Going out of business chasing unrealistic dreams

112

With the Billy McNeill statue unveiling, the Celtic Foundation Bucket Collection and our own defeat on Saturday I missed out on the goings-on in the Championship until watching Sportscene last night. I’m not sure if Hibernian are good enough to win the league but the habit of scoring last minute goals, and the exploitative attitude which was on show against Queen of the South, is a strong portent.

Hard on the heels of this penny dropping The Herald this morning asked us to consider increasing the capacity of the Premiership to allow an un-promoted Newco to play top flight football next season. There will be a strong blog on this later, but the thought occurred to me:

Rangers died chasing this:

While Newco are going the same way chasing this:

    Hail Hail fella.

Well, I’m afraid that Celtic fans and, fans of other clubs will just have to keep their powder dry until….SB-renewal time….that, is when fans of all clubs will be ‘all’ powerful.

Till then…connections with other fans have to be made.

    Then,… a joint-statement…along the lines of….

….”If, you let the huns into the top league…we, the fans of all clubs in the league will enforce a boycott and, starve the game of finance till you get the fact that, fans won’t be taken for fools.”

    HH

  2. Expose the cheating, …strip the titles.

Justice must be seen to be done.

    Anything else is contemptible.

No more looking the other way.

    Fight back ffs.

  3. A bit slow on the uptake Paul.

I have been telling people on here for years that the seeds of Ranger’s problems were sown in Lisbon on May 25th 1967.

I enjoy your posts on here, they’re always worth reading and i find myself agreeing with much of what you say normally.

But I don’t think it’s hype to say that the SPFL is a very poor league.

The evidence is staring us right in the face-

    1. Scottish teams results against moderate European opposition (this season alone Celtic were comfortably beaten over 2 legs by teams who stumbled to 5th and 6th in the Swedish and Norwegian league; Aberdeen, st Johnstone and Inverness all eliminated in early qualifiers by teams who themselves never made the group stages of the Europa league);

    2. Players from the non-league in England are coming to the SPFL and doing a job. The guy who gave Lustig a torrid time, marvin Johnson, was signed from Kidderminster harriers. The guy moult who scored twice on Saturday was signed from Wrexham, who in turn had signed him from the mighty Nuneaton town.

Inverness won the Scottish cup with guys signed from Stevenage, Macclesfield town, Kidderminster harriers (again!), Newport county and Kendal town.

Now people will probably go on about Jamie vardy to try and argue that the English non-leagues provide a rich seam of talent but vardy is not the norm in the EPL and also did his thing in the English lower leagues for a spell before going to the premiership.

The fact is guys who were playing in the English non-leagues a year ago are coming to Scotland, finding it to be on their level, and are scoring and playing well against Celtic and other SPFL teams.

Now the league doesn’t need to have some form of rangers in it to be worth winning. Any competition that you enter is worth winning but when we are signing guys on relatively decent wages and transfer fees questions will always be asked when we struggle against teams assembled on a shoestring from non-league English football.

My beef isn’t that the SPFL lacks a form of rangers or any other team; I’d gladly never ever play that shower of cheats ever. My beef is that the league is a really poor sub-standard collection of teams who play a form of football, but not as we know it.

Incidentally the presence of a form of rangers in the SPFL next year will not arrest the decline you see in front of you. You will be invited to a bigotfest showcasing the talents of nadir ciftci and that season’s borrowed Tyler Blackett-type on one side and nicky law and nicky Clark on the other.

Truly a spectacle to get football banned!

The respective boards of Celtic, Sevco, the SFA and the SPFL may be pleased to “have rangers and the old firm game back.” Those of us with half a brain will see it for what it is- two bald men fighting over a comb.

FFers opine (again) on the reasons for their demise:

“IMO it was a mixture of Natzis,Fenians and the Romanist cult.”

    I’m here all week…

  7. KevJ

The PLC can stick their bigotry where the sun don’t shine.

I wont be associated with their attempt to look the other way.

I will be screaming and shouting about the hun and mason cheating, until we stand up united against it.

This is the end game….if we let them blatantly cheat,…we deserve to be shafted.

But,,,I tell you this…..the Celtic support will soon rise up…..and we will be there

    Hail Hail Kevj

Keep telling them how it is.

  8. “They are making Rangers synonymous with cheating and bigotry and this will not only continue, it will get worse.”

No. You did that all on your own.

Welcome back (even if only briefly)

The only way that I’d agree with JJHS, is there is some kind of sense of entitlement creeping in to some of what I hear and read from our support.

I’m not really clear what it is people want from RD. other than better European results, which is fair enough. He’s got a long way to go before he’s as bad in the league as NL was in 12/13 – 79 points with 7 draws and 7 losses. Was is just that Barca win that prevented NL getting the same treatment?

  11. Paul67

    I hope that’s the case.

We have lots on the blog suggesting inaction will be the case. Preying on fears, is an easy crop to sow, when we look at recent events.

Even the guys who got up off their backsides and took Res 12 forward, appeared to have met with some barriers, from the club,at least initially.

Auldheid has however, confirmed the club’s more recent support on several occasions now.

Find the haranguing of Auldheid on here at times nothing short of disgraceful.

Many thanks for your kind words.

I seem to recall a laddie called Falconbridge , delaying us a title party at Dunfermline in 1998. Think he came from a lower league English team.

Examples of these type of things are many, both when we have had good teams and bad.

    Yes, Europe was poor.

The blame for this IMO lies fairly and squarely with the board and our signing policy.

We are always in transition at a vital part of the season.

Always integrating a new defence or striker or keeper.

Until that policy changes our Euro results will be inconsistent.

    HH

Yes, Europe gas been poor this yeR

  15. Weeminger

I’m not bothered about RD….that situation will take care of itself.

P me off a bit….that posters are comparing Celtic fans to those bigoted wretches…..well out of order imo.

Yet….they fail to mention the Tories, Lords, and masons on the Celtic PLC.

    Strange eh.

Celtic fans will never resemble those sevco dogs….ever.

As for entitlement…..I think you are way off the mark there.

  16. Peat of Islay,

Agree Deila must go now. New manager needs a chance to make some moves in January and prepare for CL qualifiers.

    Paul67,

We are dying paying a CEO £1M / year on a circa £50M revenue in a one horse race.

Why no analysis of our illustrious CEO. Here are some steps for a hint.

    – taken £8.6M out of the club

    – Allowed £50M revenue to slip thru his fingers with 2 CL failures

    – recruitment policy now failing as projects gather dust out on loan

    – Mowbray appointment ; now Ronny

    – weakened the team and playing structure over successive transfer windows

    – failed to build Celtic as a club with CL revenue without any competition

Of course we can finger point at Sevco and all their failings. It’s Celtic that concern us and the complete apathy surrounding the club. The fans will drift away gradually …there was less than 30k there on Saturday on a mild December day.

The only forward movement in the last 20 minutes was an exhausted Tierney launching long balls to the two statues at the edge of the box. Some players are doing an Eden Hazard in a clever way. Commons and Forrest hid and contributed zero. It seems some players want Ronny out too.

  17. The Green Man on 21st December 2015 11:45 am

It’s definitely not a widespread thing and certainly not a defining feature like that lot. It’s just a slight hint of ‘any loss is unacceptable’ with some people.

  18. Good morning everyone if you have received an email from me DO NOT open think I,ve been hacked, address starts lmshields. Thanks and sorry about the bother. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Losing is part of football….that’s the way it goes.

We got beat by motherwell….fair enough.

I think there are larger issues at stake.

I don’t blame RD…I blame the board for our recent decline in Europe.

Even RD should be able to win the league….It is not exactly challenging, it is easy to win a crap league.

The buck should stop with the board….but they just hide when things are tough.

PL is a dinosaur….he should retire.

    We need real change.

  20. the glorious balance sheet on

    Wee Minger 1135-

I put our poor league form in 12/13 being down to it being that group of players’ first campaign in the Champions League and I think some of them sometimes took their eye of the ball domestically or were exhausted by European exploits.

    From memory – we lost 1-2 to st Johnstone the weekend before our first CL group game and Neil Lennon commented that some players had their eye on the upcoming CL game;

    We lost 0-2 at home to Kilmarnock on the Saturday after losing to a jordi alba injury time goal in Barcelona;

    We drew 1-1 at home to st Johnstone on the Sunday after beating Barcelona 2-1;

You can forgive the team those domestic results in that context.

  21. the glorious balance sheet on 21st December 2015 12:00 pm

You probably can but despite the fact that we could still win a treble and get the highest points total since 2002, people seem unable to give RD any leeway at all.

  22. Our many-heidit, pop-up impersonator is pittin’ in a fair ou’l shift , eh!……………

    ………..such resilience, such persistence,

    ………………..such vitriol.

    He’s a keeper!

    Oh aye.

  23. Weeminger

RD has had plenty of leeway.

Lots of Celtic fans don’t seem to think RD is the answer….and imo, you cant blame them.

As I said….its one thing winning an crap league, but quite another being good enough to do relatively well in Europe.

European football gives the club much needed revenue.

So….you can beat Hamilton or Aberdeen until the cows come home, but is that the benchmark for Celtic?

I wouldn’t think so, considering our European history.

    Anyway…..Hail Hail

  24. The Green Man

Will the league be magically transformed for the new man or will he too be charged with winning a crap league a valueless treble and only judged on his Euro results, come to think of it was Neil judged only on his Euro results??
