GORDON ‘GOOD ENOUGH’ FOR SCOTLAND

CRAIG GORDON is still good enough to be Scotland’s No.1 international keeper, according to Celtic boss Neil Lennon.

The 37-year-old shotstopper has made only six first-team club appearances this season since the return of Fraser Forster on loan from Southampton until the end of the season.

Gordon, who is out of contract in June, is desperate for top-flight game-time to catch the eye of Scots gaffer Steve Clarke before the crucial Euro 2020 semi-final against Israel at Hampden on March 26.

The nation has the opportunity of reaching a first major tournament since Craig Brown led them to the World Cup Finals to France in 1998.

Hearts were linked with a move for their former netminder in the January transfer window, but it was made clear he was too important to the champions to be allowed to move on.

Hoops gaffer Lennon, speaking to the Sunday Mail, said: “Craig Gordon is certainly good enough to be in the Scotland squad.

“Even if he’s not playing for us every week, that would be my opinion. I see him every day, he’s an outstanding trainer and outstanding professional. Whether he’s playing regularly or not, he’s still more than good enough to be in the squad.

“It was an awkward decision for us – from the club’s point of view we don’t want to let him go, but from a human side I can totally understand where he’s coming from at the minute.

“The club’s stance is we want him here.

“It’s hard for a keeper, it’s an individual position, I understand where he’s coming from. But he’s training great and he looks great, though Fraser is our No.1.”
