Gibraltar echoes a caution for Belfast

235

I was cautioned yesterday on my assumption that Linfield would be fodder for the Celtic machine next month. The words, “You mean they’re no Lincoln Red Imps?” was the retort. Red Imps occupy a minor detail in the story of last season; a curiosity at the beginning of the Brendan Rodgers regime, bound to become a quiz question of the future.

Linfield will reach the second qualifying round of the Champions League and will be despatched by Celtic, but the jeopardy of a reversal in Belfast is a real possibility. While none of us begrudge Red Imps their moment of glory, the prospect of waiting a week to put right an indifferent early season performance would cause consternation.

Be ready for it, Celtic. Your opponents will be.

Josh ‘s grandpa if you are lurking.

He’s tweeted/ video, good footage of Celtic v Barcalona, pre match you’ll never walk alone.

His message: still definitely the best video I’ve ever took.

He might be a Brighton player now but I think I know where is heart is.

I wish him all the best in his career.

I think Brendan and the international players are back tomorrow. Rogic is in Russia and Gamboa is with Costa Rica I think. All others will be on the pre season trip on Monday. Would expect to see some business done in the next fortnight.

They seem to be able to extricate themselves from deals and contracts that they no longer want to honour, next up will be the Nottingham three, watch out for another deal being in their favour from this, i am baffled how they manage this, anyone else pays in full or is bound by the terms agreed.

Then if there is two sides to a story why do we not hear from the other side, Sports Direct are a huge company with a massive turnover, they can well afford PR and favourable coverage, what we are getting is King boasting that he has been able to get this deal renegotiated to their benefit, not a cheap from SD, Phil might be along with more details but again this looks like a victory for King because the other side do not state their case.

Why would Mash waste his time and money, seriously, outwith scotland nobody gives a flying duck about sevco and their dealings, nobody, Mash will still be raking it in from them, more so imo after the deal was done, the huns will now buy stuff and Mash will make more money, that;s the bottom line, maybes the huns will get a few bob extra, but it will be nothing like they are bleating about.

Very interesting etymology behind the word Tory

I was talking about the reputation rather than the reality.

    :-)

Hovever, maybe most of us are Tories…………………

    :-)

The Tory political faction originally emerged within the Parliament of England to uphold the legitimist rights of James, Duke of York, to succeed his brother Charles II to the thrones of the three kingdoms. James became a Roman Catholic at a time when the state institutions were fiercely independent from the Church of Rome—this was an issue for the Exclusion Crisis supporting Patricians, the political heirs to the nonconformist Roundheads and Covenanters.

  19. What is the Stars on

    Green Man

Starts as a word for Irish highwayman/robber ( dispossesed irish take to the hills and woods and live by ambush and robbery)

Extended to describe other robbers especially Scottish Highlands and then morphs from that into a term of abuse for supporters of Catholic King James the second

    From wiki

Towards the end of Charles II’s reign (1660–85) there was some debate about whether or not his brother, James, Duke of York, should be allowed to succeed to the throne. “Whigs”, originally a reference to Scottish cattle-drivers (stereotypically radical anti-Catholic Covenanters), was the abusive term directed at those who wanted to exclude James on the grounds that he was a Roman Catholic. Those who were not prepared to exclude James were labelled “Abhorrers” and later “Tories”. Titus Oates applied the term “Tory”, which then signified an Irish robber, to those who would not believe in his Popish Plot, and the name gradually became extended to all who were supposed to have sympathy with the Catholic Duke of York.[7]

The suffix -ism was quickly added to both “Whig” and “Tory” to make Whiggism and Toryism, meaning the principles and methods of each faction.

This is all true, and more.

I always stress the importance of Burke, whose influence can be seen in every Theresa May speech, ‘The National Interest’, a device Burke would use to bolster his waffling, which was considerable indeed. Burke’s ‘Speech to the Electors of Bristol’ shows the root of Tory rhetoric.

Id recommend reading that speech( get it online). In its own warped way, its very good indeed in terms of political discourse, funny as well:)
