Gilmour, black and white and blue all over

662

St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, last week suggested the SPL’s 11-1 protected voting rule, which in the past enabled Celtic and Rangers to block changes against their interests, was a reason for him to oppose Scottish football’s league reorganisation plan.

Today, with Rangers consigned to history, Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, proposed a change in voting rules, replacing the requirement to have an 11-1 majority with a 9-3 majority, which Aberdeen chairman, Stuart Milne, called a “major concession”.

This was not linked to the league reorganisation vote, but Stewart Gilmour voted against this change, despite using this voting rule as an excuse for his reluctance to allow reorganisation.  So we now know St Mirren’s objection is nothing to do with voting rules, the brought Aberdeen’s Milne to say on his way out of Hampden, “You need to ask what [St Mirren’s] agenda is”.

After the SFL’s chef exec, David Longmuir, came under pressure from First Division clubs for opposing reorganisation plans, Newco Rangers’ chief executive, Charles Green, was a guest of Gilmour’s at St Mirren’s recent game against Celtic.  Green has been a vocal opponent of the league reconstruction proposals and right on cue, Newco released a statement offering support to Gilmour and Ross County, the other objectors.

For those who like their irony straight from the mouths of the stupid, Newco even suggested St Mirren and Ross County “should not be singled out for criticism. They stood up for what they and their fans believe”.  Just like all those clubs who were criticised bitterly by Newco for voting as their fans wanted a year ago.

Milne added, “St Mirren FC have really got to pose themselves the question qhy are they prepared to put Scottish football in jeopardy for their own selfish interests, which they have been unable to do today.”

Some people have a belief that there will now be an invitation-only SPL II with Newco being invited.  I can tell you with absolute certainty this will not happen.  There will be no Newco in the second tier of Scottish football next season.

Instead what has happened is attitudes have hardened against such moves.  It would not be at all surprising if 10 SPL clubs declined tickets for their visits to St Mirren Park next season – the anger is that serious.  The status quo will be maintained, St Mirren have lost enormous goodwill above and below them, First Division clubs have failed to secure a significant boost in income and the SPL will get on with business.

All of which brings us back to Stuart Milne’s question, what is St Mirren’s real agenda?  I know fine well what it is, but they have not damaged Celtic, they have not assisted Newco in any way and the poor St Mirren fans will inherit the collateral damage.

I know the term licence and membership is used in an interchangeable way but membership is a one off process granted more or less at SFAs discretion in the absence of stated criteria whereas a licence is granted annually by the SFA following a documented process with clearly stated criteria.

As a lower league club National Club Licensing applies to The Rangers and the process starts at the end of this month when clubs put forward a licensing application for next season supported by documentation especially financial that The Rangers should find difficult to supply.

What is not clear from licensing rules if one is not granted is if a club cannot be allowed to take part in any league but the SFA can refuse a licence and publish why.

There might be a case based on lies told by Green to SFA re ownership to rescind membership but regardless whilst I’m not sure if a licence can be rescinded there is a good to strong argument that one will not be granted for next season and if I were a pissed off SFA I would use exactly that threat to introduce some order into proceedings and remind The Rangers that the game is bigger than they are.

I just heard the real reason for St Mirren voting as they did- their plan is to take over Sevco FC and use them as a feeder club, they will then play out of Ferguslie sports centre blooding St Mirrens youth team players in Div 3. Ibrokes will be leased out to the OO and used for marching practice and sponsors are already in place for the new side- Ferguslie mini mart. Further updates to follow

  5. This round of re construction is over, its gone, there will be a concerted effort by some to introduce a diluted form of change to assist the sevco cause, the cats out the bag though the No vote today may just have strengthened the links between some boards, in effect having the exact opposite impact challs gilmour and others wanted.

Shocking news from Boston, BackBay area of the town, or near the finishing point for the Boston Mararthon. No official explanation as to cause.

  8. Hi Paul67,

Good article, thanks for the clarification.

Can’t see why any of this is bad news for Celtic.

Sure many people have been working hard to reform the game but Celtic’s statement is self evident, change would have been good, we bent over backwards to make that work but the existing platform has given us a great season and we are the finest team in Scotland and with Europe’s elite.

Must admit Celic’s statement was bettered by Mr Milne’s forthright comments and Mr Thompson’s excellent statement on behalf of Dundee United.

They have restored my faith in Scottish Football.

    Haven’t posted for a while so….

Well done Lenny and the Bhoys in securing a Cup Final place.

Well done the SevCo non-execs who have set up an inquiry independent of RFC.

Something both the SFA & SPL failed to do.

  9. Dreadful news from Boston O.K. A pal of mine who is a strong Tim and has accompanied me on trips to Paradise is over there to take part in the race. Hopefully he is well away from the carnage.

Gilmour has publically had his bluff well and truly called, and Green is too stupid to keep his mouth shut.

The ramifications for both will be very costly … literally.

  11. Terrible scenes from Boston hope casualties are not as bad as it looks

Does Gilmour not realise a boycott from all fans ,will not be as much as the hun pound on offer from Challs?

  13. For the avoidance of doubt Celtuc do not have the opportunity to decline tickets from St Mirren for the league games in Paisley. St Mirren sell directly to Celtic fans.

It is now time for the Celtic fans to stand up and not wait for the club.

It is simple. Do not buy tickets for St Mirren v Celtic games.

  14. Afternoon all,

Horrific events in Boston today. A 3rd device has been found and the bomb squad are dealing with it.

Just heard from my Tim Partick-born buddy who works less than 100 yards from the end line. He had tickets to watch the event right where the explosions were. Thankfully he decided to give it a miss!

Best wishes to everyone in the great city of Boston!

Here’s a link to the act:

    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2012/1/pdfs/asp_20120001_en.pdf

No mention of the specific word, but it’s covered in 1 (2) (a) (i)

    Some explanatory notes: http://www.legislation.gov.uk/asp/2012/1/notes/division/3/1

First time I’ve read the act. It is full of vague, unmeasurable terms: “perceived, presumed” and “reasonable person”, for example.

This part “Subsection (3) provides, for the avoidance of doubt, that it is irrelevant whether the hatred expressed was also based on any other factor, such as, for example, hatred of a particular football club or player’s playing style as well as their religious affiliation, race or other factor listed at subsection (2)(a) or (b).”

Sounds like you can fall foul if you express outrage at a player’s playing style ! Thank goodness Souness, Rougvie or Hurlock are no longer around.

  16. I can’t see many Aberdeen supporters making the trip to Paisley in the next week or so.

I wonder how many Tims will go to Ross Cty, quite a few I reckon.

  17. Alisdair,

“Bribed”, who knows what RC’s motives truly were.

There stated reasons don’t stand up, considering their situation is similar to most other clubs in the SPL.

Why did their contemporaries, including , for goodness sake, Kilmarnock, think that there was enough in the proposals to vote for them.

In the absence of conclusive evidence, all that remains is conjecture.

However, when you look at who was against reconstruction, Green, Longmuir, Ballantyne and no doubt sections of the SFA, then one must question the motives of RC and their Buddies.

  18. Although disgusted with the actions of Gilmour I can’t help but feel many of the ideas contained within the proposals were against what many supporters in Scotland actually want.

  19. Steinreignedsupreme on

It was an act of rank stupidity for Charlatan to attend our game at St Mirren Park.

It beggars belief that Gilmour allowed it to happen.

  20. Thanks Greenlion2 But his brother has put a message on Facebook that he wasn’t anyway near explosion and he is O.K. so I assume he either phoned or texted his family.

  21. Apologies for the obliqueness above, it was unintended. The objective in hand is to facilitate a crisis which, some hope, will have clubs clamoring to have Newco in top flight football.

This is the plan and we must ensure it is resisted.

Depressing news from Boston. Feel numb watching it.I hope your friend is ok Corkcelt- and that the casualty list is not as bad as feared.

Regarding the SPL vote I can’t say I am surprised. The outcome was well trailed especially after that strutting ass Green was seen at the recent St Mirren versus Celtic match. No problems with County’s opposition to the proposal but like everybody else St Mirren’s role seems a lot more sinister.

St. Mirren are in the SPL, have just won their first trophy in 25 years and have just vetoed a proposal that would have created, or recreated, one professional footballing organisation, and a more equitable distribution of admittedly limited TV money. Barring fear of being in the bottom four next season I do not see any advantage gained by St. Mirren and especially their supporters in their adopted position. Apart from Chick Young I am not aware of any emotional connection between the Saints and the Sinners. You know, we don’t!

  25. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

What ‘s in it for St Mirren? Is it as simple as Gilmour being a Sevco sympathiser and doing what he can to help them?

  26. MurdochauldandHay, I’m off to the Costa Del Sol tomorrow as well. Torremolinos to be precise. I believe the weather is great there at the moment.

Spot on …… We already know that greengo will say or do anything to maximise his pension pot ….. Poor st midden are his latest pawn.(totally duped)…… The detail doesn’t really matter…… The main point is that, following a visit from greengo,, they went public to the effect that they had changed their mind………but at what cost?…….their integrity, and their finances.

Greengo will be chuckling at them tonight, and they will be subject to a major boycott by other Clubs, not for voting against, but for the reason they voted against…you reap what you sow, st midden……..

  29. Corkcelt, was in Benalmadena last week and weather was glorious. Enjoy your San Miguel………

  30. I think that StMirren need to issue a statement explaining their decision otherwise boycotts etc will follow and they as a club will suffer financially. If they think that any other club will come to thier rescue they will be badly let down as the other club may not be there.
