GORDON MAKES CASE FOR THE DEFENCE

CRAIG GORDON praised his defence for their “fantastic” efforts to make sure the keeper kept another clean sheet against Qarabag.

The Scottish international star said: “We had a lot of things to contend with and everyone gave 100 per cent. It was a night for a battle rather than great football.
“We can look at each other and know that everyone is fighting for the cause.

“Our defensive display was pretty good. It was solid and we were in control most of the time.

“We knew we would have to defend well. The guys in front of me were absolutely fantastic. We were deeper than we normally are. I had one save and another in the second half.

“I have got to be happy with the boys in front of me. They really battled and threw themselves in front of everything.”

Gordon played his part with a brilliant flying save to deny Richard Almeida an equaliser in the tie, diving to his right to push away the explosive 25-yard effort.

He said: “It was a good save. I didn’t have loads to do so that was my biggest moment. It was good to play a part.

“I saw the ball coming, it didn’t come through any bodies, so that helped. I had good reaction time and I managed to get my hand to it.”

Celtic will go into the draw in Nyon tomorrow knowing they will avoid the super clubs from the big leagues.

And Gordon insisted they will go into the ties with the confidence of an unbeaten start to the season and only one goal conceded in 360 minutes of European football.

He added: “Regardless of who we will play, we believe we can find a way to get through.”
