Great champions raise the stakes for everyone

180

Cynicism for international football, which I have plenty of, did not survive the festival we were treated to yesterday.  Switzerland scoring three before eliminating World Champions on penalties is a feat for the ages.  That it fell to the game’s most prodigious prodigy, Kylian Mbappe, to miss the decisive penalty and turn France Miserables, could have been scripted by Victor Hugo himself.

Croatia’s miracle ran out of steam in extra time against Spain, Europe’s other footballing giant of recent times.  They were no less enthralling than the Swiss.  The difficult side of the draw lived up to its reputation.

Football is the game we love because of the drama and excitement good competition generates.  League rosters everywhere are full of fixtures with little consequence.  Lose and you have a chance to recover.  Celtic’s quadruple treble raised the excitement bar in Scottish football.  For aspiring teams, every League Cup game was a must-win as it presented a viable chance to win silverware.

Great champions raise the stakes for everyone.  When they lose, the sense of achievement the likes of Ross County, who were first to eliminate Celtic from a competition, and Switzerland last night, achieve what was thought barely possible.  We need to get back to the top of the pile.

Lustig still gravitating inside with no awareness of man behind him. Raheem Sterling will roast him alive if Sweden get through this.

Lustig, or Kenny,or Ralston, or Frimpong, or El Hamed, or Bauer……he’s still not been replaced…

  4. The high-watermark for independence was in 2014 when the grotesque lie about oil-revenue was spun in the ‘thick’ White Paper and every minute up to polling day. It didn’t work!!!!

There is now, never was, a credible and coherent economic case for independence, if there was the SNPcult would be shouting it from the rooftops & plastering it on every billboard that their slush-fund could buy.

The SNPcult were gubbed in 2014 and will be again by a bigger margin, if there is another indyref – “it’s the economy stupid”.

England winning the Euros will have no bearing whatsoever, it’s one of the most ludicrous suggestions I have ever heard….and I have heard plenty from the cult.

If Sturgeon said the world was flat, some would defend her, even though there was continuous broadcast showing the planet from the International Space Station ……and if by some quirk of fate the Ibrox legions performed a volte-face and started supporting the SNPcult – many of the ‘converts’ from our side would be trampled in the stampede to vote against them.

germany are changing and they will come back stronger.

Having lived in England for 5 years i am content for the ordinary england supporter to cheer their own country, why wouldnt they?

    But

i am glad Raheem Sterling scored,it splits the cranium of the racism and the racists in the england support who give him hell.GIRUT.

FB- he’s first choice right back for Sweden in the Euros, but you’re saying he couldn’t have done a job for Celtic in the last couple of seasons? Open your eyes, and look at the rubbish we have threw money at replacing him, sometimes it’s good to admit you were wrong, the abuse the guy got on here was ridiculous. HH

“It is completely without context of course. BR had a group with City, Barca, PSG and Bayern. I doubt any Celtic team would have made it out of those groups. So context is important.”

    ————————-

    Completely without context???

Don’t think so. Every CL group has a frst second third and fourth seed. Once you start saying PSG and MAn CIty were superior to Barca and Benfica or AC Milan etc; you are entering “If your auntie had testes territory”.

It was a moot point anyway as Brendan finished 4th, 3rd (with 5 defeats) and FTQ in his 3 CL campaigns. Even in his Europa Group, he did not equal Lenny’s achievement, unless you are going to argue that Salzburg, Lepzig and Rosenborg were tougher than Lazio, Rennes and Copenhagen.

Record Books do not take context into account. They will continue to show that MON, WGS and NFL surpassed BR’s Euro achievements.

One real opportunistic money grab from the plc.

In the old days only 53,000 season books would be sold , so that 7,000 seats could be allocated to the huns when they came.

With the kids specials “opt out” book set at £50, or £129 if the kid opted in for huns games.

when a new version turns up , plc is happy to go back to the old pricing structure.

that first game as thems was the day to declare we were playing a new club, we didnt, and the rest is just shameful to get us to where we are today.

    Warburton.

    Pedro.

We should have won 9 trebles.

The success we achieved is despite of Lawwell and not due to Lawwell.

He has been a disastrous appointment and has cost our club hundreds of millions in lost champions league income.

He created a new verb in the English language. To tarpaulin. He tarpaulined half the stadium.

He was very successful in what he set out to do. He enriched himself.

“… Trebles were continued and equalled by Neil Lennon.

Is clearly not correct for two good reasons, trebles were not continued when we failed to win a single trophy last season.

Lenny did not equal BR’s record on Trophies or trebles… It is an illogical statement

Add to that BR’s 100% record and invincible season and it sounds like you’re talking through your hat.”

    ——————————

Trebles WERE continued and equalled. Neil won the 2019//20 treble; it was completed in December 2020- i.e. in the midst of last season. Do you seriously think I was claiming that last season was a Treble one??? The Treble achievement was equalled by Neil in that year- he did what Brendan did to the domestic competition and he did it at a time when Sevco had an even stronger team than BR faced (using Auntie’s baws type arguments). Despite your best efforts to twist it, I never said that He had equalled Brendan’s NUMBER of trebles, but he did equal the chievement itself. Equally I never calimed that he had had an Invincible season or that he was as good a manager; again I repeat , I merely stated that he equalled all BR’s high points apart from Invincible season and he got further in Europe than BR did.

    —————————————-

“BR showed that “i) Celtic could achieve success at a much higher level”.

It was clearly in the context of the Peter Lawwell era as it was then, it was never comparing one manager with another*. It was used as an example to counter the argument of the time that we could not invest in the squad as it was too risky and the expectation management by the PLC.

Brendan Rodgers proved that was nonsense and that by having a good manager, backroom staff and investing in the team, you could improve your performances, results, on field success and financial success. ”

    ——————————

I have to confess that I am not too clear as to what point(s) you are making here. It does not read clearly to me.

Apart from an Invincible season, and I will never diminish that achievement, what bar did he raise. He continued a winning league trend that NFL and RD started and was continued by NFL in his succssor season. That maintains a bar- not raises it. He won two trebles and contributed to a 3rd and that merits approcal but a raised bar?? Not in the understanding of most fans at CP.

We argue that it is in Europe that you show that you can raise Celtic’s profile. MON did it, WGS did it and NFL in a mixed group of results did it for one or two seasons of his tenure. Brendan raised no European bar with us as his record will always show, unfortunately.

The stuff on what he demonstrated on making a team without finance, I don’t understand at all- you’ll have to show your working there. I had thought that the argument was that BR showed us how to make money without spending it but that it was PL’s fault that “no” money was spent. I’d like to see a consistent line on this but fans weren’t going to flock to CP for evermore on the back of continued domestic Trebles, nice as they are. The demand is for European progress and BR knows steroid-funded Leicester will give him big enough bucks to make a fist at that, enough of a fist for him to bail out of there to one of the truly big clubs

  29. As an aside, a person who is in the know told me the waiting list got added to in big numbers as people started to hear of others not renewing.

    I suspected this would happen.

Old supporters and or new breed being replaced by people desperate to get themselves on the season book ladder (akin to property).
