Goal shyness hampers Celtic

880

Overall I was pleased with many aspects of Celtic’s play yesterday.  We dominated large parts of the game and got in and around the Hearts penalty area often enough to score the proverbial barrel load.

Hearts scored a good goal.  The flick from Beattie and run from Skacel were both exquisite, although a deflection off the blameless Kelvin Wilson was crucial.  Enough has been said about the second Hearts goal already.  Defensively we were good.

Midfield also played well, to a point, forcing Hearts into retreat for all but the opening 20 minutes of the second half.  Ki Sung-Yueng should have scored twice but he’s never been a player for back post headers and I was more surprised he found himself in that position than he missed both opportunities.  He is a player who continues to impress.

The question we should turn our attention to is why Celtic didn’t score more goals?

It is probably not an exaggeration to suggest Emilio Izaguirre is the best left back at the club in 30 years.  Skilful and intelligent in possession, Celtic look composed when he is on the field, but he’s being kept out of the team by a free transfer from Aberdeen because Charlie Mulgrew is manufacturing the most crucial item in the game – goals.

I’m close to advocating ‘Give the ball to Charlie’ tactics.  He has the ability to fire in remarkably dangerous crosses and has an instinctive awareness that the purpose of the game is to score goals.  Kris Commons shares this awareness but Kris has had a wretched season and is still rescuing his game from injury and early season loss of form.

In these circumstances, Neil Lennon cannot afford to play Izaguirre if it involves dropping Mulgew as this would severely hamper Celtic’s ability to put the ball in the net.  If the manager wants to use Emilio, particularly in Europe next season when retaining possession will be crucial, Charlie has to play left midfield.

Scoring goals is the primary responsibility of the strikers.  None of Celtic’s current crop are impressing at the moment, but we need to look further upstream first.

We have an outstanding original canvass painting of Neil Lennon available for purchase on eBay to kick start our summer charity fundraising. This year the beneficiaries will be Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, Martin Chambers Foundation and The Neuroblastoma Alliance, Aberdour PS PTA, The Haven, Blantyre. The painting, by US based artist, Joseph Gormley, is an outstanding memento of our manager during these times.

Lovely warm day -way down south . The 6 month summer is coming .

Operation Hornet finally buzzes into view.–Minty Moonbeams and the Bank of Scotland / Minty Moonbeams and HBOS is just a wee piece of a big ,big scandal. It will be interesting to see how the Hunnish Hordes react when they finally twig to the degree to which Sir David funded his succulent lifestyle with money being extorted from the business entity called Glasgow Rangers.

Talk of a 17 match ban for Lennie once again shows there out to get him they want him to walk away.Well all those who think Neil should keep his powder dry and not challenge cheating Refs, It is not his way he doesnt do the behind your back he tells it like it is in yer face.I think the SPL managers are a bunch of weak livered pygmmies they should be getting together and challenging the powers that be about the witch hunt against Neil Francis Lennon.Neil the majority of Celtic supporters are 100% with you on your solo crusade for fairness in Scottish football.H.H.

  3. Regarding the Radio Clyde phone-in – if you approach it as a light entertainment/alternative comedy offering rather than a serious football discussion programme I find that you get much more out of it.

    I love it.

  4. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!..Truth and Justice will always prevail on

I support NEIL 100% on his resistance to the obvious bias (to put it mildly) against everything Celtic…..

The Alex Thompson 20 minutes on SSB last night was very good, worth a listen.

Its very refreshing to hear from someone with a neutral eye especially when keevins and co don’t have the power to simply drown him out when he made a point

However, immediately after the AT 20 minutes a caller (from Larkhall perhaps?) tried his best to string two words together to the effect that lenny was out of order and then Keevins and co kept that subject up (he deserves it blah blah blah) for the next 10 minutes or so before I resorted to type and turned off

The AT fullah had a right go at the standard of Glasgow journalism with keevins and friend cowering behind, “im a sports writer not an intelligent person” defence

He also claims that 3 prominent Glasgow journos including spiers, have said it’s time for Scottish journos to correct the “succulent lamb” years

He claimed that a Scottish journo said on twitter that he would slap timmy Thomson. Al

Slightly disappointed that AT did not tell Keevins and co if they don’t understand what was happening at ipox to simply look on timternet. The timternet has got it right for about 12 months and MSM has got it wrong and only spoke about it for 3 months

Its worth a wee listen if there is link available and you don’t listen to the phone ins normally

  6. Alex Thomson is a good journalist. But what gives him the edge over the ragtag bunch of incompetents we are used to is that he has no agenda and no favourite. Now impartiality is recognised as a vital quality for a journalist in most places, but not in Scottish football.

The MSM could have written stories about Murray, Rangers, EBTs etc., a long time ago. They had the connections after all. But they quite simply didn’t want to rock the boat. They were happy to do the puff pieces about what a great entrepreneur Sir David is, how Walter deserves a knighthood as so on.

What the Alex Thomsons of this world bring is a desire for truth and not spin. To dig beneath the accepted lines and find the real story. And, knowing that there is a story to be told, following the job through.

Doing the basics and doing them well. That’s what separates Thomson from the rest.

Satisfying to hear the SSB pundits taken out their comfort zone last night.

Hilarious to hear Shug complain about not being able to get a word in- he couldn’t do what he normally does when someone gets the better of him ie. turn the volume down and call him a fundamentalist. Those are the callers who have to tell porkies to the Clyde researchers about what they wish to talk about as if its anything to complicated they won’t get through.

If Clyde want to win the ratings war get AT back on with Phil and give Huge, Daryll and the other clowns a roasting for 2 hours.

  8. The SFA are a joke if this 17 match ban rumour is true

There are plenty managers who have said and done far worse and not been banned; heard someone say Neil Lennon should be more like Craig Brown ffs!!!

Aye, be like a guy who punched a foreign manager on the touchline, squared up to an opposing clubs chairman, sung dodgy songs down the phone to an ex burd while pished. What a shining beacon for Neil to aspire to!

No chance Celtic will take this lying down, time to kick some SFA arses once again!

Great to hear AT last night put a few noses out of joint.

When asked about which journalist made the threat he said the name will come out in court. BOOM.

Hand grenade lobbed into the laptop loyal bunker.

I bet the keyboard hard man was slipping on his own effluent on his way to the little boys room after that bombshell.

There’s a John Lewis in Swindon-I’ll nip over later and have a look for one.

Let’s hope the 2 year-old in question is an average-sized 2yo,or we’re all wasting our time!

Knowing ole Johnny Clash loves a programme is enough for me, even though we can’t get Clyde in the sun-kissed Elysian backwater that is ole D and G.

  13. no doubt Derek Adam’s 18 match touchline ban a couple of years ago will be trotted out as a precedent by the SFA/LL etc

  14. Remember preferred bidder being named does not equal a sale no matter what the media say!

There are more twists left in this tale….and the projected outcomes are now just starting to be prepared for in the media.

Rangers 2012 in SFL Division 3 odds are shortening.

I’ll bet you get some belters on the Radio Nith football phone -in! Disgruntled Doonhamers banging on about allegations of succulent lamb being taken by the Football & Farming correspondent from the ole D&G Standard.

You wouldn’t see him for dust if Lenny was stood infront of him. The club should have him removed everytime he enters paradise. He is acting like a hun

  19. You have to laugh at the hypocrisy of Clyde and it’s pundits, for weeks they have been forever bleating about “can we not get back to talking about football?”

Well last night, other than the Tomo moligation, they had plenty to talk about, 2 rousing Scottish Cup ties, some outstanding goals, a few controversial decisions but what was the only topic on the agenda?- The bloodlust to crucify Neil Lennon, 2 minutes was enough for me, sickening stuff.

    Talk about football? My erchie.

Neil Francis Lennon stand up. Stand up for the champions, stand up for me but most of all stand up for yersel. Be true to youself and the spirit of Celtic Football Club. No matter what they do to you it won’t matter a jot. Stand up Celtic man. Hail Hail.

  22. Corruption

The corruption looked up at me from the page

When I think back to the time I develop a rage

How deep did it go and who was involved?

Will it ever all come out, will it be solved?

A corruption so simple didn’t think they’d be caught

When I look back, all the games were for naught

How could we succeed with an establishment bent

Right over backwards to get their per cent

All corruption is evil unless it’s your scheme

When you look back it had all seemed pristine

How could you have been so blinded with greed?

Because look what’s grown from that little seed
