit, as we say around these parts. Hope you had a goodun’. Tell Doire I said Madra maith. She’ll understand.

Bad Ass for me on Tuesday (sounds like I’m expecting a dose of the jellybellies ). I expect I’ll find some company to raise a glass to your health.

    Hail Hail.

  15. Grant Russell, formerly of STV, recently appointed Motherwell PR guru. Paw prints are all over today’s embarrassing statement.

  16. I hope a few well deserved rests are in order for Saturday.

Motherwell can’t play us 3 days in 6 days.

Destroy the moaners with 5+ goals Saturday CELTIC, preferably first half. ;)

  17. Plenty motivation for Celtic to really thrash these Motherwell Pondlife this weekend.

An astonishing lack of objectivity re last nights disgraceful performance by Dallas at Ibrox.

  19. WITS, Thanks for that link, found it very interesting. As you say some very interesting names there.

I soldiered with one of the lads who took part in the Brookeborough raid, where South & O’Hanlon died but obviously 7 or 8 years afterwards.

I also knew the famous Daithi O’Connell who also took part in that raid.

It’s like another lifetime now, Memories.
