Gilmour remarkable rant against Doncaster, echoes of 2012

236

The Twitter outburst by former St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour against SPFL chief exec, Neil Doncaster’s appointment to the SFA board, called “a bloody disgrace” and “in there as a puppet”, is remarkable on any level.

Despite working inside the game for many years, all Gilmour offered was the kind of Twitter rant any of us could come up with.  In short, that the SFA appointed someone they knew, with influence in the game.  If you are looking for the specifics behind Gilmour’s objection, you will not find it.

What Gilmour didn’t say was who supposedly was working Doncaster as a puppet.

Decisions made by the SPFL in 2012, when the league decided not to invite Newco Rangers (then Sevco) were not universally popular on the St Mirren board.  You heard other echoes of that time last year when Gilmour suggested that one of the Celtic Park backroom team was pulling the strings of Scottish football: “Some of the chairmen that attend the meetings will not take Peter [Lawwell] on. I think he’s got too much power on other clubs.”

We can only guess who Gilmour believes is pulling Neil Doncaster’s strings, but I suggest it is laughable, whoever it is.

On another note, just read ‘Phil’.

I’ve written this before , but: NATIONAL Socialists, British NATIONAL Party, NATIONAL Front, Front NATIONAL, Scottish NATIONALIST Party.

Racist, parochial, bigoted people who rather than look at themselves choose to scapegoat others for their own inadequacy. Their representatives are even lower, feeding off prejudice and racism to secure positions of power.

The Offensive Behavior Act should have surprise none. It would have been much worse had the SNP won another majority.

Same for pictures. Prominence given to green when a story has negative connotations such as bigotry.

I also note a lot that Celt/Celtic player is more likely to be in a negative headline whereas Footballer is more likely to be used otherwise.

However getting it balanced can be tricky–

I don’t understand what the point is, it seems to me to be quite selective. Consider the African National Congress? National Association for the Advancement of Colored People?? The National Gallery. The National Trust (for God’s sake). Just because the word National is in the title means little.

The titles of organisations don’t necessarily mean much, especially if the organization was founded many years ago. The National Socialists (as was pointed out), were not very socialist. And the Labour Party doesn’t really have it’s current membership base in what could once be called ‘labour’.

  19. Great news on the OBaF Act repeal.

Well done to The Celtic Trust, Jeanette Findlay and James Kelly, amongst many others.

James Kelly had to suffer vilification on a Celtic website, including calls for Celts to actively vote against him in a forthcoming election.

Whilst I am pleased with the outcome, this is not over. James Dornan will be looking to draft Strict Liability laws in the next stage of their battle against football fans and to preserve their narrow definition of sectarianism as “all that Irish stuff”. We didn’t see too many prosecutions after Scotland v England matches nor on the political campaign trail.

We are not comfortable enough in our skins as Scots yet in order to accomodate the Irish-Scots, the English-Scots or the Asian-Scots beecause they are not sufficiently 110% Scottish.

Last week I sat in a room with Jeannette, Paul Quigley and James Kelly. The mood was one of elation and expectation but hedged with a modicum of concern. It’s not worth saying why now as today’s vote has obliterated any worries we had.

James Kelly is tonight out with those Labour members who supported his efforts both within Holyrood and out in the wider populous.

  23. I always thought this law was something previous labour or tory or liberal politicians should have debated decades ago and agreed a policy on. The newly elected SNP were forced into having a policy on football fan behaviour and they were caught wanting. From tere its been a shambles. So very well done to Paul67 for getting alternative views to things in the scottish game out there and congratultions to those who campaigned to be listened to. Let’s see if we can move on.

“The newly elected SNP were forced into having a policy on football fan behaviour”

    No they were not.

They are grown ups and elected politicians. No-one forced them and no-one demanded this. They ran headstrong towards this determined to put tartan paint on some legislation.

There was no need for a previous alternative as we already had workable laws which covered all situations of behaviour at football matches that needed to be considered.

The only part of the OBaF Act with any credit is the Offensive Communications section. Given the dominance of the Internet, including twitter and blogs, in modern life, there is a case for more refined laws governing hate speech online.

But like the rest of the OBaF Act, it should never be confined to situations around football or limited to the safe target sectarianism of “all that Ulster stuff”. It should include guidelines on political hate speech, racist hate speech (including anti-English sentiment), and religious hate speech. But the SNP tacked it onto a football bill.

They deserve everything that eventually came to them. They have, unnecessarily caused young men to lose jobs and careers with a draconian approach to the “problem” of singing and chhanting. Scottish football is a fair sized leisure industry and deserves support. Scottish football fan behaviour is far superior to what was demonstrated in the 6o’s 70s and 80s- there is just no comparison. And Scottish football fan behaviour is far superior to the situation in Russia, Italy, the Balkans and the Netherlands. Our behaviour wins approval amongst many foreign football fans but not with our curtain-twitching politicians at home because we are not their idea of good little Scotsmen.

Good Morning. On this day in 1991 the English Court system finally declared that the convictions of the so called “Birmingham Six” were “unsafe” and ordered their release from prison.

*It was a dry Friday morning as I stood at Balloch Station talking to my mates; we had a big game the next day at swinecastle as we chased an honest 10.

My da who also took the same train to work shouted me over, “I want you to keep quiet today son, don’t be shouting about Celtic or Ireland, for the first time in my life (he would be 51 at the time) I’m ashamed to be Irish (actually he was born in Dumbarton of Irish parents)”, this was November 22 1974.

I would leave the country 7 months later and the only information that I would receive of that event was through Canadian media (which then was pro-brit) or the Sunday’s fae hame.

About 11 years later I read a review in the Toronto Star, Saturday edition, about 2 books, one was “Error of Judgement: the truth about the Birmingham bombings” by Chris Mullin and the other about the Guildford Four/Maguire 7 by Ludovic Kennedy which seems to have disappeared.

I took off for the local library to order them, didnae have them in stock, however, they were obliged to try an inter-library loan, eventually I got the call, they were in via Hamilton McMaster University.

Now like some of the oul hauns on here I was brought up believing that british justice was untouchable and even over here in the colonies it mirrored that. These books were an eye opener, and what you have written BRTH has further reminded me of how corrupt a system it really is, and still continues in the land of my birth where the craft still has too much control. Aren’t the Dunblane inquiry files locked away for 100 years.
