Gilmour and clubs of the heart

323

Stewart Gilmour was angry a year ago when Scottish Football League clubs offered Newco Rangers a place in the Third Division, rejecting a proposal to parachute them into the First Division, saying “This is horrific news for St Mirren Football Club. The consequences are terrible, catastrophic even.

“The St Mirren board will meet in the days after that SPL meeting and decide what is the best way forward but we are already looking at major redundancies [no they weren’t].

“Unfortunately, the people in the SFL have not bought into that [proposal to put Newco in the First Division]. I just hope they realise the damage they have done to Scottish football.”

I. Just. Hope. They. Realise. What. Damage. They. Have. Done. To. Scottish. Football.

Few could understand his anger at the time.  Gilmour voted against parachuting Newco into the SPL, perhaps left with little choice by their fans and his fellow directors, so it was bizarre he felt comfortable criticising others for doing exactly what he did.

Nothing has changed.  Gilmour wanted Newco in the second tier of Scottish football a year ago and he wants exactly the same now.  This is the Great Blue Hope.

Newco prophesised the failure of Scottish football without them at the head.  Now, with Gilmour’s assistance, their projections look less foolish.

I make no personal judgement on Gilmour.  If I was an SPL club chairman and Celtic needed me to vote one way to enable their financial survival, I would do it without question.  We are football people and this is how we are wired.  The club of the heart comes first.

It’s too late to salvage Newco.  Invitations to a newly formed second tier are a fantasy, but you can set your watch on a forthcoming media campaign backing the idea.  We shall not be moved.

  3. if all these so called celtic fans who phone in clyde and the likes

saying they miss them so much in the spl maybe they should get

their season books at ipox next season then they could watch them

    every fortnight.

that is if they are still in existance

there are plenty of fans who give their seats away ,rather than go to

    games against them

    cliftonville celt,

Do you have any idea when tickets are available for the Irish Cup Final?

    I can’t see anything on Cliftonville’s website.

  5. Have to say I do not like “just blooter it” centre halfs and Efe isnae one of them. However need a balance and he wants to dribble with it too often and opposing forwards are wise to it.

Have to say I thought young Soutar’s back heel when under pressure was pure class for a 16 year old (and in a very dangerous area). Gault was also very impressive for the Arabs. Jackie Mac has the makings of a fine team for next season. Would love them to come second (as long as it is confratably distant second). MacKay-Steven proved he can play on the big occassion which up until now he had failed to do against us.

  6. Maybe gilmour knows sevco are about to go pop, and is just ingratiating himself with the hordes as they’ll be looking for another team to follow shortly. A team with St in the name too!

Wouldn’t it be beyond hilarious if were to survive (which I doubt very much), enter SFL2 and NOT gain promotion to SPL2 next …….. I would be inconsolable……would end up in hospital, since I would be unable to keep a straight face in front of any bhun…….I would also need a mortgage for sedatives…..Hahahahahaha

If I can interject…. I like Efe… at present, he scares me as a centre back, but, at least, he isn’t afraid of the ball …. given that SB is out, VW and BK will be suspended for the xcup final, I might give Efe a run in centre mid beside JL …. it might be our best pairing for the cup final.

I am a bit worried your confused with a simple answer, again i will try to simplify just for you, with or without Rangers i will follow Celtic (season book), and i watch games on the TV due to the fact i rarely get to away games now and IF Rangers were back in the league i would watch even more( hoping to see them beat!!) for the record i havent watch a single minute of non Celtic SPL football this season due to my lack of interest and standard of football on show!! I could easily head over to my public parks and watch players unable to pass the ball 5 yards!!

While we did suffer through the rebuilding programme under Fergus, you got a few facts wrong.

Andrews, , Slater & Rogan never played for us under Fergus, in fact all were long gone befire he arrived. Gillespie was gone a matter of months after Fergus arrived and Whittle & Holt never played a competative 1st team game for us(and I can’t recall them getting a game in a friendly either).

Butcher left the huns 4 years before Fergus arrived.

IMO the 1st and 5th season under Fergus were iffy, but the 3 in between where pretty damn good and we’d have won a lot more if we were not cheated by some of the the staff of the SFA

Do you honestly think the referee was good at the week end ???

You must have been watching a different game to me, and most of the posters on here.

Dundee Utd tried to play football, had they chosen to kick us off the park, they would have been afforded that, just like every other team are.

I was astonished Utd didn’t get a penalty when Vic took yer man out, but one mistake doesn’t make a good refereeing display.

  17. Reading some of the posts today regarding “a strong Sevco” i always think back to the nineties when we finished second to Oldco twice. Those second placed finishes were when they were winning their eighth and ninth league titles. At no point in that time do i remember anyone from the MSM saying it was bad for Scottish football that one club was dominating. If they make their way up the leagues fairly then fair enough. If they go bust again then fair enough. I wont miss them either way.

Is the reason you want to see Rangers back in the SPL just so as to see them get beat or do you want them in so as the league can be more competitive and by competitive, do you mean at the top end with Celtic and Rangers vying for honours.

  19. el maestro

Thanks for clearing up the ambiguity in your original post.

Now, trying to read between the lines of your reply, can I deduce that

    a) you attend all home games

    b) You watch a lot of Celtic away on the telly

    c) You don’t watch SPL games when Celtic are not playing

    d) You do watch Sevco in the 3rd div., because you specified SPL football that was not Celtic.

    e) You do miss them and believe we would be better with them back

    f) you do not mind being shafted (not on the playing field) by them so long as you get to play with them

    g) All of the above

  20. el maestro

Also, if you have not seen any non Celtic SPL games, how do you know what the standard of football is like in these games?

You are right. I failed to make clear that I was referring to all of our ‘crawling” period in the 90s not just the Fergus era. We had to suffer a poor playing squad while the old families had mishandled their stewardship and response to Murray and also during the Fergus era.

I do know when Anton and Gillespie played but I failed to make that clear in my timeline. And though Whittle and Holt did not play, their signing were a solid message to us and the Huns of where we were forced to operate in the transfer market as a result of poor financial management AND poor football decisions in the late 80s.

  23. Dundee Utd chairman getting a nice wee dig after yesterday’s meeting.

‘As a family who have injected £5.6 million into our club, and not an

it’s time for supporters throughout Scotland to ask questions.

  26. I don’t post often, mainly lurk and enjoy the very good posts on here.

I thought I would today as I wanted to say, I don’t miss Rangers, I wouldn’t mourn for them as I hated everthing they stood for, they are no longer there and so you can’t (even in the unlikely case you would) wish them back cause they are dead. The tribute act should not even be in the 3rd Divsion, and we all know why they are there, rules were bent to make that happen, that in it self should make us all hope Sevco wither away again and cease. The SPL has been good this year and when teams like D Utd play without fear, young players will prosper and make the league stronger going forward.

    Hail Hail

  27. Voguepunter it’s going to have to be a hellova big room going by the amount of Declan admirers on here this afternoon!

  28. Setting free the bears, I have a season book and attend when work dictates same goes with away games on tv, I have never seen the Huns kick a baw this season!!! now try to grasp what i am saying, as stated before I miss the buzz of old firm games and the race for the title, how good a feeling was 98 v st Johnstone or skelping them 6-2 eh? Am actually concerned about how small minded some people are when they don’t agree with you !! I am entitled to an opinion yes????
