Giakoumakis and the supporting cast

185

Giorgos Giakoumakis spectacular header to give Greece a late lead against Kosovo last night showed to an international audience what we have seen since his return from injury earlier this year.  Giorgos is a talent and his acquisition from VVV Venlo for around £2.5m was spectacularly good business.

His solitary year in the Netherlands saw him finish top goal scorer in a season VVV were relegated.  Celtic picked him up so cheaply as his career stalled after signing for AEK in 2017.  He scored only once for the Athens club and saw two loan moves fail to spark his career.

At 27, Giorgos is not going to attract a lucrative offer from England.  He is a player we should be able to rely on for the foreseeable future.  When Kyogo is fit, Giorgos will struggle to make the starting line-up, but having a supporting cast of players with a point to prove is a big part of winning.

Oor Josip did awfy well at LB v France. Defended brilliantly and got forward at every opportunity, putting some great balls into the box that could have been goal assists had the forwards’ finishing been better.

We have some player there. I also think Ralston will continue his remarkable progress next season at RB.

Three World Cups in a row for Australia…

It’s 5 actually. And great news for football down-under. Ange will love it and I’m with Ange.

Ballsy decision by Graham Arnold to sub yer goalie just for penalties.

And bravo to Bruce Grobbelaar-imitator Andrew Redmayne for the winning save.

  3. Good morning cqn from a lovely (not very sunny) Garngad but dry and mild.

St Tams – Sorry to hear that about you mother in law and having to cancel your holiday, I hope everything goes ok with her.

We still have not had our electronic boarding passes/tickets and my daughter is trying to get a hold of TUI but it’s a nightmare.

Forgetting the personal holiday, I honestly think for the first time (for real) that the UK is fecked, train drivers/staff on strike, no bus drivers, everything going up in price, gas, electricity, fuel, no hospitality workers, no travel industry workers, cannot get staff for jobs that pay Glasgow living or minimum wage. Any pay rise is like pay deficit with cost of living rises. All the while fat cat barstewards get richer on the backs of hard working employees and pay less tax than a busker in Argyle street.

This is the worst I have seen it in my adult life and its it’s going to get even worse soon.

    Both SHOCKING and DISGUSTING

    Have a nice day yall

I remember 15% inflation, 12% mortgage rate and 3 million unemployed, miner strikes – dead not being buried, rubbish not collected train strikes etc

I was 1 day away from being jobless – would probably have lost my house.

We’ve been here before. I know what families are going through – it’s going to be tough.

Five in a row for Australia! Incredible record. Now I know they have a different route to the World Cup, now via the Asia qualifiers, but getting through two knock out games this time was not a given. And to achieve it without Lyndon Dykes all the more incredible.

I thought your final line was unnecessarily rough on a decent poster who had made a reasonable comment.

I always thought your posts were perfectly fair and it is always interesting ( for me) to read an overseas viewpoint. Lately, though, I have felt there has been more anger in your posts. You are not becoming a grumpy old man, are you? :-))

Is a draw your prediction in the Test Match? I see nothing different but without Sky etc, I am judging that on the little I have seen and the current state of play.

  7. Been away for a week so very glad to see that Cameron Carter-Vickers has signed. Very important. Maybe even essential. I would dearly like Jota as well but I feel CCV was the big one.

  8. …..and finally, after a week of golf in the beautiful Le Touquet area, I am off to see if I can still go a bike.

    Cheerio for now.

England still have a chance of winning – if New Zealand bat till lunch then a draw is favourite

    But what do I know

Aye CELTICMAC; for a footballing minnow nation with no mark coaches and players, we Aussies do OK ;)

The other noticeable absence – Mrs Quad remarked to me – was Tommy Rogic.

Shame for him to miss out on the qually jubilations. Hope Tam is going good since leaving the bhoys.
