Getting buy-in from senior players

1079

Delighted to see Brendan Rodgers is down to business at Lennoxtown, three weeks before the players return for preseason training. It’s interesting that he arranged an early opportunity to meet Scott Brown over a meal, and that this was made public.

Getting buy-in from senior players was one aspect of the job Ronny Deila allegedly didn’t achieve. The rights and wrongs of this can wait for Ronny’s autobiography, although you may wish to express an outsider’s opinion. All that matters to Brendan is that no one is able to speculate about the same issue on his watch.

There’s not much a manager can do three weeks before training starts than eat dinner with the captain, scout players and watch videos. I expect Brendan to have seen every minute of every Celtic game last season by the time players get back; there is lots to learn. In particular, what went wrong at the back to a team which broke defensive records in each of the previous two campaigns. You may wish to express an outsider’s opinion.

Those in the know warned us that blue collar crime is particularly difficult to prosecute, and so it’s transpired. Only Craig Whyte now faces trial in the Rangers fraud case, which saw remaining charges against Duff and Phelps’ administrators David Whitehouse and Paul Clark dropped at the High Court in Glasgow this morning. It’s far from a satisfactory outcome.

Good to hear the losing Scottish Cup final manager, who was left with some bears in Japanese forest for seven days by his parents, has been found safe and well, even if he has nothing to say for himself.

    Tgcw,

I was on having a wee flutter on the Oaks there and noticed he’s shot right in on the ol betting.

We’ll have somewhere between 10-20% on any profit I’d imagine.

  2. Amazed that there could ever be questions over such highly paid professionals attitudes on and off the pitch.

Let’s be honest, who in reality doesn’t think that his boss is an arsehole?

Asked to eat differently and run aboot more? Aye, a real inconvenience when you’re earning more in a few weeks what most folk do in a year.

If you don’t like the boss’s approach, you keep your mouth shut, get on with it according to his wishes, and have a moan to your pals in the sanctity of your own living room.

That’s what you do as you have pride in your profession, and that at the very least ensures there’s meat and two veg on the table every night for your family.

    Hunt them Brendan.

I told them when doing the huddle we turn our back on the team.

Didn’t seem to be what they where after!

  5. I have bemoaned the lack of professionalism among Celtic players on CQN way too often. If our manager is informed that this really was the case last season, particularly among our experienced players, he must show them the door. They have cheated not just Ronnie Deila; they have cheated us, the support.

  6. Got to feel a bit sorry for Southampton. They’ve developed a lot of good talent and had a couple of decent managers – all moved on quickly

  7. Surely the article should read ‘white collar crime’?

    It’s scandalous but not surprising.

‘money speaks for money, the devil for his own.’ as the song says.

The poor get the law. The rich abuse justice.

We are past the point where a revolution would be justifie.

But we keep putting on our ragged trousers and sacrificing ourselves so the rich might live in the comfort and freedom from the law that they deserve.

Why would we expect any other outcome? The only reason a rich man loses in court is if a richer one wants him to.

I think you’ll find we have provided them with the spine that has formed the basis of their side’s success under Koeman. Watched the play Arsenal at the Emirates this year and Forster, Van Dijk and Wanyama were the 3 best players on the park.

I’d expect Koeman to take some, if not all of them to Everton and hopefully provide us with some lucre from the sell on clauses.

In fact, I’m not feeling sorry for them at all now.

  9. Scott Brown & Craig Gordon were 100% supportive of Ronnie Deila.

If he had paid all the tax and N.I contributions when they were due then the mighty Rangers would have went belly up mid season making it totally impossible to sell the oldco/same club myth.

    Went something like this:

Valcke- That was a great World Cup you put together Sepp. You should get some sort of bonus for that.

Blatter- Thanks Jerome. It was indeed a great success. A bonus you say? Nice idea. You should get a bonus for that.

Valcke- Well, thank you Sepp. Of course we’ll need to speak to Deputy Sec Gen Kattner about it. He’s the guy who runs payroll.

Blatter- Right enough. Leave it to me. I’ll speak to markus and get back to you.

    Later…

    Blatter- Markus! How are you?

Kattner- I’m well Sepp. And you?

Blatter- Yes, I’m well too. Listen, given the great success that was the last World Cup, I thought it would be in order to award you and Sec Gen Valcke a little bonus for your sterling work.

Kattner- Thank you Sepp. That’s very kind. I’ll speak to Jerome and get back to you.

    Later…

Kattner- Sepp. About that bonus idea. Jerome and I have been talking it through, and we think it wouldn’t be appropriate to take a bonus for our work, unless you were awarded a bonus too.

Valcke- Yes Sepp. Markus is right. 2010 was your show. A Blatter masterpiece. And a profitable masterpiece at that.

Blatter- Profitable you say? How much?

Kattner- Well, provisional figures put the number at around 200 million US. A great result for FIFA and no doubt.

Valcke- From my experience in the commercial world, it’s typical for the Executives who made the deal happen to get a slice of the upside.

Blatter- Really? Why, that had never crossed my mind. What kind of sum do you have in mind?

Kattner- For a deal on this scale, 10% would be reasonable.

Valcke- Yes, 10% is bang on the money. I’d suggest a fair and ethical split would be along the lines of 4% to the President, and 3% to each of his Lieutenants.

Blatter- Of course, we’d need Executive approval for such a payment.

Kattner- Of course we would. And here we all are. Let’s convene an Executive meeting.

Blatter- I hereby convene a meeting of the Executive. I confirm that a quorum is present.

Valcke- I propose an Executive Remuneration Scheme be adopted to improve employee relations and staff retention, providing a reward for loyalty and performance for key Executives along the following lines…

    Kattner- Seconded.

    Blatter- Motion carried. Meeting closed.

    Applause.

Blatter- Thank you Gentlemen. Markus, make sure and include that little provision in this month’s payroll. Now, anyone for a glass of Bolly?

    Much later…

Valcke- Sepp, you’ll never guess how profitable 2014 was.

Blatter- Really? Should I give Markus a shout?

Valcke- Good idea. I feel a short Executive meeting coming on.

  15. TinyTim – In the madness that is the EPL everything in the summer will be top price. Ridiculously over inflated and paid for by clubs earning obscene amounts from BT and Sky. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lukaku go for 40-50m and he’s only in the better than average category of striker, where there is a perceived glut in the market.

I hope the nature of Brendan’ s discussions with commons et all are along the lines of buy in or eff off.

If they are allowed to get away with the same crap with another manager, I will chuck it after 50 odd years of supporting Celtic.

They cheated us last year with their antics. If it happens again and they get away with it, the game is up.

When Ronny Deila arrived at Celtic and stated his football philosophy, I posted on here that we had four players on our books who didn’t fit the template.

They were, Samaras, who I loved, Mulgrew, Stokes and Commons.

When Ronny Deila arrived at Celtic and stated his football philosophy, I posted on here that we had four players on our books who didn’t fit the template.

They were, Samaras, who I loved, Mulgrew, Stokes and Commons.

Samaras’s departure – the main reason we did so badly in Europe.

Mulgrew – classic example of intelligent passer lacking in pace who Ronny & plenty on here saw no value in.

Stokes – forced to play wide midfield, notched up the most assists, then unceremoniously dumped for not failing as hard as he was supposed to.

Commons – saved Ronny’s 1st season (along with Guidetti early on). More assists/goals per min than any other midfielder this and last season. One of our most important players for Europe and the most intelligent player in the team.

The last 2 years have been a dirge, with mediocre players held up as shining lights while genuine talent too often sat on the sidelines.

  24. To our gallant requisitioners – activism of any kind, particularly where it involves ‘speaking truth to power’ and where the reactionary opposition is loud, is a hard thing to do.

    It takes a personal toll.

    I speak from experience.

And I admire hugely anyone who takes a stand.

Huge credit to all involved. The genie is out of the bottle, the light thrown on the dark recesses of Scottish footballs’ dodgy governance.

We talk of playing the game ‘the Celtic way’. I think it extends to playing life that way too – honestly, with endeavour, determined, dogged, doing the right thing with fairness at the heart of it all.

Whatever else they’ve done or are yet to achieve these guys have done it The Celtic Way.

    Thanks to you all.

  25. Two things are going to happen on the field of play in Scotland this year for sure:

    1 Celtic will improve.

2 Sevco are going to be humiliated on numerous occasions by a variety of teams.

The rest is up in the air.

But those two things – certainties.

How do I know? I look at the facts.

2016/17 is going to be a blast for Timothy!!
