‘GORDON WILL BE CELTIC’S BEST SIGNING,’ RODGERS

CELTIC boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted extending Craig Gordon’s deal would be the club’s best signing.

The Scotland international goalkeeper had his seventh shut-out in the last eight outings as the Hoops overcame Aberdeen 1-0 at Parkhead last night.

A 57th-minute header from Dedryck Boyata was enough to separate the teams and push the champions a massive 25 points clear at the top of the Premiership as they extended their unbeaten domestic run to an astonishing 28 games.

Chelsea wanted the 34-year-old shotstopper in the January transfer window, but Rodgers was adamant Gordon was going nowhere.

The club have a year’s option on his contract which is due to expire in the summer. However, a longer and better deal is in the offing.

Rodgers said: “It was difficult for Craig because I don’t think he is built for the stress. He is a big guy who is calm and laid back and it probably got on his nerves.

“But I have reassured him that he is an absolutely massive part of what I’m doing here.

“You see the level of his game, his composure, his quality – everything. And I’m very hopeful that soon we will tie him down for longer because he is a huge player in relation to how I want my team to operate.

“That will be our best signing once that gets done.”
