Gilmour bitterness towards Lawwell evident

645

If you were in any doubt about what we’re up against when it comes to developing Scottish football, former St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour’s incoherent rant in one of today’s newspapers, that Peter Lawwell is running Scottish football, paints a clear picture for you.

Peter Lawwell’s club, your club, PAYS for Scottish football. Fans of this club pour millions into the bank accounts of others from Dingwall to Kilmarnock. Those same clubs earn TV money and trackside advertising to viewers who tune in to see that very same club play football.

Each SPFL and SFA member club has only one vote, and Peter Lawwell is out-voted and frustrated on many issues. What he brings to the table is experience of the game, business, commercial contracts, risk and strategy that no one else in our game has ever enjoyed.

He will be the person who brings evidence-based insight into the value of our game’s commercial properties. This is not because Peter Lawwell is some unassailable guru, he simply has experience of running a business which is greater in depth and scope than anyone else in the history of Scottish football. The fair-minded acknowledge this and are thankful for it.

If your skillset is more suited to a bowling club committee than a business turning over tens of millions of pounds, and you have an unfortunate attitude towards Celtic representatives, all this might rub you up the wrong way.

You may think the last person you want illuminating Scottish football is some educated ******. Believe me, these attitudes persist in our game.

Gilmour, you will remember, was in charge of St Mirren when Charles Green (then the darling of Ibrox), was invited to New St Mirren Park for a Celtic game. They all wanted a piece of Peter then, but there was no courtesy offered from the Celtic contingent on the day.

This is a call to arms by those who want to encourage clubs to obstruct Celtic in every way possible. Peter Lawwell is their bogeyman. They are still sore that they didn’t turnover Celtic (and the rest of Scottish football) in 2012, and they blame Peter for not getting what they wanted.

Now there is a fresh reality to worry about: Celtic making their own way in the world, with the consent of Scottish football. Others will find their place in the game, while one club would wither on the vine without Celtic to feed off.

Paul 67 care to expand on what you mean by this…….

  4. DESSYBHOY,

Personally,I have no wish to leave Scottish football. The bigots and morons can have no influence over us,we are much too far ahead of the pack.Nothing they can do can stop the Celtic juggernaut. The Monkeys will never recover enough to challenge us for decades,at least. We have it all.A free reign to land trophy after trophy, qualify for the CL,increase our massive financial muscle, and continue as we are.Sponsors will flock to a successful team increasing income further.

I will be delighted to see us lift every trophy for the foreseeable future, never get tired of it.Just sit back and enjoy the ride.

  5. The thought that Celticy stuff is disliked by a large swathe of Albanians (and probably some from outwith Alba) is a complete shock to my senses. As someone who has resided in this chuntry all my life it goes against the experiences i’ve had where fairness, equality, sportsmanship and bonhomie are not only evident but positively bloom.

I hope this nascent unpleasantness is transitory and we can return to the forbearing fraternity we and our ancestors had become accustomed to since arriving in Alba as immigrants.

Gilmour Stewart is obviously suffering from some kind of entrenched malady that brings out occasional bigoted blurts and should therefore be pitied not pilloried. And,of course, offered the psychological and human-decency assistance he requires.Hopefully by the time his treatment is complete he can return to the noble,tolerant,prejudice-free Alba we were all harmoniously enjoying until only recently.

Why complain about the media ?

As many point out, they are running with stories that appeals to their public .

The hue of that demographic has been a result of Celtic supporters action.

    No bad thing.

It’s weird though that their (even more) skewed nonsense is such a focus on CQN.

  7. Would be delighted to see Celtic renew interest in Nagbe.Broony,Armstrong,Eboue, and Nagbe, looks like a CL midfield to me.Dont know what the problem was,but obviously he still wants the move.

Anyway, its good to be able to talk about “Real transfers”,not 4 month loans.

Wee Paddy would be another great signing.Another year, and option to buy.He will only get better under Brendan.Still a wean, but loaded with talent.

  8. The recent outpourings by the hunnerati, both print and broadcast, reek of one thing:FEAR.

I rather enjoy it and long may it continue.

Yes see your point, any folk I talk to about it who are Celtic fans and go to games want out, the only problem is to where England Spain Germany seem to be the most favourable choices, dont know if Brexit may diminish the chances of this. It was a curious line from Paul about Celtic making its way in the world doesn’t sound to me from that it would be in Scotland, or maybe he is just tugging our chains or rubbing the noses of our foes in it.

  10. #Gilmour: “Are you trying to tell me that Peter’s [Lawwell] not pulling the strings [in the Scottish Game]?

I don’t mean any real criticism of Peter. Peter’s job is as the chief executive of Celtic, and in terms of that job he does a fantastic job. Does Peter do a great job for Scottish football?

How many times are we talking about new TV deals and various other things and trying to promote the game, and what comes out the box again? Us [Celtic] going to England.

Some of the chairmen that attend the meetings will not take Peter on. I think he’s got too much power on other clubs.”

Howdy, anyone know if any CSC buses will be passing through Belfast for the Dons game on the 1st and be willing to sell 2 seats (travel only) and what the rough cost would be? Only a query at this point… Cheers

Belfastbhoy, Letterkenny CSC used to run a bus to home games (passing thru Belfast I would imagine) but not sure if they still do.

They have a facebook page but as I don’t have a FB account I cannot access. I’m sure some of the more social media friendly guys on here will be able to have a look at their page or failing that some of the Donegal bhoys would be able to help.

  13. Great article Paul.

I said on here a few days ago. If it becomes clear that nothing and nobody, in a purely footballing sense, is going to stop Celtic winning 10-in-a-row, the SFA/SPFL will stop it by sanctioning and even promoting our exit from the Scottish game.

The sooner the better, as far as I am concerned.

  16. I always remember my old dad saying the Scottish football establishment were appalled when the Hoops won the big cup in 67.

They were so use to CFC being the less successful club.

I’m guessing that mentality has continued on for the last 2 generations. Assuming all things stay the

same, we will be dominant for many years to come.

  19. You can sense a real change in atmosphere in Scotland.

In the summer, it was one of celebration. “The Rangers” were “back” (sic). Back to the big-time for The People and back to business as usual for the media and the plethora of Sevco- friendly ex-players, administrators, and hangers on which has traditionally made up the Scottish Football commentariat.

August dawned and everyone prepared themselves to return to the old routine, many of them harbouring hopes that Sevco might even be able to snatch the league title at their first attempt, given their heroic draw at Hampden in April.

Now, oh how things have changed. Dark clouds abound. Brendan’s Celtic are streets ahead of Ronny’s team, and on a different level than any other team in the land. Sevco are broke, and the media are reduced to recycling ancient anniversary stories and bigging up short-term loan signings.

This is most definitely not “the good old days”. And – worse than that – there is simply no prospect of a return to “normal service” any time soon.

And therein lies the source of the panic. For the first time in about twenty years there is no obvious “Celtic in crisis” line to push. There is no imminent departure of a star player or manager, no financial crunch, no dressing room disharmony to splash over the back pages.

The horrible prospect of a true Generation of Green and White Domination is striking fear into the hearts of Sevco’s friends. They don’t like it. But they know it’s coming – and, in fact is already here.

Their pain and their fear is palpable.

  20. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

So, following on from the Sevco-feelgood-non-story-guff of Oliver Burke saying Barrie McKay could get a big-money move to the EPL, we now have another Sevco-feelgood-non-story-guff of Barriedona turning down the non-existent move to stay with “Rangers”!

So, a 4-0 defeat becomes a two goal victory for the gullibles!

Such a poor “Level” of media we have here.

  21. Did I miss something? Was Lawwell elected to these positions or did he stage a military coup and appoint himself?

    Bada

-> Sadly B, as winning trophies and qualifying for the CL every other year isn’t as appealing to players as the money and exposure of playing in the EPL.

However I don’t think it will ever happen, if it did it wouldn’t be the Championship or even National League (formerly the Conference), it would be the 11th or so tier, which is an entirely different question. Also, without wishing to descend into a song debate, unless our songbook was brought into the 21st century then the English press would crucify us.

  22. Paul67 et al

I always had a lot of time for St Mirren back when I was younger, not least because Hugh McLaughlin used to play for them in the late 1960’s and early 1970s. Hughie actually used to play for Third Lanark and only arrived at Love Street after the demise of the Hi Hi in 1967, think it was called liquidation in those days. In his first season he helped the Saints win the old Second Division, no mean feat in those days. Some on here might know Hughie, a very good player in his own right, he is the older brother of Brian, sadly no longer with us, and who played so briefly for the Bhoys.

After Swalex was fired he took them to a tribunal and the only player/employee to speak up on Swalex defence was Tony Fitzpatrick-Fergie still holds him in high regards to this day-Tony Fitz not surprisingly didnt last long after that.

If you can’t get Celtic in Crisis then it has to be Scottish Football in Crisis which in turn means Celtic are un-catchable but for an occasional blip in a cup and the hun is at best 2nd.

Like Jamesgang and being a paisley bhoy for much of my youth I did follow St Mirren from a distance and went to a few games with friends.

Just to confirm that Stewart Gilmour is no longer chairman or on the board there. The new Chairman Gordon Scott is very affable guy, forward thinking ,engages with fans[have a look at their website] and is trying his best to sort out the shambolic club Gilmour left merely 2 seasons after being in top flight and winning the league cup in 2013.
