Giakoumakis and the supporting cast

185

Giorgos Giakoumakis spectacular header to give Greece a late lead against Kosovo last night showed to an international audience what we have seen since his return from injury earlier this year.  Giorgos is a talent and his acquisition from VVV Venlo for around £2.5m was spectacularly good business.

His solitary year in the Netherlands saw him finish top goal scorer in a season VVV were relegated.  Celtic picked him up so cheaply as his career stalled after signing for AEK in 2017.  He scored only once for the Athens club and saw two loan moves fail to spark his career.

At 27, Giorgos is not going to attract a lucrative offer from England.  He is a player we should be able to rely on for the foreseeable future.  When Kyogo is fit, Giorgos will struggle to make the starting line-up, but having a supporting cast of players with a point to prove is a big part of winning.

G Mak and Kyogo are mobile enough, and smart enough to play a lot of games in the same team

Don’t have much to add on Paulo’s leader about Jacko’s usefulness, but I am afraid to say I think the new black away top looks too much like pyjamas!

Don’t cha know there were no bidders in Holland for GG despite his Eredivsie credentials?.

  5. Agreed Paul67…

Still think we need a decent level 3rd choice CF. We don’t seem to produce them anymore at Celtic (and Scotland) so we may be forced to include it as a possible in our wishlist.

Not beyond the realms of possibility that both GG and Kyogo are unavailable at times next season.

Jota and Abada are widemen and Maeda more impactful out wide too.

We also need more goals from midfield. None hit double figures. For another day.

All good problems to solve and ones we’ll tackle…

    Enjoy Turkey.

I was due to fly out yesterday. But had to cancel, due to mother in law being admitted to hospital on Friday.

Wanted to move holiday to September, but Jet 2 wouldn’t let me.

I think centre forwards are the exception to the rule.

    They are like gold dust.

Even in a years time, if he continues to score plenty. he would be looked at by middle tier and below clubs in England top league.

What I think would let him down from that level would be his technique.

  9. If Maeda gets a good rest and regains his first touch and finishing there will be a battle upfront for starting places. I think Kyogo and Gia are both excellent and will share starting duties.

A wee story from previous thread.

Bumble bee strip wasnt my fav but my wee ma when she worked for Celtic Pools asked for the club for a prize for a St Patricks night raffle at St Brendans Yoker.she managed to get a bumble bee strip that was signed by all the players.Big Andy Ritchie then proceeded to draw my ma’s name out for first prize and she won the signed strip…she wouldnt accept prize and it got drawn again.

The top is very much ‘in’ of the Manchester indie seen and rave scene late eighties early nineties, probably repitition of some other period in time. That’s style is big over the world, if you look at how innovative and the broad reach of Adidas in the US and urban culture I it believe it will sell beyond Celtic circles, plus oor young team will love.

    Marketing Marketing Marketing.

Regards Gia, think he’s a great fit for us just change some of the style when he plays or we need a goal. Nightmare to play against particuarly with quality of crosses.

  11. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

GG should allow us to manage Kyogo better. Rest him for some games, take him off after 70 in others.

Great news on CCV. Hopefully Jota to follow soon.

  12. We need Giakoumakis, and one other, because Kyogo will be booted off the park, week in week out, with impunity.

Aye now you say that, I can see that Madchester vibe you cite right away. It wasn’t for an old punk like me then and still isn’t now. Will be good if it swells the club and sponsor coffers. Still looks like jim-jams from city cash tailors or summat IMO.

Re recruitment; still think we need an older midfielder with a bit of dig and an eye for goal. Shame there’s the whiff of the Griff about thon Gylfi Sigurdsson who, on form, was a right special player for the Toffees.

  15. For all you cowpokes out there, I watched a good cowboy film yesterday, called Open Range. It stars Kevin Costner and Robert Duval, plus a rather fetching Annette Bening. Well worth a watch, on channel 5 and probably still available on catch up.

Thanks for the update on this FRANKTERRY – been following this. The lady’s life has been made a nightmare by that odious creep, Banks. Will look forward to reading the full judgement later.

Boris will be after the Judge now, no doubt.

There is a clear trail of breadcrumbs from Banks –> Boris –> Brexit

Hopefully this will provide other investigative journalists – and some do exist outwith the Mail/Express/Telegraph/Sun/Record cabal – to get the details out there.

A good victory for journalism, but also must be an incredible weight off of the shoulders of a brave woman.

  19. Big Wavy – I was trying to recall the last homegrown centre forward who became a regular first pick for us. Can’t think of anyone in the last 3 or 4 decades.

I’m not including Tony Watt whose star faded quicker than it appeared in the night sky against Barca!

    Have I forgotten any?

    It’s a peculiar thing.

Also, centre backs. Stephen Welsh, McManus and, eh, that’s it in terms of anyone coming close to being main stays in the team (I’m now questioning if big Mick came through the ranks – I’ll google it)

We could also think about the dearth of Scottish strikers coming through anywhere in the last twenty years. When Kris Boyd is among the best of them then we really haven’t been able to add to the great list of Scottish born goalscorers from years gone by.

  20. If Gio keeps scoring then Ange will keep picking him. Kyogo has to stay fit and keep scoring to keep his place. Next season I expect both to get plenty of minutes

Settled down last night to watch Soccer Aid. As usual it’s Come On You Rest Of The World against them.

At half time the teams had to bring in a “celebrity” goalkeeper probably hoping to increase the goal count. Rest of the world brought on Tom Stoltman(naw me neither) Big fat ugly boy from the word go. Thought to myself,he’s an identikit for a hun. Nearly fell about when the commentator said Tom is a big Old Firm fan. I then noticed he had 55 on his back. Was toying with supporting England now but realised he was just one hun in the team.

Big fanny saved two penalties in the shoot out.

New Zealand are 76 for 1 a lead of 90 in their second innings – need to set England at least 300 – match finishes tomorrow so still time for a team to win.
