The Scotland shotstopper returned to the side last week to make his debut in the group stages of the Champions League after the Dutchman sustained a chest strain while losing a 40-yard goal in the 6-1 win over Kilmarnock at Parkhead. De Vries was replaced at half time in that match by Brendan Rodgers who had clearly made a decision that Gordon would start in the next match.
Gordon played in the 3-3 draw against Manchester City and, with the crucial double-header looming against Borussia Monchengladbach as well as the forthcoming Betfred League Cup semi-final, he is in no mood to step down.
He said: “There is no bigger incentive to stay in the team than the thought of playing regular Champions League football.
“It is international week now and all I want is to try and stay in.
“I have a lot of respect for the manager and whatever happens is his decision. We have a good relationship, but like any player, I want to be out there.
“However, it has been a good few weeks and, hopefully, I will get back to Celtic on the back of strong international results and we can take it from there.”
Gordon’s omission from the team for a few weeks may actually work in Celtic’s favour. As far as the support is concerned his absence made our hearts grow fonder and with a return of confidence and form, Craig Gordon could be a key player for Celtic as Brendan Rodgers’ first season in charge progresses.
