Giakoumakis , Juranovic and some old lies

273

Those of you who were not around in the 90s, when the Fergus McCann regime was in place, might be unfamiliar with the stories around Giorgos Giakoumakis and Josip Juranovic.  We are told by the ‘popular’ media that both players are disappointed that unwritten agreements to significantly improve their contracts have not been met.

Peddling this line was an industry back in Fergus’ day.  Players and agents were figuratively battering journalists’ doors down with the fine print in unwritten contracts.  We had no new media then, so all we could do is complain to each other, while a significant portion of the support took everything said about the board hook, line and sinker, backed the players and opposed Fergus.

Now, as then, these players have expensive agents and lawyers.  Nothing is agreed that is not in the contract.  Contracts can contain clauses with bonuses or uplifts based on appearances, goals, club success or pretty much any metric you can think of.  If it remains unwritten, it is not an agreement.

As far as Josip (27) and Giorgos (28 next week), honestly, you don’t even need to ask.  Those of us who have ambitions to kick on, move beyond our European cannon fodder status, will want to Asset Manage both of them.  The recruitment operation that brought them to the club in 2021 has only grown in resource; throw the dice without a moment’s hesitation.  Greatness was never achieved by being conservative.

For Giakomakis see Juranovic and recall weeks ago when Ange hinted that players would be bought and sold. Both these players have done well and Celtic have offered improved terms accordingly.

In the case of GG who is under contract until 2026 then surely we’re asking him the question

very early ? Does a player under contract merit an upgrade so soon?

Unprecedentedl at Celtic we’ve clearly changed tactics and the conveyor belt of signings rolls on. As ever there has to be a buyer, looking for a new deal and refusing to resign means your in the revolving door, and Celtic will replace you.

Sell when stock value is at a premium not in the last years of expiring contracts, when it’s too late keep the squad fresh and replenished.

    Makes sense to me CSC

  2. For anyone lucky enough to hear Ange at the AGM, he spelled this out , without naming names.

    We now know the names

Any story about Celtic in The Ranker should be treated with the same level of scepticism and contempt as if it were coming from “rangers” news, which in effect it is.

  4. Peter Lawwell seems to have made his biggest mistake when he bought all of Celtics influence to bear in backing the “Modernisers” at the SFA agai

  5. ‘…a significant portion of the support took everything said about the board hook, line and sinker, backed the players and opposed Fergus.’

How about when a significant section of the support took everything said about the player hook, line and sinker, backed Mr Rodgers and opposed Moussa ?

PS: Any news on efforts to Asset Manage a certain Mr McCarthy, Paulo ?

  6. If a player wants a move ,for more money/another challenge, what is the best way to achieve it,WinWin Celtic

  7. More desperate stuff from the rags,G Mak is like a lot of strikers, they need to play to keep sharp, a start in every 2 or 3 games, means we aaren’t getting the best out of him,i think we should have worked out a formation by now,to have him and Kyogo starting together IMO

  8. Peter Lawwell seems to have made his biggest mistake when he bought all of Celtics influence to bear in backing the “Modernisers” at the SFA against the blazers of Petrie and co.

Maxwell is both incompetant and hostile to Celtic, he comes across very like the handshake faction he replaced. Souness farcical statement about VAR is echoed by Maxwell ad looks like a conspiracy to ensure that VAR continues in its MIB way with every decision against Celtic.

We need to persue this through UEFA courts and prepare information on the biased interpretation of VAR.

The World Cup has set a standard of Refereeing both on the park and in use of VAR which is not operating in Scotland

  9. Every player has a price so, yes, horse trading when at their peak is abso the way to go.

But for me, there are 2 players we simply couldn’t afford to let go from the current squad [without immediate impact on identity, play, results and vision Ange has for the club] and they are…

Stand by for more ‘turmoil’ at Celtic stories , all hands on deck Celtic are running away with the league again.

  11. At this stage of the season letting big Gio go without a ready made replacement would be a huge mistake, I can understand letting Juranovic go considering we are already in in the process of replacing him, but as we all know putting the ball in the net is thee most important thing in football, and big Gio is very good at that.

  12. Not surprised one way or another by this story. We all know JJ is off,his replacement already in.Nearly.Gio,no idea, but does anyone think he is the type of player to take us to the next level in the CL ?.Maybe Ange does not and is quite relaxed about this.On that subject,I am not convinced that the Canadian boy is either, but the best RB at the WC so far,Dest,is valued around a starting price of 20 million. So maybe we have done as well as possible, and improvement under Ange will work its magic.Anyway, knowing as we do how Ange works,we should all be relaxed.

My query is,how did a couple of posters get PL into this discussion. My advice, get some help.

  13. We need to risk replacing either GG or Kyogo at some point between now and when we next play in the Champions League or it’ll be more if the same as this season

If the opportunity arises to do it now we should take it

We really need to resist the urge to panic if we get beaten at Ibrox in the new year game

    What about Matt Hand-cock?

  15. Good afternoon from damp and chilly Springburn (work).

I will not believe one word the Scottish Main Stream media tells me.

If I were to believe and listen to the press then Beale has one every trophy in Scotland nae the world.

  16. “We are told by the ‘popular’ media that both players are disappointed that unwritten agreements to significantly improve their contracts have not been met.”

    Yes, unwritten clauses…

Interesting how Moussa Dembele forced a move on an unwritten agreement he had made with Brendan Rodgers while he was at Fulham

It is said that BR promised MD a big move if he did well at Celtic

He did okay then he and his agent aggressively forced the Manager’s hand.

We should bear this in mind when Moussa’s hero status is reviewed – I’ve never heard of an agent being so aggressive to a Manager than that of Dembele’s agent turning up a Lennoxtown telling Celtic how it works!!

    Hail Hail

  17. Chairbhoy you are of course correct.

Players in General hold all the aces nowadays, down tools, cause a dressing room rift etc.

    Disgusting behaviour.

    D :)

  18. Sell them both, make a profit.

Reinvest in Johnston and Cho, who are both younger and by the look if it, better for our system.

    Improve the team.

Win more matches and leagues. Qualify for ECL.

    Rinse and repeat.

    Hope all’s good.

    Yes, it was disgusting behaviour

In the nineties… Players and agents were figuratively battering journalists’ doors

Now agents physically rattling the gates of Lennoxtown…

Thought Dest was outstanding the other night, as we’re several of the US players, especially the midfield. I’ve not let myself be upset about anyone leaving, since Kenny went all those years ago. I like JJ but don’t think he’s as good as some of the support do. The Canadian boy looked good, though not flawless, in the games I’ve seen him in. I think he’ll be a good buy and comes across as an affable type. He’s a bit bigger also and hopefully is decent in the air. Love GG but again if he goes, fair enough and let’s get someone better in.

Last night’s penalty was was an absolute joke. The drama of the games being played at the same time was brilliant but I felt very sorry for Mexico (Poland were dismal). From what I’ve seen there are plenty of good players around, outwith the big Countries.

  21. Chairbhoy – I am well hope you are to.

    I remember it well.

We have just witnessed Ronaldo spit the dummy out at Manure. Same scenario, slightly different tactics.

By the way I am not saying Giaka or Jura are guilty of this I don’t know to much about these to cases yet.

Moussa scored goals against the best teams in Europe, he did better than okay.

  23. DAVID66 @ 1:26 PM,

It seems to me that Giaka and Jura will be treated fairly – a bit more more and an extended contract or a move to a better Club than whenced they came with invaluable medals and experience.

From what we see so far, it’s the “normal” strategies…

  24. Popular media 😂😂 Do any of our support actually read the likes of the record and the sun?! It’s hilarious seeing some of the online headlines from obscure sources that end with “Ange will be raging” 😂

  25. CELTIC40ME @ 1:35 PM,

Yes, absolutely – he also did great in domestic football when he felt like playing….

It still doesn’t absolve the actions mentioned

    Hail Hail

  26. 2 seasons of someone of Moussa’s ability then a £20m profit

I think we did okay out of the deal.

Nobody would turn down a similar arrangement right now.

I guess we could complain about lack of loyalty or integrity but it would make us a bit hypocritical if we were to then talk about aggressive assett management.

    Priorities and ambition I guess
