Good Friday is just another Friday for you

1828

Sometimes it seems there is a constant struggle underway for the heart and soul of Celtic.  It is incredible that for 125 years a community has managed to retain the conviction to help the less fortunate which drove forward those who formed the club.

Scarcely a day goes by without me receiving a message from someone offering to help those in need.  This week it was tables for the Wayside Club Gala Dinner (Saturday 27 April, check it out here), someone send in a box set of the Byrds, to raise money ‘for the homeless’, and a reader parted with a precious top signed by the Seville team, which I’ve to collect in Glasgow.

Much of this goes on below radar but when a call to arms is needed it goes out in impressive clarity; the Wee Oscar campaign slipped into an infrastructure established when Kano took ill a few years back (hope you are doing well, Kano and we hear from you soon).  Believe me, some of the work, and many of the discrete donations, would blow you away.

None of this is random.  At some point each and every person who has stepped forward did so, knowingly or not, because of the way the Celtic Movement infected them.

A number of Celtic fans, and one former treble winning captain, are helping the Celtic Charity this year with the objective of encouraging each Celtic fan to raise £125.  It feels like the right thing to do and if you’ve not brought yourself up to speed with the project yet, do it this weekend (more information here).

There will be formal events throughout the year but if you want to do a sponsored run/walk/cycle/jig, this is your invitation.  You are reading this stuff because of your link all the way back to that hall in the Calton; get involved and earn your place in that 125-year-old story.

The next major event is a mass huddle at the top of Ben Nevis, check it out here.

Enjoy your Easter holiday – but not before you get involved………

  1. thomthetim,

I think in my heart of hearts, the scenario you depict is what may well develop. I have not wanted to believe, far less think, it. But there have now been too many occasions in the sevco saga when it should have gone out of business. Against all the rules, against justice, against any integrity you like, they are still fielding a team, which all media refer to as them. No matter what anyone may say to the contrary, no one in authority of any kind whatsoever in Scotland is going to let them die and put the rest of the country out of its misery.

I have all the time in the world for the likes of Auldheid, who have pursued the matter through the labyrinthine miasma that the establishment have put down to try and obfuscate reality. Ticketus, Whyte and, of course, Murray (David of that ilk) raising their heads above the parapet and taking over the reins will complete the process. Is Masterton the real eminence gris?

I reckon you won’t be far off the mark regarding Masterton.

    The name gives it away.

  4. In keeping with the theme of the article, the youth football club from which i take my CQN name (Giffnock Soccer Centre) are trying to raise fund for a new 3G pitch and to support the Johari Foundation, which supports child education and promotes self-sustainability in Kenya (particularly in Kibera which, with 1 million inhabitants is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in the world.)

To this end we are selling raffle tickets on ( Hyperlink Code), with the prize being two tickets at the Sky Box at a Celtic home match, with full hospitality, courtesy of Lomond Audi

With Paul67’s permission, i hope to advertise this another once or twice between now and 19 April, when the draw is made.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. BSR, Parkhead, 67 heaven,

It is the regular CP attender that I feel genuinely sorry for.

For my own part, I am moving living far away from the Park, so regular attendance is not an issue for me.

I have also had 60 + happy years supporting the club, so I’m just being greedy.

Must cut this short, as my old mate Ard Macha has just walked in the door.

  6. Re. the Ben Nevis Huddle.

IF there are hundreds (thousands?) of Celtic fans together on the Ben will the polis have to be notified? Will there be horses and helicopters and Focus focusing on rabid Tim terrorists terrorising the innocent Ben nevis walkers that day? Will there be kettling or will we haqve to bring our own kettles? Will we be allowed banners or will banners be banned? Is the wearing of the Hoops not proscribed in general society? Will McAskill prtaise us or condemn us?

I think Sally demands to know (if there’s a Greigs nearby).

I would not be surprised if it turned out as you suggest, i.e another administration followed by a anothe takeover by Rangers men.

However in order to avoid the impact that would have on Celtic and other clubs as well as the integrity of the game, the SFA would have to be reformed not just personnel but in culture and attitude.

This would be the sine qua non for Celtic continuing to take part in Scottish football.

I mean if we were going to go under anyway why not make continuing participation conditional on such a reform?

Scottish football might think it needs Rangers but it definitely needs Celtic.

PS e mail me for a bit of accounts info.

  10. Whitedoghunch. I was in Berlin about 18 months ago and had lunch in the Reichstag building. Right at the very top in the dome. Apart from the photographic display going up, the food and service was excellent ( not cheap but not too bad) but the whole experience was terrific. Highly recommended but book before you go.

  11. So Celtic and Sevco will share the same kit sponsors next year – C&C Group, formerly Cantrell & Cochrane of Dublin – albeit wearing competing products from their ‘stable’ of ciders.

I wonder how much of this was always the C&C plan, how much of it was known at the time the Celtic announcement was made?

  12. As a regular attender at CP I don’t need sympathy from anyone. As I’ve said before, I supported the Hoops pre-PL and GB and will continue to support after both are long gone.

I agree with many of the views expressed on CQN about the state of our game (too many to list) but weakening or killing off Celtic is not a solution for me.

CQN Good Friday thought for the day…

From Nazareth He came. He said “Behold! I am the One!

Of whom the ancients spoke. I tell you I have come”

The promised Sacrificial Lamb, The Redeemer, The Messiah!

Foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and Isaiah

“I come to free the world of Sin, Your liberty to gain”

Spoken of so long ago, before the Saviour came.

They took Him at Gethsemane. He asked them “What is this?

I am a thief? For you come with swords, yet betray me with a kiss”

They took Him to the Elders; Pilate washed his hands and said

“I find no charge against this man” “Why do you want him dead”

The crowd just shouted all the more, “We want him crucified”

“We have no king but Caesar” “We think it’s time he died”

They stripped Him, they whipped Him, and they crowned His head with thorns

They sent Him out to meet His death. The reason He was born.

They laid a tree across His back, half-dead He made his way,

Stumbling, bleeding, to Golgotha. To die on Calvary.

Hung on a cross between two thieves, He prayed for me and YOU!

“Father, forgive them for my names’ sake, they know not what they do!”

He lifted up His eyes to God, they stood to mock and boast!

He cried out “Father, it is done!” and offered up the ghost.

The sky grew dark as midnight! The veil was torn in two!

The Gates of Heaven opened wide! The centurion, He knew!

That God’s own Son had died that day. His time here now was past.

He died so that we might live. He freed us all at last!

In three days time the tomb was bare. The stone was rolled away!

“The One you seek” The Angel said “He is Risen, Gone away”

Then he was right there with them, they tried to run and hide.

He showed the nail-marks on His hands, where a sword had pierced His side.

“I go now to the Father; stay here! You will have power!

Then spread the news across the world. I return at the appointed hour.

Apologies if I’ve picked you up wrong here but for me, at least, the march on 6 April is not about continuing with a semblance of a game but about civil rights. The response of the police to the GB assembling and marching was shocking and intemperate; the absence of a licence notwithstanding. It was shameful and the fact that they were Celtic supporters is completely irrelevant to me. That this happened in my city is disgraceful. I can only speak for myself but my attendance at the rally will be about civil rights and not the future of Scottish football. I don’t see the connection between Scottish football establishment’s cheating and the march. But probably it’s only me.

Question for the Pub (well, maybe not the Louden Tavern): How many of the 11 founder members of the Scottish League (1890) are still in existence?

Answer: only four – Celtic, Dumbarton, Hearts and St. Mirren.

The other founder members who have fallen by the wayside are: Abercorn, Cambuslang, Cowlairs, Rangers, Renton, Third Lanark, Vale of Leven.

One factor that would come out if the scenario painted were to occur would be how was it possible for the SFA to grant a club that went into liquidation a licence if it then enters administration within 2 years?

Two insolvency events on a trot would be traumatic to the The Rangers support who would be looking for heads on a plate, supported by their msm laptop loyal.

I seriously doubt if even the SFA could withstand such an event and it is interesting that in addition to the exceptional dispensation clause, the SFA have introduced a new level of transparency which allows them to make public certain financial information provided by clubs that was always kept confidential before.

This is because they no longer trust clubs to be honest in what they submit (and why should they after Rangers lied to them for 10 years)so if a licence is granted the public will have some inkling on which basis it was granted.

The SFA took a punt on granting a licence last season, they are going to have to do so again but this time have actual expenditure v income data to examine as opposed to what can only have been CG’s best estimates.

Its going to be an interesting couple of months.

Is STV just a Sevco podium or what? All the sports Sevco PR gets up my nose. Hence I turn off. However they don’t KNOW I turned off…
