Good SPFL fixtures for Celtic’s European qualifiers

59

The SPFL computer has pitched Celtic against Hamilton Accies, at home, in the middle of what could be our Champions League play-off tie.  The Lanarkshire club visit Celtic Park on 25 August, while the play-off games are due to take place on 21/22 and 28/29 August.

There is a trip to Tynecastle in the middle of the previous Champions League qualification round, while we open at home to Livingston a week earlier.

Sending Livingston to watch the Champions lift their trophy before starting life in the top flight is a huge challenge for the newly promoted club.  Celtic, and the occasion, should be sufficient to overwhelm them.  Look out for re-runs of last season’s 4-0 defeat to Hearts to add some spice to our Tynecastle trip, but that venue has been more than generous to us in recent years.  You could scarecely handpick a more suitable opponent in the middle of the play-off round than Accies.

Brendan Rodgers will surely be satisfied with the games during this crucial period of the season, when priorities lie in Europe.  I think we are happy with this.

“)SCOTLAND’S top two sides will meet for pthe first time at Celtic Park at the end of September. Brendan Rodgers’ side will play host to Aberdeen, who have finished second in the Ladbrokes Premiership for the past four seasons, on September 29.

The second clash will be at Pittodrie on Boxing Day, while Derek McInnes’ side return to Glasgow on March 9, 2019 for the third game. The fourth league meeting between the sides will come after the split.

Last season, Celtic won three of the league meetings, scoring eight goals without reply, while Aberdeen won 1-0 at Celtic Park in the final game of the season.

Celtic kick off their Premiership campaign with a home game against Livingston on August 4, while Aberdeen will play host to Rangers the same weekend.”

  10. Edouard signed.

CELTIC Football Club is delighted to announce that it has signed striker Odsonne Edouard from French champions, Paris Saint-Germain, on a four-year deal in what is the biggest transfer in Celtic’s history.

The 20-year-old impressed during his season-long loan at Celtic Park last season, scoring 11 goals in 29 appearances as Brendan Rodgers’ side secured a historic Double Treble.

Among his highlights was a debut goal against Hamilton Accies, a hat-trick against Motherwell in a 5-1 win, a stunning strike to give a 10-man Celtic side a 3-2 win over Rangers at Ibrox and a double in a 5-0 demolition derby at Paradise on the day the Hoops secured their seventh successive Premiership title.

Odsonne signed a professional contract with Paris Saint-Germain in 2016 and he has been capped for the French National teams at under-17, under-18 and under-19 levels.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website today, Odsonne said: “From the moment I walked into Celtic, the club has felt like home to me. I have been made to feel so welcome by everyone at the club and our fans have given me such brilliant support.

“Celtic is one of the world’s great football clubs and I was desperate to make my move permanent. The scenes from May when we achieved such a historic Double Treble and made the city come alive are still very fresh in our memories.

“To see our fans so happy is the reason you play football and now we want to do everything we can to bring our great supporters even more success.”

Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers added: “We are delighted to make such an important signing. Odsonne is one of the best young players I have worked with and one of the best in Europe.

“Our fans saw exactly what he is capable of last season and we look forward to working with him again as we look to build on the tremendous success we achieved last year. I am sure he will be a big player again for us this season.”

Celtic Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, said: “The signing of Odsonne from Paris Saint-Germain demonstrates our absolute commitment to ensuring we give our fans a club they can be proud of.

“After the club delivered unprecedented, historic success last year, we thank our fans sincerely for the magnificent support they have already shown to the club as we look ahead to the coming season. As ever, we will do all we can to bring our fans the success which this support deserves. We are delighted to welcome Odsonne to Celtic and we know our fans will give him their usual magnificent support.”
