Getting buy-in from senior players

1079

Delighted to see Brendan Rodgers is down to business at Lennoxtown, three weeks before the players return for preseason training. It’s interesting that he arranged an early opportunity to meet Scott Brown over a meal, and that this was made public.

Getting buy-in from senior players was one aspect of the job Ronny Deila allegedly didn’t achieve. The rights and wrongs of this can wait for Ronny’s autobiography, although you may wish to express an outsider’s opinion. All that matters to Brendan is that no one is able to speculate about the same issue on his watch.

There’s not much a manager can do three weeks before training starts than eat dinner with the captain, scout players and watch videos. I expect Brendan to have seen every minute of every Celtic game last season by the time players get back; there is lots to learn. In particular, what went wrong at the back to a team which broke defensive records in each of the previous two campaigns. You may wish to express an outsider’s opinion.

Those in the know warned us that blue collar crime is particularly difficult to prosecute, and so it’s transpired. Only Craig Whyte now faces trial in the Rangers fraud case, which saw remaining charges against Duff and Phelps’ administrators David Whitehouse and Paul Clark dropped at the High Court in Glasgow this morning. It’s far from a satisfactory outcome.

Good to hear the losing Scottish Cup final manager, who was left with some bears in Japanese forest for seven days by his parents, has been found safe and well, even if he has nothing to say for himself.

    Masty,

They said that you are allowed back in, as long as you don’t bring thon duff singer, TD67.

    Up over Goal,

It wasn’t because of their abilities or value to the team, that I singled those four players.

I just couldn’t see them fitting into his professed style of play.

To tell the truth, we weren’t a good team to watch under the two and a half previous managers, ( NL, GS and half of MON’s tenure).

I was hoping that we were going to get a fast moving, good passing, aggressive closing down, kind of team, therefore I couldn’t see how those guys would fit in.

Hopefully BR will have the answer.

7.30 pm radio news featured a normally sane fitba journo claiming he wouldn’t be surprised to see “Zlatan “signing for Napoli.Allegedly , Napoli will have the necessary cash when they sell Higuain to Liverpool for silly money.

  4. I fully expect Celtic not to issue a statement regarding Resolution 12.

I expect them to go about it in a professional manner and now write directly to UEFA, who should confirm at some point that they have received a communication from our club.

Talking of Karma and stars aligning, could there have been better timing of the ad in the Swiss Press coinciding with the news about Blatter and his cronies pockling the FIFA accounts? I think not.

Are these doors that being slammed shut affecting the anticipated release of the statement from Celtic or is that being delayed for other reasons ( I’m aware you can’t give us the detail, but is the delay due to the aforementioned door slamming?)

Big Zlatan story now growing legs, Celtic 7/4 second favourites to sign him after Manure. Obviously not going to happen but will have one or two zombies keeching their breeks.

Just where will money for Zlatan come from. That is if it needed at all. Which I doubt.

  10. So Dave Swarbrick is dead, 20 years after he first passed on. Must have played for Rangers at one time. I was with a band from belfast called The McPeakes at the time, and opened for them in Dublin and Belfast. Some band–Richard Thompson on guitar, Dave Pegg, who played reels on the bass,Dave Mattacks, great session drummer (Soft Machine etc), Simon Nichol, and Swarbrick. Thompson was only about 20 at the time, but what a player. After the concerts, Pegg,Nichol and Thompson would be up for a bit of a music session, but not Swarbs. Only ever played for the money. A good player for his time, but no Frankie Gavin or anywhere near it. Still sad at his passing though.

  11. I presume people know I was talking about Fairport Convention when mentioning Swarbrick. SoT has probably got a back catologue.

    ========================================

    Not such a ludicrous proposition.

    Big Zlato for a year:

    Extra 5,000 season tickets?

Shirt sales? Sponsors? Online single-match ticket sales?

An extra 10,0000 on the gate for the like sof Ross County at home?

Big fella would automatically bring in millions, pay for himself.

Probably the deal we should offer him, lol.

  17. I agree with those who say bring Zlatan in, obviously cos he is awesome, but the figures would stack up for themselfs.

It’s situations like this that a high quality CEO, one who is not afraid to take a chance would be on the phone to Zlatan and won’t take no for an answer.

  18. thetimreaper on

    Complete the following sentence….

John Brown….Celtic have signed Zlatan because they are running scared of…..

  19. Looking for clarification

Has Carlton Cole and Stefan Scepovic left the building yet ?

Nadir Cifcti and Anthony Stokes to follow them ? Along with Colin Kazim Richards ?

Rumours on news now that both Birmingham and Rotherham want Kris Commons ?

James Forrest moves into last 6 months of contract and Charlie Mulgrew less than 4 weeks ( I would keep Charlie). Does Darnell Fisher have a future with is, also into closing stages of current deal

Rumoured interest in Efe Ambrose and Stefan Johansen ?

And Tyler Blacket loan deal up

There at least 9 from that that could potentially go and wouldn’t be missed – some may say more ?

Replace with 4, ( as long as Brendan has scouts them :-))

There is a few others in the squad I would also create space with moving on

    Hail Hail

  20. I see David Weir as the new ‘Walter’- in the sense that I think Warburton will leave him to it – a la Souness.

Warby is in the same place as Stubbsy – and will move on as a winner, albeit a lower league winner. His CV can say that he brought the mighty ‘Rangers’ back to where they belong – and there are those who will swallow it.

Next season could be very mediocre indeed for ‘Rangers’, in the light of high expectation from the BB mob, and hopefully fireworks from Celtic Park. Their fans will become hostile if nothing is won. Aberdeen, Hearts, and some others will be stronger, they could hit Rangers hard and any upside from last season’s promotion will be quickly washed away. A couple of heavy defeats to Celtic, similar to MON’s 6-2, would be disastrous for Warbs.

The same with Stubbs – there will be key players leaving Hibs and there can be no real confidence in them going up – Dundee Utd will, in my opinion, be favourites, and the dreaded play offs could again beckon.

Weir, who now seems centre-stage, was an Everton ‘hero’ of Barton and was instrumental in his signing – also interesting that Rafa is staying at Newcastle – cue McPartland heading for the door with the man in the hat.

The story will be spun that “David” is a young manager, an Ibrox legend, and must be given time to make his mark – a top six finish will be touted as success in his first season.

  21. Cowiebhoy

I know Brendan will have seen vids and the like, but till he sees the players up close and personal like, I can’t see him making too many decisions either way.

I came across this the other day and immedietly thot that Pedro must have seen it.

Well worth the watch, short but straight to the point.
