Gloriously difficult sincerity

Ruud Gullit is now telling us what a wonder-kid Karamoko Dembele is! The portents on this one are not good. The best thing for Karamoko right now would be to be left alone to develop his talent for three years. Comments from international stars is the last thing the boy needs.

I suspect the unprecedented frenzy which greeted his substitute appearance at Cappielow caught his mentors off guard. The decision to play him was made on football grounds; he’d earned the right to be there so was given the chance. That’s fair enough, you can’t hold a player back, no matter what his age. If he’s not challenged you right inhibiting his development, but the best thing for Karamoko would be a long stretch of anonymity.

I can’t get overexcited at Joey Barton charged with betting on 44 football games against SFA rules during his first few months in Scotland. While the same rule applies in England, Newco don’t play in England, so offenses there have been less prevalent, and therefore the rule is less prominent. A cursory punishment would be appropriate.

The media coverage of Barton this morning gives a fascinating slant on what is already a hoary old story. Joey, we are told, may be able to work his way back into his manger’s plans if he is sufficiently sincere when they meet early next week. Joey, of course, is always sincere.

You’ll seldom encounter people with the most alarming thought processes and in any way doubt their sincerity.

If anything, Joey’s persona could do with a little less frankness. Not for the first time, the Newco management will be measuring the wrong metric when trying to assess Barton.

They’re stuck with him, in all his gloriously difficult sincerity.

I suppose the best known young prospect (or new Pele if you like) was Freddie (much) Adu, over hyped and over promoted, by Nike I think, and of course our own Islam Feruz who failed to develop as a player despite a lot of ability. Pele played at the 1958 World Cup at 16 but he was the real deal. Ronaldo was at the WC in 1994 only 17 and Maradona played for Argentina at 16 in 1977 but not at the WC 1978 when his coach deemed him too young. He scored his first international goal against Scotland at Hampden only 18, and showed us what he was all about. Those boys could play.

Closer to home Jimmy Johnstone played in the Scottish Cup Final in 1963, still only 18 and the late Brian McLaughlin got his first appearance for Celtic in 1971 while only 16 years old.

Some players develop early and then falter for any number of reasons. Wee Karamoko is ahead of the game for now, question is will he stay ahead. If he does he will be playing for Celtic in three years time. The bhoy can play.

  5. Re Young Karamoko,

I was listening to Talksport on Tuesday afternoon (I know, I know) and they were discussing him.

One of the guests was the ex Chelsea youth coach and now Crawley manager and his thoughts on it were along the lines of; Tommy McInytre is a very experienced coach, the other coaches are working with him daily and see him playing and developing, therefore it would make sense to trust their judgement. They are not about to do something that would endanger the boy physically or mentally, if they thought he wasnt up to the task, he wouldnt be in the team.

That seemed a fair assessment to me.

Although I personally had some reservations (and still do to a lesser extent!) about it.

Have years of experience regarding youth players, IMO playing a 13 yr old against adults was nonsense, no benefit to player or club, what possessed Chris MCart and team to allow that to happen is beyond me, it my experience it has never happened before, exceptional young talent has in the past played 1 or on rare occasions 2 years above their age group, physically the lad was way out his depth, for Celtic FC to claim their were surprised at the publicity is naively stupid not to say a concern they did not see what repercusions would follow his rare inclusion and the resulting publicity

I have seen many wonder kids who by 18 are playing a lower grade of football than what their talent suggested at 13, he has time to continue to develop technically which can happen no matter what age group he is in, Dutch and Spanish youth teams concentrate on techinical skills, winning and being competitive at 13 are very much secondary attributes, I’m sure Our youth academy will now focus on the lads well being in all aspects of his development, being labelled a wonder kid at 13 can be a burden for a 13 yr old

Dembele has been labelled a wonderkid since the day he first out a pair of boots on for Park Villa. He has lived with that tag since age 9,

The whole jist of my point was not just Dembele’s inclusion in the team but the BEEB’s remastered version of the truth that came out of the guys mouth on the radio with which they decided to berate the club with when in fact the guy did not even mention Celtic if I heard correctly. The guy was not happy with Ladbrokes and football in general. The BEEB turned it into to criticism of Celtic. I’m happy to have a go at club when deserved but that was not deserved and was Levelled fived onto the BEEB,

There are many numpties around in youth football I know I encountered them regularly who labelled boys wonder kids, it’s wrong and gives the lad’s coaches extra work keeping his feet on the ground reminding him it is a team game not withstanding he’s also a kid who should enjoy being just that a kid

Celtic IMO deserved the criticism, Celtic FC are the largest and most powerful club in Scotland, we are the only club in Scotland with a full time academy for young players at St Nianians school in Kirkintilloch near Lennoxtown, our young players train every day as well as school lessons, we should be setting an example, and quite rightly we should be held to the highest standards in terms of youth development.

  11. MOONBEAMS, LIONSROAR67

I’m with Moonbeams here; Celtic have done nothing wrong. I posted this earlier:

Another example of gross mis-reporting and misrepresentation from the BBC News website.

The headline states Children’s commissioner warning on football ‘child exploitation’ with a picture of Karamoko Dembele and goes on to say ”His comments follow the decision by Celtic to feature 13-year-old Karamoko Dembele in its under-20 side against Hearts on Monday.”

In fact his comments don’t follow on from Karamoko’s substitute appearance; in the accompanying audio from the Good Morning Scotland interview Tam Baillie, the Children’s Commissioner, states clearly that his comments were based upon the Ladbrokes decision to open a Book on various aspects of the young lads career. Nothing to do with Celtic whatsoever. Ladbrokes have subsequently closed the book (no bets taken) and written to apologise to the Children’s Commissioner.

The main thrust of Mr Bailies concern is the “under the table” contracts and deals that some clubs involve children (or more accurately, their parents or advisers) in. There is no reference made to Karamoko’s participation in the game or any implicit or explicit criticism of Celtic.

    Shabby journalism at its best!

The decision to play him will, I am sure, have been taken with due consideration to his size, age and ability and, I would imagine, in consultation with his parents.

If he wasn’t ready, IMHO, Celtic wouldn’t have fielded him.

So what you’re saying is Celtic should prevent him developing by forcing him to play with players nearer his own age but not his technical level?

  13. There is the ‘Latin’ (sic), absolving yourself of the ignorance of others, but don’t forget… there is also the ‘French’ (sic) – “sans intention comique”. I sort of like the ‘French’ (sic)… loosely translated it means – taking the piss.

  16. cathedral view on

What an odious piece of reporting from the BBC and some thing I would expect from the tabloid rags not the national broadcaster.

Mr Baillie states very clearly at the start of the recorded interview that his issue is with the bookmakers actions and nothing else. The interview then moves onto a wider discussion on children and the football industry.

At no point is he critical of Celtic or the decision to play Dembele yet the entire slant of the article would have you thinking otherwise.

Celtic should ask for and explanation as to how this type of spin makes it onto the BBC website.

  19. TIMBHOY3 on 6TH OCTOBER 2016 2:42 PM

So you don’t think Barton could say to a former team-mate “Can you make sure the ball goes out for a throw in before the 3rd minute. I’ll split the winnings”?

That’s what Matt Le Tissier(sp?) was done for, if I recall correctly.

  20. I would be surprised if the young lad was involved without Brendan Rodgers being involved in the discussion. We’ve dipped his toe in the water, time will tell if it was a mistake or not. Personally I don’t think it’s a big issue.

  21. LIONROARS67 on 6TH OCTOBER 2016 2:52 PM

Well you’ve definitely criticised the Academy staff.

Perhaps on this occasion they’ve made an exceptional decision for an exceptional talent. On the other hand maybe he’s (or his advisors – if he has any) have been saying he’s too good to play at the level he’s at, he should be in with big boys and they gave him his 9 minutes to show he’s not ready.

If what they’re doing there is producing the likes of KT, then I’m happy to trust that they know what they’re about.

On his birthday, what better gift than a recipe, from Bourne, for Soup?

Put an Ox´s Head, well washed, into 13 gallons of water, add a peck and a half of pared potatoes, half a quartem of onions, a few carrots and a handful of pat herbs, thicken it with two quarts of oatmeal (or barley meal) and add pepper and salt to your taste.

Set it to stew with a gentle fire early in the afternoon, allowing as little evaporation as may be, and not skimming off the fat, but leaving the whole to stew gently over the fire, which should be renewed and made up at night.

Make a small fire under the boiler at seven o´clock in the morning, and keep adding as much water as will make up the loss by evaporation, keeping it gently stewing until noon, when it will be ready to serve for dinner.

The whole may be divided into 52 messes, each containing (by a previous division of meat and fat), a piece of meat and fat and a quart of savoury nourishing soup.

The expenses of the meals are: Ox´s Head 2 shillings and 6 pence; Potatoes, onions, etc 1 shilling and 1 penny; 2 Qts of Oatmeal 11 pence; Cost exclusive of fire and cooking: 4 shillings and 6 pence.
