Glasgow arms race failure, thanking Sir David

1245

KR Reykjavík recorded a 0-2 win in the Icelandic Cup on Sunday and have one more league game, against bottom club Thor on Thursday, before facing Celtic on Champions League duty a week today.

Celtic have a game this evening against LSK Linz before facing a famous name from our past, Dukla Prague, on Friday.  While the world will be coming through a World Cup climb down Celtic will be facing a committed team in the mid-Atlantic.  There is no room for complacency.

Next week’s qualifier has all the potential to cause a fright.  Ronny Deila will by now know all about Gordon Strachan’s competitive start at Celtic, which cast a shadow he never completely shook off, so it is absolutely critical the manager gets us playing the way he wants us tonight.

Ross McCormack’s route from Murray Park reject at 19 eight years ago to a player Fulham have just bid £11m for is worthy of consideration.  It’s easy for us to point to how Rangers ruined young talented footballers but the stark truth is that for well over a decade Celtic had vastly better youth talent that Rangers but failed to graduate anything like as many as we should have.

McCormack had to go to Motherwell, a club well experienced at nurturing talent, to build his career, but he would have fared no better at Celtic.  Having no space for youth is one of the many unhealthy consequences of having two massive clubs engaged in a football arms race.  Our game was destined to destroy talent.

Fortunately, the man who loaned his name to Murray Park ensured that arms race would end in spectacular fashion, when he sold his club’s assets and liabilities to a liquidation specialist for £1.  In a perverse sort of way, Scottish football should thank him.

Thank you to everyone who supported CQN’s efforts for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookie Jar Foundation, especially the reader who paid an incredible £530 for the signed European Cup canvas.  You are all a credit to our club.

Best wishes to Argentina tomorrow, I hope the overcome Netherlands for the memory of the first worldwide football hero they gave the game, Alfredo Di Stefano.

  1. Other than the odd goal on the sports news I haven’t seen Ross McCormack in action for years. Would he get into our first eleven?

True value is a nebulous fantasy football thing, but I think that’s what you’re getting at.

If sold now, VVD would not fetch 11m and not because he is an inferior player with less sell on value than McCormack. Fulham are paying Harrods prices (oops) for something that they could get in Scotland for Somerfield prices. VVD could accrue more value for Celtic if he stayed for another season in CL games and shone etc, but another season in the SPL only will add nothing to his value.

Many thanks for the info, much appreciated. I will not be ‘with car’, tend to find it detracts from the social opportunities! Will definitely give the Friars Walk Tavern a whirl, and we are not looking for hotspots, so a nice stroll around the bazaars will do us just fine, interspersed with a bite to eat and a few wee drinks here and there. I have been to Dublin twice in the last 3 years, and thoroughly enjoyed that, and the family hails from Achill originally (my grandparents) – which I once visited a few, ahem…51 years ago…!! Thanks again.

  7. In reality Ross McCormack is worth no more than £3m. I don’t see that he is worth anywhere near the money being quoted.

Stephen Dobbie also came through the youth set up at Ibrokes.

In 2010 helped Blackpool to promotion via the play offs and scored in the semi final he was on loan at the time.

In 2011 Scott played and scored in the play off final for Swansea City, his parent club and they were promoted to the EPL.

In 2012 again on loan at Blackpool Scott was on the losing side in a play off final.

In 2013 Dobbie was again part of a squad which won the play offs and entered the dream land of the EPL with Crystal Palace.

Now if entry to the EPL is worth £100m+ does this make Scott the most valuable player in the history of Scottish football? Of course it doesn’t.

He has made a hell of a contribution to clubs in the play offs to the EPL though. It must be unmatched success even barring the failure one year not to win the play off final.

My point here is that the English market is over inflated and with the benefit of some Sky creative reporting and exposure an average to good player can be over inflated in the transfer market. Leeds are a big club. They have a decent support for their level and good coverage on the TV and opther media outlets especially on Sky. This lad is never worth £11m but a collection of media hacks and journalists have hyped this lad to make it look like he is the real deal.

    Ask yourself these questions:

Would Ross McCormack start for Celtic? In my opinion no.

Would Ross McCormack start for Scotland? In my opinion again no.

Is Ross McCormack worth £11m? No way.

In fairness it is not the boys fault that someone will pay this cash for him but to say that he had to go elsewhere to fulfil his potential can’t be right. He was never going to make it at Ibrokes and neither was Dobbie. Both have gone elsewhere and done a job. A very good job for their clubs at time whether as part of the squad or on loan.

Ross McCormack is now the most valuable player in Scottish football history. Does anyone agree that he is worth that tag or is it a hugely inflated fee for a very average to good player? I suspect it would be the latter.

I will look with interest at the next Scotland squad and first 11 to see if Ross McCormack and his fellow Championship high worth striker Rhodes are in there.

Gordon Strachan knows a good few things about fitba we will see what he thinks of these fellas. Gordon if you are looking in and Scotland make the play offs at any time Stephen Dobbie is your man!

  12. If Ross McCormack is worth 11 million smackers then we have a squad surely valued over 150 million??

This concerns me greatly as this asset will not be shown on the balance sheet ;)

If PL every figures this out he will sell the entire squad before Ronny gets a chance to mould us into a 300 million pound squad.

11 million for McCormack is the world off their head??

  13. If Ross McCormack is an £11M player then big Virgil should be worth £30M. Mind you, strikers always go for higher fees.

Shows you what a managerial genius Super Ally is doesn’t it? He got Boyd and Miller for nothing.

Tom Minogue has a tweet on the Etims twitter feed about Thomas Hamilton and his dodgy history prior to his name coming to promenance killing those poor souls at Dunblane Primary School.

It’s a long read but asks a lot of questions about the behaviour of government, police, the judiciary and those in authority at the Queen Victoria boarding school in Dunblane.

Proudbhoy, I hope your good lady returns to good health soon.

Clunks, sorry I’m an IT dumplin and straightforward things like attaching a link are beyond me.

If you access the Etims home page, on the top left hand side, you will see their twitter feed marked. You can access it if you are not on twitter.

A former housemaster at the Queen Victoria Boarding school had made lots of complaints to the school, the governers, social work, Central polis and Government about lots of visits to the school by people not connected to it. Tom had contacted him and this is the basis of his tweet on Etims. Thomas Hamilton’s name is mentioned a lot.
