God help Benfica if Celtic are inspired by Estadio Nacional

241

Years before Celtic Quick News I was at an event with ten of the Lisbon Lions in attendance, before playing football later that evening.  They say you should never meet your heroes but ‘they’ never met the Lions.  Bobby Murdoch asked about my job and spoke about his wife’s job, showing the kind of interest in people, and pride in his own family, which was refreshing from a football legend.

Jinky was Jinky; irrepressible.  He was last to arrive and as he walked into the room looked at his team mates with a cheeky grin, “Am I in trouble again?”  Bertie Auld told me we should have signed Kenny Miller (this was years before we did) but Tommy Gemmell, who knew a thing or two about scoring a great goal, said “Every goal I’ve ever seen was a great goal”.  Tommy was a full back who scored cracking goals in two European Cup finals but his point was simple, when they hit the back of the net, they’re all great goals.  Listening to him talk made you want to go get kick a football.

That night I was absolutely buzzing, I went out and played the best game in my life.  Sharing in the achievements of the Lions had a profound effect, I knew I would play well, even before kick-off.

This morning Neil Lennon took his players to Estadio Nacional, yesterday telling a media conference, “We will train at the stadium again in the morning and let these players have a feel of what is a special piece of history for our club”.

God help Benfica tonight if the spirit of that great old stadium seeps into the pours of the Celtic players today. Let me at them!

Delighted Downfall has finally been reviewed!  Positively too, you’ll not be surprised to learn.

Orders are now open for the very first CQN Annual, get it here!

  2. For what it`s worth, I really don`t expect Celtic to lose tonight. No wishful thinking, simply a belief that we are now good enough to leave Lisbon with a point or three.

  3. Come On Lenny’s Lions of Lisbon!!!!

But have to admit to being V E R Y nervous about tonight.

A cool, calm and disciplined performance and we’ll do fine though.

    HAIL! HAIL!

i’m not confident , but this Celtic team is full of surprises.

A good performance, that’s the main thing.

Never an optimist,I frmly believe we can do this.

Our players now walk on to the pitch, thrust out their chests, and say

we ARE good enough for these fans.

It ain’t that long ago they thought otherwise.

    And so did we.

It’s a credit to the players that they have come so far,and it’s a credit to the management that they have been nursed.

Win or lose tonight,I’ll be proud of our achievements in Europe this season.

Our results have put us back on the map, that’s good enough for me.

    …………..

To show a bit of balance, do you think a Hamas commander would find he death of any Israeli civillians regrettable?

  8. Keep it tight celtic, we have the pace and cutting edge to punish on the break if required.

Nervous but feeling good about tonight

  9. Ban Ki-moon, UN secretary-general, says Israel has the right to defend itself but a ground offensive would be an escalation of the conflict. In other words, he is saying it’s OK for Israel to bomb Gaza and massacre more than a hundred Palestinians. While the man who could stop the bombing in an instant has been posing as a friend of democracy in Burma. Is there a single statesman anywhere in the “West” who will condemn Israel? It’s desperate.

On a brighter note, let’s get that score draw tonight. Come on, Lenny’s Lions.

The grim statistics behind Middle East grief

    20Rate this

Some statistics for you summing matters up in Gaza after six days of bombardment. They come from the Euro-Mid Observer for Human Rights.

They maintain teams of monitors across Gaza who note each incoming blast.

    In a statement they say:

“Euro-Mid Observer for Human Rights is calling on the UN Commissioner and EU countries to take a clear stand against the ongoing Israeli breaches of the international law in Gaza, and to take urgent steps to end the continuing bloodbath among civilians.”

So you can make your own judgement as to whether or not the following is reliable but the figures are in line with Hamas government and IDS stats.

    Here are their findings:

There have been an estimated 1,643 Israeli missile strikes in six days: 364 missiles were fired by the Israeli navy, there were 1,114 air strikes and 165 artillery shells.

One hundred and ten Palestinians have been killed including 25 children, 14 senior citizens and 12 women. Seventy-two per cent were civilians.

Eight hundred and ninety one Palestinians, including 277 children, 164 women and 62 seniors have been wounded.

There have been 664 rockets fired from Gaza which have hit southern Israel.

Three Israeli civilians have been killed and 10 civilians and four soldiers injured.

Israel has bombarded 822 government and civilian buildings in Gaza, completely destroying 71, and severely damaging 187 and partially damaging 559.

Even with a defeat, we are not out of the last 16 BUT a win or a draw tonight would represent a hell of a culmination of a journey that many of us didn’t see possible after Ross County.

We should all be proud no matter what happens tonight.

  12. Our group is delicately poised but reigning champs Chelsea will be in a spot of bother if Juve beat them in Turin and Shakhtar win in Denmark.

This will guarantee Shakhtar qualification, and a point for Juve in Ukraine in matchday 6 will mean bye bye Chelsea. I would enjoy that,

  13. Watching SSN before I logged on and saw the players standing in Estadio National
