Gilmour and clubs of the heart

323

Stewart Gilmour was angry a year ago when Scottish Football League clubs offered Newco Rangers a place in the Third Division, rejecting a proposal to parachute them into the First Division, saying “This is horrific news for St Mirren Football Club. The consequences are terrible, catastrophic even.

“The St Mirren board will meet in the days after that SPL meeting and decide what is the best way forward but we are already looking at major redundancies [no they weren’t].

“Unfortunately, the people in the SFL have not bought into that [proposal to put Newco in the First Division]. I just hope they realise the damage they have done to Scottish football.”

I. Just. Hope. They. Realise. What. Damage. They. Have. Done. To. Scottish. Football.

Few could understand his anger at the time.  Gilmour voted against parachuting Newco into the SPL, perhaps left with little choice by their fans and his fellow directors, so it was bizarre he felt comfortable criticising others for doing exactly what he did.

Nothing has changed.  Gilmour wanted Newco in the second tier of Scottish football a year ago and he wants exactly the same now.  This is the Great Blue Hope.

Newco prophesised the failure of Scottish football without them at the head.  Now, with Gilmour’s assistance, their projections look less foolish.

I make no personal judgement on Gilmour.  If I was an SPL club chairman and Celtic needed me to vote one way to enable their financial survival, I would do it without question.  We are football people and this is how we are wired.  The club of the heart comes first.

It’s too late to salvage Newco.  Invitations to a newly formed second tier are a fantasy, but you can set your watch on a forthcoming media campaign backing the idea.  We shall not be moved.

If you don’t get a regular piece in the mag from Declan, you’re missing a trick :-)

I think it will be very interesting in the weeks to come if Craig Whyte has taped all his conversations. There will be lots of people sweating about it at the moment I am sure. H.H.

  3. If Celtic were prepared to allow £1m to filter down under the reorganisation proposals, they should try to find a way to share this money within the SPL (excluding a certain 2 clubs, of course)

Hun websites salivating over the imminent collapse of the SPL.

    stupid, stupid huns

El Maestro has certainly generated some heated exchanges. Fair Play to him.

    I welcome him aboard.

Where he finds these ‘Celtic men’ who want our cheating neighbours back at Celtic Park, I have no idea.

I have heard such mythical creatures on radio talk-ins.

I have read about them in our tawdry ‘rags’.

I have still to actually meet even ONE of them in the flesh.

I HATED Old Firm games & regularly gave away my season-book for the hatefest.

This season has been a pleasure without them.

Most days of my life, I spend an hour in one hostelry or another. I meet an awful lot of Celtic men in the course of a year. I have still, throughout the last year, to meet one single Tim who wants to EVER see the resurrection of our deceased former rivals.

If El Maestro would like to tell me about a pub anywhere in Glasgow where I could meet some example of these rare & shy creatures, I will make a point of going there to witness it for myself.

  6. Gilmour told the Daily Record: “Let all of them blast their shotguns.

“I’m still firmly of the belief, with all my heart and not letting it rule my head, that what I did at Hampden was the right thing to do.

“I still want to see elements of the reconstruction proposals – like a single league body – implemented. But not at any cost.”

He said he would explain to St Mirren fans why he had voted against the proposals in due course.

At any cost? What is the nugget on about? He sounds more like Green every day.

I agree would be nice. However, I think Watt needs to be grounded a bit first. Would like to see a menace of a CB come in. Don’t care if he is good with his feet just a tower block of a human. Hooper replaceable IMO, Vic not so much. I would like to see money from Vic reinvested

I find this whole scenario amazing – almost unbelievable – surely Gilmour is going to look incredibly inept if and when Sevco go bust (or Green gets his walking ticket).

Is there a Sevco/St Mirren Plan “C” – amalgamation perhaps? – or is it Sevco in SPL2 or nothing?

Incidentally, I thought that Chuckles pledged that Sevco would never play in the SPL again – does SPL2 not count – or is the second tier the limit of his ambitions?

  11. See if oor Hero was made a director of the ol’ Sevco 5088, aye, the company who bought the assets and all that crud from the club who were formerly in existence, would that pass the Phoenixing test for tax deposit purposes?

    Just asking like.

We need a solid CB, Ambrose if he stays should be played right back. He is NEVER a CB.

Amongst the many pressing matters of the day, the fine fholks who run our club have taken the time to make arrangements that enable my son to attend the Championship winning game on Sunday.

And what spectacular arrangements they are.

    Gobsmacked. Both of us.

Thanks to all at the club.

  17. Ernie Lynch @ 12:56,

If PL’s nose is out of joint I would think it was down to the fact he has attended many a meeting negotiated hard and tried to find a solution which was best for Celtic and Scottish Football over several years.

Eventually there was a consensus, not what Celtic wanted exactly but a way forward none the less.

It must be frustrating for all those involved to see it sabotaged at the last moment.

Still it means that opinions have hardened within the SPL Boards and maybe they’ll ge on and make the best of it.

It’s certainly what I took from DU’s statement.

Nice to see Decln back, this forum does lack some commonal garden sensefrom time to time.

Son of Dan. How many right backs do we need we have Matthews and Lustig who are both quality ? I think the only place for Ambrose would be in midfield maybe as big Victors replacement but not Centre Back as he makes to many mistakes. H.H.
