Goal shyness hampers Celtic

880

Overall I was pleased with many aspects of Celtic’s play yesterday.  We dominated large parts of the game and got in and around the Hearts penalty area often enough to score the proverbial barrel load.

Hearts scored a good goal.  The flick from Beattie and run from Skacel were both exquisite, although a deflection off the blameless Kelvin Wilson was crucial.  Enough has been said about the second Hearts goal already.  Defensively we were good.

Midfield also played well, to a point, forcing Hearts into retreat for all but the opening 20 minutes of the second half.  Ki Sung-Yueng should have scored twice but he’s never been a player for back post headers and I was more surprised he found himself in that position than he missed both opportunities.  He is a player who continues to impress.

The question we should turn our attention to is why Celtic didn’t score more goals?

It is probably not an exaggeration to suggest Emilio Izaguirre is the best left back at the club in 30 years.  Skilful and intelligent in possession, Celtic look composed when he is on the field, but he’s being kept out of the team by a free transfer from Aberdeen because Charlie Mulgrew is manufacturing the most crucial item in the game – goals.

I’m close to advocating ‘Give the ball to Charlie’ tactics.  He has the ability to fire in remarkably dangerous crosses and has an instinctive awareness that the purpose of the game is to score goals.  Kris Commons shares this awareness but Kris has had a wretched season and is still rescuing his game from injury and early season loss of form.

In these circumstances, Neil Lennon cannot afford to play Izaguirre if it involves dropping Mulgew as this would severely hamper Celtic’s ability to put the ball in the net.  If the manager wants to use Emilio, particularly in Europe next season when retaining possession will be crucial, Charlie has to play left midfield.

Scoring goals is the primary responsibility of the strikers.  None of Celtic’s current crop are impressing at the moment, but we need to look further upstream first.

We have an outstanding original canvass painting of Neil Lennon available for purchase on eBay to kick start our summer charity fundraising. This year the beneficiaries will be Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Martin Chambers Foundation and The Neuroblastoma Alliance, Aberdour PS PTA, The Haven, Blantyre. The painting, by US based artist, Joseph Gormley, is an outstanding memento of our manager during these times.

So when people were discussing the SPL share transfer, there is actually a UEFA/SFA licence hurdle which trumps this?

Agree with all of that . I somtimes wonder if there arent a few journalists out there thinking “why didnt I get on that story?”

Without detracting anything at all from alex Thomson WE all knew there was a ticking bomb there. Kudos to AT for having the cojones to get it out there.

The Alex Thomson 15 minutes was the best I’ve ever heard on Snyde. It felt so good to hear a neutral destroy the laptop loyal. Keevins was taught a lesson tonight and if he was a budding journo, he’d be changing career tomorrow. The more he attempted to stutter his way out of it, the more embarrassing it got for him. I just wish it was on TV because it would have been like the 1960 US Presidential Election head to head where Nixon sweated buckets as JFK outwitted him in front of millions.

I’ve made the point before that although the huns sing Rule Britannia, its actually us who get far more just and favourable press from England. It has taken an English journalist to expose the Scottish MSM live on air, in such a manner that all Celtic fans must have felt a strong sense of vindication after listening to it. Alex Thomson has inflicted more damage to the shameful lazy pro-hun hacks of Scotland than 1000 callers ever have, not matter how good Terry and co are.

    Well done Alex.

During the week Wigan beat Manchester United, with Caldwell, McArthy, McArthur, Maloney and Sammon on the pitch at the same time, all former SPL players. Sean didn’t play tonight. Caldwell played against Van Persie for Celtic twice, came off second best. Not tonight though, well done Gary, and well done Wigan!

    Árd Macha:

A very significant one. To be a member of the SPL requires a UEFA license. That’s in the SFA regulations. And the licenses “cannot be transfered” between legal entities.

“3.1.1 The Licence Applicant may only be a football club, that is the legal entity fully responsible for the football team participating in national and international competitions and which is the legal entity member of the Scottish Football Association (Full or Associate Member). The licence applicant is responsible for the fulfillment of the club licensing criteria. This membership must have been in place at the start of the licence season for a minimum period of three consecutive years.

3.3.1 UEFA Licence Awards for Scottish Premier League Clubs (SPL)

A Licence cannot be transferred from one legal entity to another.”

The proof of what it means is actually contained in the SFL Licensing criteria, because if, say, Dundee won the Scottish Cup they would have to qualify to play in Europe via a special provision.

A NewCo Rangers would need three things to play in the SPL.

    1) A vote from the SPL clubs.

    2) The SFA to overlook their own licensing criteria

    3) UEFA to allow both of these, as well as granting an exemption of their own.

When the UEFA spokesman told Alex Thomson the other day that they “have faith” in the “local association” doing the right thing … they are saying, “We know what the rulebook says. They know what the rulebook says. We don’t forsee the rules being overlooked.”

A NewCo Rangers will not be in the SPL mate.

  19. James Forrest and others re. Cheats’ charter

I read a tweet from rtc querying the licence referred to in that document, and it emerged that it was actually referring to a UEFA licence, not an SFA one, and that the SFA had nervously confirmed this.

    The Ghood will prevail:

The way I read it (and RTC tweeted earlier that he personally called the SFA to confirm this), the European Licensing Criteria will be the primary legislation here. That says the license cannot be granted until the club has existed three years.

It doesn’t matter which part of the SFL they start in. They cannot play in the SPL for three years. Thereby, it would be at the bottom.

Of course, all of this can be circumvented if they simply buy another club, kill that club and assume its identity ….

The St Mirren scenario now makes sense, eah?

The Scottish Press might not know the rules. The SPL might be unclear on them.

But the Craig Whyte team knows them alright. And they were prepared.

    up_over_goal:

Yes, the SFA confirmed that a UEFA Club License is required to play in the SPL.

Yeah, saw it. thought black’s challenge on Joe was shocking. I agreed at the the time that Vic’s challenge against the huns merited a red, just on the fact that it was 2 footed. Vic took the ball and never touched whittacker. That challenge on Joe yesterday was one footed, over the ball and left his leg in a hell of a state.

We need to put things in to perspective, on the 5th of november we were 15 points behind, went on a fantastic run and have won the league at a canter.

I’m dissapointed about yesterday and the CIS final, but the league was always the biggie.

    HH.

    Please enlighten this numpty.

So if the sfa rewrite the rules and start a new league, whatever that may be, a hewco hun can NOT play in the top league for at least 3 years ?

Or is the new rules just that, new rules to allow a newhun co to what they wish ?

I think the central point is being missed here actually. The point isn’t so much about the UEFA Licensing aspect … which alone dynamites NewCo Rangers. The crucial, and overlooked, part is the following line, which appears in BOTH the SPL licensing criteria AND the SFL one:

“A Licence cannot be transferred from one legal entity to another.”
