Good luck to Ange having to pick a strongest 11

Celtic certainly didn’t have the fluidity we saw at times last season, but they comfortably got the defence of their title underway against Aberdeen yesterday.  The visitors, playing their fifth competitive game of the season, did a decent job of denying Celtic space inside the box, but could scarcely construct an attack worthy of the name at any point during the game.

Earlier in the summer we discussed the need for a central defender to break through the lines, as Kristoffer Ajer did so effectively.  On one notably occasion in the second half, Stephen Welsh carried the ball forward 30 yards, causing havoc in the Aberdeen midfield.  We are going to face a lot of packed defences this season, overloading with a ball-carrying centre half is an important tool to assist.

Stephen’s more important contribution came when he headed home from a corner in the third minute.  He remains our most effective aerial target, as long as Christopher Jullien is not in the line-up.

After that promising start, the expected avalanche did not materialise.  Passing was too wayward.  Threat levels increased when Giorgios Giakoumakis, David Turnbull and Liel Abada replaced Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda.  The departing three had been unable to make a telling contribution to events.

Delighted with the win; the passing will improve.  Good luck to Ange having to pick a strongest 11.

As I understand it the only circumstance for the game not to be moved to Sunday would be if there was a clash of games in Europe on Thursday night from teams in the same city. This would mean an earlier day that week could be utilised for one of the fixtures involving the lower placed domestically.

So it seems if hearts draw a team from a city with a higher rated team in Europa action that might then they may play on Tuesday and then our game won’t be shifted. Apparently ???

  2. Rest in Peace John Yogi Hughes a true Celtic legend. Thoughts and prayers and condolences for his family. 🙏

RIP The original Yogi Bear 🐻

A true Celtic legend that even starred on CQN

  5. Sad news about big Yogi. Saw him play a few times towards the end of his Celtic career in what was a great team. RIP big man – you will be missed by many.

  6. Sad news that John Hughes has died. He scored in my first game at Celtic park a 5 0 win over St. Mirren in December 1968.

May his soul rest in peace and may his family take some consolation from the love of the Celtic family.

  7. R.I.P Yogi Hughes

May perpetual light shine upon you and May your family know they will never walk alone.

  8. Feared the worst when his family announced John was gravely ill, but as always in the case of great Celtic men, hoped for the best. Alas it was not to be. No player like him then or since in the Hoops, and to think we had Jimmy on the right and John on the left, who between them scored over 300 goals for Celtic at a time of our great Renaissance under Jock Stein. No words will ever match what that generation of footballers brought to Celtic, to the supporters. To Us.

God Bless John Hughes, for every game you played. The one, the original, the only Yogi Bear.

    Condolences to family and friends

    RIP John

That would certainly explain why the league game hasn’t been moved yet.

    Cheers.

  10. Was just composing the results post when news reached me of the death of John Yogi Hughes. RIP Yogi. I hope it’s not seen as insensitive to still put out the following…..

*** SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2022-23 ***

RESULTS FROM GAME #1 – CELTIC 2 ABERDEEN 0 (WELSH, JOTA)

A quite brilliant atmosphere in the ground pre-match with everyone remembering to bring their singing voices and an absolutely fantastic TIFO to welcome Scotland’s Champions onto the pitch. And we were all set for the new season.

And what a start with us a goal up within 4 minutes. Lots of good inter-passing and movement followed but I felt we were just overdoing it a bit and could have been a bit more direct. And whilst it remained 1-0 well into the 2nd half there was always the possibility of an undeserved Aberdeen equaliser. But Jota had other ideas with a strike that was netbound from the moment it left his foot – I should know, I was right behind it, albeit 140 yards away!

And with perfect timing as soon as we went 2 goals up we sang “Top of the league looking down on the Sevco…” (well that’s what I sang, anyway).

And so to the voting and what a fantastic response for our first competitive game of the season – a huge thank you to the 82 who took the time to vote. Those votes have now been counted and it was interesting to see that all but one of our outfield starters caught your eye. And the only one scoring nil – poor wee Kyogo!

The total votes cast for each player (with my own choices asterisked) are as follows –

    Hart: 0

    Juranovic*: 5

    Carter-Vickers: 14

    Welsh*: 56

    Taylor: 49

    McGregor: 12

    Hatate*: 15

    O’Riley: 30

    Jota: 61

    Kyogo: 0

    Maeda: 2

    Turnbull: 1

    Abada: 0

    Giakoumakis: 1

    Ralston: 0

    Mooy: 0

So, the top 5 players receiving POINTS for the game against Aberdeen are –

    Jota – 5 pts

    Welsh – 4 pts

    Taylor – 3 pts

    O’Riley – 2 pts

    Carter-Vickers – 1 pt

We now have 5 more sleeps to wait until our next game away against Ross County. It’s obviously more of a challenge to find a way of watching that game in full but hopefully enough of us are able to do so to make next week’s voting meaningful – remember, spread the word, anyone can vote after any game and join in at any time – just keep a note of the email address – sencelpoty@gmail.com

    Hail Hail!

  11. So sorry to hear the sad news about “The Bear”John Yogi Hughes.

I remember being in the jungle ,Yogi was playing outside left ,he was having one of them games when nothing went right,he was getting belters from the jungle, when he went on one of his crazy runs ending with him scoring a superb goal.Back he came to his position with his head down ,then we all started Feed the Bear,he looked across with the biggest smile you have ever seen.

    What a player ,

Deserved to be known as a Lion .

    RIP Yogi.

    RIP John YOGI Hughes .

One of my earliest memories from Celtic Park was Yogi demolishing Aberdeen on an ice rink of a pitch wearing sannies (sandshoes , for the non Glaswegians ) . Before the days of undersoil heating and before the days when no one wore anything but studded boots .

He invented dancing on ice long before the TV ever thought of it .

  13. Really sorry to hear the sad news about John Hughes. I was at school with his son Martin, I’ll never forget the look on my older brothers face when I told him I’d seen his hero Yogi at parents night. Sincerest condolences to the Hughes family.

  14. Sad day today. First time I remember seeing Yogi was a game at Cliftonhill where he was playing against a St Pat’s teachers select. Then after summer he was playing in a pre season A team v reserves game. My failing memory says he played at centre forward in a friendly against Sparta Rotterdam in 1959 or 1960 where we were treated to a motor cycle display at half time. I believe he scored then.

Hopefully the likes of Tontine Tim will have more accurate info.

Rest In Peace Yogi and thank you for the pleasure and many happy memories you gave us.

Latest update on the POTY thing – we now have a wonderful 77 entries and there’s still almost 4 hours to go.

One issue that I have realised – and it was the same last time around – is that the competition is a bit unfair on our goalkeepers. Given that we dominate most games we play, certainly domestically, then even when our goalie is flawless in the sense of no material mistakes and a clean sheet, often they don’t get a single vote.

Maybe there’s an argument that there should be some recognition for keeping a clean sheet? But how I would factor that in in terms of points – no idea!!

Keep the votes coming (and any suggestions on recognising our goalies’ performances!) to sencelpoty@gmail.com

    ————

Dang. Logged on 43 minutes too late to contribute to this weeks votes.

Only way of getting keepers in the equation is for each voter to give a score for every player. But that would be an exponential increase for you.

  16. Sad to hear about Big Yogi, thoughts and prayers with the family.

  17. Whoops, VAR has intervened to ask me to take another look at the scoring charts (actually, credit where credit’s due it was Call Me Gerry on Sentinel Celts). CCV’s 1 point has been taken from him and awarded to Reo Hatate. Schoolboy error by Jobo in Week 1, d’oh!!

    Here’s the amended summary –

“…So, the top 5 players receiving POINTS for the game against Aberdeen are –

    Jota – 5 pts

    Welsh – 4 pts

    Taylor – 3 pts

    Hatate – 1 pt”

GLENDALYSTONSILS. I was at that game as well and the Big Yin ran rings round the sheep defence.

If I recall correctly the pitch was white so the match was played with an orange ball.

Yogi was a one off and a true legend.

    May he rest in peace.

Re MOTM votes & keeper effect

    Personally, I’d leave as is.

Granted, a good defensive performance by the outfield players can adversely lower the votes for a keeper if he hardly touches the ball. Do I see where your coming from.

Though it could be said that in those instances, the outfield players are more deserving of the votes (as seen by the votes for CCV & Welsh in particular) as they’ve contributed to the keeper being untroubled.

Also, I’d vote for the keeper if he made sufficient saved that stopped us dropping points in close games.

‘GG. That game was also memorable for the fact that the Sparta goalie wore Harry Potter style specs throughout the match.

  21. Memory of Big Yogi

Scotland versus England at Hampden park. Think we had 5 players in the team with Alan Gilzean named as centre forward. (Teams were named on Fridays in they days)

Before heading to the game we backed 4 Celts to score, didnae think the 5th, Faither, would take a penalty.

    Gilzean injured on Saturday morning?

Replaced in team by no other (and goalscorer)

    John “Yogi” Hughes.

    Lesson, don’t gamble on football

R.I.P.John Hughes. Thanks for being a Celt
