“Giant punishments” on Rangers were illusory, you were punished instead

1014

Malcolm Murray, the newly appointed chairman of the Newco club Charles Green hopes to establish, yesterday entertained us with his comments on punishments served on a football team suspected of cheating you for over a decade.  He said:

“We’ve had giant punishments already – a European ban, a 10-point deduction, the emotional trauma everyone has suffered. I think, for the good of Scottish football, it’s much better Rangers in the SPL.”

There has been no European ban.  Newco will not be eligible for European competition because it is a Newco and Uefa requires three years accounts from participating clubs.  They are simply not eligible, they have not and will not achieve the qualification criteria for European football for three years.

The 10-point penalty imposed on Rangers last season for seeking protection from creditors by going into administration is hardly a “giant” punishment.  It changed nothing.  Rangers were second in the league when it was imposed and remained so.  They released no players and went on to defeat Motherwell twice, ensuring they finished the league in second place, earning £900k in additional prize money.

As a punishment, it is the equivalent of banning Ally McCoist from this year’s 100m Olympic competition.  Pointless.

Which leaves us with “the emotional trauma everyone has suffered”.  Compared to the emotional trauma suffered by Dundee, Motherwell, Gretna, Third Lanark fans, recent events have been nothing more than a focus for some robust rallying calls.

Don’t even start me on the emotional cost of losing the league in 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011, all to a team of cheats.  How do you measure that?  Think back to each day we lost those titles and tell me how you felt about them then and how you feel now, knowing you were cheated.

Problem is sevco is not a member of the SFA so not entitled to hold, transfer or offer SFA player registrations. This is not a restriction on trade since sevco are not precluded from employing anyone or of playing football with their players. They cannot though participate in SFA controlled activity, it being a ‘club’ an’all.

Fathers Day. a day which of emotions for fellow dads out there.

It’s also a day when we think of our departed Dads, and for many of us this one will be more poignant than most. If only they were here to see recent events. This has special resonance for me, as mine was a full fat HUN. How I wish he had seen all this.

-The quokka /ˈkwɒkə/ (Setonix brachyurus), the only member of the genus Setonix, is a small macropod about the size of a domestic cat. Like other marsupials in the macropod family (such as the kangaroos and wallabies), the quokka is herbivorous and mainly nocturnal. It can be found on some smaller islands off the coast of Western Australia, in particular on Rottnest Island just off Perth and Bald Island near Albany. A small mainland colony exists in the protected area of Two Peoples Bay, where they co-exist with Gilbert’s potoroo.

  7. Got a pm on Fbook yesterday from an old school friend who is a producer at the beeb. He asked me for my email address so that he could send me a photo slagging sevco FC. He said that they are all really really hurting badly, leekie and co. He asked me to post it on FB and tag him, that way they would all see it and he would be blameless.

Rottnest Island or Rotto as the locals call it, is a short ferry ride from Fremantle. It is polluted with quokkas, who come up to the tourists to be fed, although this is forbidden by the authorities.

I was not aware that quokkas lived anywhere else apart from zoos.

  15. Re Sevco/Newco , I`ve lost track to be honest. Surely we are all just surmisng, as not a lot has changed and the cash has not yet changed hands to buy the corpse. That said it will not stop me getiing on the guessing bus, I would like to know a couple of things.

If Green hands over money this week, does he pay the wages due for payment in June?

Does that then mean he owns the registrations and can sell as he sees fit ?

Can the man with no surnames gang put a stop to this by stumping up cash to the liquidators?

Will that then lead to a hun v hun court case ? Hope so.

If Sevco becomes a member of the SPL then it becomes a member of the SFA.

The recent changes to SPL articles give leeway to a prospective member to have time to meet the test of actually operating a football club. It is, in theory, possible that Sevoc could be admitted to the SPL on the basis that if it does it will then register the footballers it employs with the SFA.

Of course if there is a new league structure merging the SPL and the SFL its rules have still to be written. And we know that they will be written to suit!

  20. Alasdair MacLean on

    OK, I’ll try and start:

“So who does own the club?”

    What club?

You mean, “Who owns the a stadium, car park and sports centre that used to belong to Rangers Football Club? (Now in liquidation.)”

    OK, let’s go from there…………….

  23. Gallagher &@ 12.57 yesterday.

You show exactly the obsessoin that I referred to.

Whatever Mrs Thatcher changed or didn’t change, she’s been out of office for over 21 years, i.e. her period IN POWER is long over. She was elected to change things – the preceding Labour administration was exhausted & bankrupt of ideas. As soon as she left office, her Tory colleagues started trimming her ideas, notably the Community Charge. The fact that some other ideas from her time have endured may be atributable to their strength. Perhaps you can explain your obsession with “Reaganomics” & Milton Friedman’s theories: neither Major, Blair, Brown nor Cameron has been remotely interested in following them.

“The system”, whatever it is, has not brought us to the present crisis: on the contrary, it is the result of simple policy errors, viz. lending by the banks to borowrs who weren’t credit-worthy, excessive government spending & the creation of the Eurozone. Of course, it’s easier to balme “the system” (especially if one doesn’t like it) than to analyse the problem.

Agreed, but as it stands today, 17 June, sevco is not a valid body to hold, transfer or propose registrations. SPL membership is achievable but that does not confer player registration rights in itself. Only SFA membership does that.

Does SPL membership ‘confer’ automatic SFA membership? That’s not my understanding?
