Getting a good manager job

351

When Gordon Strachan left Celtic in 2009 the overwhelming calls on CQN were for the club to go for broke and appoint Davie Moyes as manager. Again last year, when we were replacing Ronny Deila, Davie and Brendan Rodgers were Celtic’s top choices for the job.

This week Davie, one of the most awful central defenders to have played for Celtic in my time, underwhelmed West Ham fans when given the job of rescuing them from relegation.

Davie did well in his first managerial job at Preston, then rescued Everton from the failing hands of Walter Smith, taking the club on an 11-year run of what is regarded as success around those parts. Throughout his Everton era he was a hot prospect. The Manchester United job was his four years ago, but little has gone his way since. He left Old Trafford, Real Sociedad and Sunderland under a cloud in quick succession.

We could have had him before Sunderland last year and we would have been delighted at the appointment too. It may even have worked out well. Despite that, I don’t expect him to inspire West Ham to midfield mediocrity. The West Ham job is one of many wonderfully well-paid bad jobs in England. They may avoid relegation, but Davie will never be liked.

Brendan Rodgers will receive regular calls from representatives of West Ham-like clubs, with plenty of money but little hope of success. The Celtic job is far from perfect, but there are few better gigs.

No idea of the guy on the field but the guy beside Sloth from the Goonies in the studio is Gerry Taggart a former team mate of Neil Lennon and fellow Lurgan man. No poppy unless the little button on his jacket is a metal one.

McGinn has battling qualities that are lacking in the current Celtic midfield (Broony apart), but his lack of pace would be my main concern. In a Celtic team that is.

It would be remiss of me not to seeing my great grandfather was called Owen, my father was called Owen and I have a son called Owen. Simples.

Thought John McGinn was best player on the pitch, just ahead of KT. McLean in midfield looked lost.

No one can accuse Broony of having blistering pace. He said earlier in the season that it was good now to have others do his running for him. McGinn doesn’t need to have blistering pace. He is brave and a great passer of the ball, especially the long, diagonal pass. He is as tenacious as a bulldog and has great drive. While Broony is nowhere near ready to retire, we will regret it if we don’t secure McGinn soon. He is a wonderful young player.

I’m sure I have bored people with this one but here we go again.

My Dad, the smallest, was “big Owen”. My cousin was “middle Owen” because he was and I, the tallest was “wee Owen”.

Was up home for Dena’s daughters wedding, my niece, and was messing with my nephews son Eoghan by saying “hello Eoghan I’m Owen too, but we can’t both be Owen so I will do Monday, Wednesday and Friday and you do the other days and we can spilt Sunday’s” his wee face as he tried to process this was priceless.

Stealing that one for the festive visit.

It all started when middle Owen visited Lurgan from Glasgow and the confusion at meal times became too much. I was the youngest but still laugh at the wee bit.

It also ties in with Dena being may “big” sister.

Then again she used to call me “skinny” but that was a long time ago.

  19. Ah for the love of whomever you hold dear, sky sports news are scrapping the bottom of the barrel now. They just show an update on the condition of a surfer. No harm to the guy, I hope he makes a full recovery, but that is considered newsworthy? They are suffering big time

    Hi TET,

Got it delivered this week, for one of the Grand Daughters who loves that stuff, as a wee Christmas pressie (all the grand kids ALWAYS get a book from me for Christmas.). Mistakenly clicked the ebook version first so I’ve got some pre-Christmas reading for myself! Win Win, eh?

I assume they are talking about the guy who broke his back surfing a 60ft wave. At that level I think most people would accept that surfing is a sport.
