Gilmour and clubs of the heart

323

Stewart Gilmour was angry a year ago when Scottish Football League clubs offered Newco Rangers a place in the Third Division, rejecting a proposal to parachute them into the First Division, saying “This is horrific news for St Mirren Football Club. The consequences are terrible, catastrophic even.

“The St Mirren board will meet in the days after that SPL meeting and decide what is the best way forward but we are already looking at major redundancies [no they weren’t].

“Unfortunately, the people in the SFL have not bought into that [proposal to put Newco in the First Division]. I just hope they realise the damage they have done to Scottish football.”

I. Just. Hope. They. Realise. What. Damage. They. Have. Done. To. Scottish. Football.

Few could understand his anger at the time.  Gilmour voted against parachuting Newco into the SPL, perhaps left with little choice by their fans and his fellow directors, so it was bizarre he felt comfortable criticising others for doing exactly what he did.

Nothing has changed.  Gilmour wanted Newco in the second tier of Scottish football a year ago and he wants exactly the same now.  This is the Great Blue Hope.

Newco prophesised the failure of Scottish football without them at the head.  Now, with Gilmour’s assistance, their projections look less foolish.

I make no personal judgement on Gilmour.  If I was an SPL club chairman and Celtic needed me to vote one way to enable their financial survival, I would do it without question.  We are football people and this is how we are wired.  The club of the heart comes first.

It’s too late to salvage Newco.  Invitations to a newly formed second tier are a fantasy, but you can set your watch on a forthcoming media campaign backing the idea.  We shall not be moved.

Chuckles could always claim that someone forged his signature and that he never appointed Whyte as a director.

Desperate perhaps, but that would depend on the alternative.

I read today that a guy in the States is sueing Gordon Ramsey and demanding a sample of his sweat so it can be compared to the sweat remains left on a legal document that Ramsay claims he never signed or even saw in fact.

  8. Just back from meetings in Paisley. The feeling of the St Mirren fans I talked to is pretty much behind Gilmore. They see the proposed structure as a mess and worse than what we have right now.

They seem to believe that Gilmore acted in the directors’ interests as it will apparently be easier to sell the club under the current set up. Not sure I can see the logic of this. But they don’t suspect any input from Green at all.

    Sell it to whom?

No-one in their right mind would buy a Scottish club.

How much have Vlad,Milne,Thomson, etc, lost keeping clubs afloat?

    Masterson? Moffat? Boyle?

    The list is endless.

The only club which is solvent in the long-term and able to play in the big time is Celtic, and possibly Hibs-though they seem to have run out of players to sell.

The rest of them exist as drains on the resources of their directors,or as cottage industries.

I fear for the future of the game up here-as do many of us-and genuinely believe that most of the clubs should be in a pyramid below two leagues of 10 or 12.

We can’t support 42 teams in a country of 5 million,we would struggle to justify half of that.

St Mirren telling everyone else that they have decided what is going to happen is a manifestation of the lunatics taking over the asylum.

    El Maestro,

I’ll say one thing for you. You’ve managed to generate an overwhelming consensus about the Sevco status, without P67 setting up a poll. If PL reads this site, which I think he does, then you’ve done us all a favour. Just in case he was even thinking of them coming back early as being to our benefit, he wont be going there now.

You say that you miss the vibe of beating them and we cant afford to live without them. Are you actually saying you want them back asap, despite bumping us for millions?

I have heard the odd young guy in the pub say this, but your the only one I’ve seen put it in writing.

  16. The @splofficial and @ScottishFA must regret ever appointing PL on board, it’s scary to think what that lot could do if he wasn’t in there.

It’s possible. Only they could have been seen to spend £49m they didn’t have and not to have gleaned a sporting advantage from it.

It stinks from top to bottom, it put me right off Scottish football and even coming on this site for a wee while. The disappointment of them, in my view getting away with years of cheating was just stunning. Then after a few days of thinking about it, I thought, no way am I going to let them win, and thank god I’m not 1 of them.
