“Giant punishments” on Rangers were illusory, you were punished instead

1014

Malcolm Murray, the newly appointed chairman of the Newco club Charles Green hopes to establish, yesterday entertained us with his comments on punishments served on a football team suspected of cheating you for over a decade.  He said:

“We’ve had giant punishments already – a European ban, a 10-point deduction, the emotional trauma everyone has suffered. I think, for the good of Scottish football, it’s much better Rangers in the SPL.”

There has been no European ban.  Newco will not be eligible for European competition because it is a Newco and Uefa requires three years accounts from participating clubs.  They are simply not eligible, they have not and will not achieve the qualification criteria for European football for three years.

The 10-point penalty imposed on Rangers last season for seeking protection from creditors by going into administration is hardly a “giant” punishment.  It changed nothing.  Rangers were second in the league when it was imposed and remained so.  They released no players and went on to defeat Motherwell twice, ensuring they finished the league in second place, earning £900k in additional prize money.

As a punishment, it is the equivalent of banning Ally McCoist from this year’s 100m Olympic competition.  Pointless.

Which leaves us with “the emotional trauma everyone has suffered”.  Compared to the emotional trauma suffered by Dundee, Motherwell, Gretna, Third Lanark fans, recent events have been nothing more than a focus for some robust rallying calls.

Don’t even start me on the emotional cost of losing the league in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011, all to a team of cheats.  How do you measure that?  Think back to each day we lost those titles and tell me how you felt about them then and how you feel now, knowing you were cheated.

The questions you pose are right in every way. The deafening silence from the SFA/SPL on the liquidation of the former football club is precisely because they know they need to answer these questions or just apply the rules.

If they apply the rules as they stand then the ‘tribute’ newco which may have many of the trappings of a football team is not one because it is not registered with any footballing authority. They know that under the existing rules it has as much football status in Scottish Football as our local 5 a side team which plays at the local playing facility. Its lack of accounts means that at present it should have as much chance of being registered with the SFA/SPL as that 5 a side team. The only difference I can see between them is that the ‘tribute team’ has more players (accepting disputes about their status and TUPE) and a bigger playing facilities assuming they actually ‘own’ Ibrokes/MP.

On the other hand the ‘shell’ of the former football club exists only as an entity that remains registered at Companies House RFC(ILl). This amounts in real terms to no more than a bank account. As such it probably meets even less of the criteria of the tribute company.

The deafening silence is because if they recognise the beast is dead. However they know that if they take any action not covered in the existing rules in connection with the dead parrot/tribute team they would be ‘ultra vires’ and open to legal challenge.

The fixtures are out for next season soon and I am led to believe they contain team X which reflects the fact the RFC(IL) cannot meet its fixtures.

Hoping Green is as thick skinned and as stubborn a Yorkshireman as he sounds and we have a nice ‘war’ between them and the ‘cardigan consortium’ over the next few weeks. What is the chance of two tribute teams soon?

This remains a gift still giving..

  2. “If the vote was tomorrow Rangers would not be in the SPL next season

and I believe up to eight clubs would vote against them,” one SPL

chairman told Scotland on Sunday on condition of anonymity. “That

figure could certainly change the more the scaremongering carries on in

the lead-up to a vote. However, I have never known an issue to unify so

many fans and so many clubs. Those of us running clubs have to

remember we are the custodians of Scottish football and integrity must

come first. We can’t go for short-term fixes that put TV deals before the

fans. Any decision that underestimates the strength of feeling among

supporters could cause a massive long-term problem for the game. And I

don’t think many chairman are about to underestimate the importance

of being as one with their fans.”

Sunday, June 17, 2012 at 07:41 AM #27 BigGinUAE The trouble with all of that is that we just CAN’T get around some of the FACTS (those inconvenient truths) in this whole sad matter. The simple fact is that RFC (rip) were clearly guilty of a huge array of offences from willful avoidance of tax to the state, and what increasingly look like “illegal “parallel” contracts, failure to submit acc’ts etc etc…the list is a long one. In addition, as the aggrieved parties in all of this, other SPL clubs have been openly threatened with sanctions and boycotts (clearly supported by RFC and headed up by a well-known former player). Whatever else, the other SPL clubs DID NOT cause rangers demise, in spite of a voting system leaning heavily in the favour of the OF. In addition, we see on a daily basis many Rangers fans telling us in all manner of outlets that we in fact are the one’s who are at Armageddon’s door, with a “we can’t survive without them” stance with varying degrees of bullishness and arrogance. Bottom line however is that, like a whole swaithe of Scottish fans I LOVE my football, but I DON’T love it enough that I’d be willing to overlook these Rangers offences, nor would I be prepared to continue to support MY club were it to show such invisible backbone and lack of any sense of fair play and integrity that would allow them to even CONSIDER voting other than to see any “newco” in the leagues at anything above the third division…which frankly i see as a truly miniscule sentence in the circumstances. We then get to “what will SPL chairmen do??”. Well, that’s a matter for them of course, and they will surely do what THEY think is best for THEIR clubs,,,,,,but it is encumbent on EVERY SPL fan outside the defunct RFC to lobby HIS club and make HIS views known, as I have already done…and frankly I simply will NEVER return to the club I LOVE if they surrender any pretence to integrity. We ALL have to come through hard economic times on occasions, but it’s a very moot point indeed whether any SPL chairman will consider that, in order to have ONE Rangers fan attend his home match, he might (and often WILL) lose a number of his OWN core fans who attend EVERY game…and that’s why the simple “we’ll lose the money from Rangers fans” simply isn’t credible. What IS the point of pandering to a Rangers fan group who visit once (at best twice) a year??? …which incidentally (I’ve looked at the figures) means that a home visit by Rangers means an increase in the average gate of some 2,000 additional (presumably Rangers) fans , and while it’s true that the club would not WISH to lose that revenue, it’s hardly terminal, as the Ibrox spin would have it. Finally, even Rangers fans must query the system whereby the “accused”is allowed to effectively sit in the jury room with the jury as they deliberate a verdict, and are EVEN ALLOWED A VOTE ON THAT VERDICT. The whole CONCEPT of such a system is more redolent of the ideas of democracy in the old Soviet bloc or in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe rather than in the modern, progressive democrac that we all hope to be. Time for Rangers fans to cast off the denial…the Armageddon is HERE…they need to face the TRUTH in all it’s painful …and shameful…aspects and it is only through such conversion that there is ANY CHANCE WHATEVER that their rehabilitation can even begin.

    Question:

There are, as it stands, only 11 teams in the SPL following the death of Rangers. So how come NewRangers get a vote on whether they can enter the SPL?

Surely they have the same voting rights as Alloa or Dunfermline even?

Seems odd to me that a heavily conflicted club could, in theory, have a casting vote on whether they enter the SPL (if the vote hangs at 7-4 pending their vote)…

Morning all me and the rest of the family taking faither down to Celtic Park for a bit of dinner later, eating at Celtic Park after Rangers died it has a good feel about it. I am on my hols from this Tuesday I am soooooo glad they died before I went abroad as continually signing-on to CQN on holiday may have resulted in severe moaning from my better half.

Have got 10.30 mass first and then a read of the on-line Sunday papers so see what is happening in the world, then go back to the new media to find out what is really happening.

  26. Morning from the balmy Chilterns.

Yerterday afternoon I listened to Sportsound on the wireless.

The level of anaylisis and debate was superb (didn’t agree with it all of course), although a phone call interrupted my listening (Euros when I turned the sound back up) my feeling was there is a huge reality check in Scottish Football – lets hope it’s not too little, too late.

The SoS – A Smith, Article is another example of a realistic analysis (didn’t agree with it all of course) and presentation of the current situation.

But what it highlighted for me once again was the ridiculous Broadcasting deals that Scottish Clubs enter into.

I posted on this long ago and a few times since, if SKY, ESPN, BBC, Setanta etc. etc. etc. can’t give us a decent deal we should be looking at alternatives.

Comparing the Scottish & English Broadcasting deals is fraught but consider this.

Scottish population is about 10M in the UK, what percentage of that diaspora sign up to SKY Sports, what percentage of SPL vs EPL do they watch?

My contention is Scots as a whole (and attendance figures back this up) support Football in greater numbers per capita and these Scots subsidise there English cousins Football viewing and Clubs revenue.

    EPL circa 2,000M

    SPL circa 20M

Are they correct in assuming for every Scots fan there is 100 English, ok I get there are other factors at play but even so, it would take a heck of a lot to convince me the Scottish Football Fan isn’t subsidising the EPL supporter and his club.

Also factor in the disruption to attendances of screened TV matches, firstly they are on TV so you can catch the game without going to the match, secondly these fixtures have inconvenient K.O. times, so lower attendance.

Now then, the BBC, how many Scots pay their licence fee? We have little or no Scottish Football in England (apart from a little news and cameos on Football Focus). Yet on BBC Scotland you get more English Football than Scottish, MOTD, The Championship League, very little Sports Scene.

BBC Alba is quickly becoming the best channel for Scottish Football. The BBC should be representing Scottish Football properly on Scotlnd One & Two and paying for the privilige.

We are not 1% of the UK’s population (we also need to factor in the Irish that watch the SPL), we certainly are not 1% in terms of numbers or passion when it comes to Football and we shouldn’t be treated like it.

When it comes to Broadcasting rights there is huge potential and multi-platforms, forelock tugging should cease, when we shake up the SPL, we should be shaking up the Broadcasters also.

  27. Jim McColl involved with the Newclub. So it’s nothing more than a “wee cuttin'” from the Deadclub. Don’t think it’ll grow.
