Great champions raise the stakes for everyone

180

Cynicism for international football, which I have plenty of, did not survive the festival we were treated to yesterday.  Switzerland scoring three before eliminating World Champions on penalties is a feat for the ages.  That it fell to the game’s most prodigious prodigy, Kylian Mbappe, to miss the decisive penalty and turn France Miserables, could have been scripted by Victor Hugo himself.

Croatia’s miracle ran out of steam in extra time against Spain, Europe’s other footballing giant of recent times.  They were no less enthralling than the Swiss.  The difficult side of the draw lived up to its reputation.

Football is the game we love because of the drama and excitement good competition generates.  League rosters everywhere are full of fixtures with little consequence.  Lose and you have a chance to recover.  Celtic’s quadruple treble raised the excitement bar in Scottish football.  For aspiring teams, every League Cup game was a must-win as it presented a viable chance to win silverware.

Great champions raise the stakes for everyone.  When they lose, the sense of achievement the likes of Ross County, who were first to eliminate Celtic from a competition, and Switzerland last night, achieve what was thought barely possible.  We need to get back to the top of the pile.

You responded that tells the story of obsession…….

  2. Have we signed anyone yet?

    Still working hard?

No working hard enough for me!

  3. Reported(unofficially, admittedly) 48k season tickets sold. Excellent news 😊🍀

BelmontBrian welcome, are you a hun. Believe it or not that was a genuine tongue in mouth welcome in years gone past. I noticed that no one had responded to your entry. This site is a place where you will feel welcome. Many years ago I went home and then came back to New Zealand. I was welcomed onto this site by pablo who sent me music videos that he thought reflected my posts.😁. I have seen many posters come and go. Some, like me, have taken a lot from here, others have gone there own way. Anyway welcome to CQN. Paul67, even thought he is a unionist, is an amazing lad to keep this going. It does a lot of good. Post when you can, if anyone judges your post they don’t get what Paul67 created here. Hail Hail.

I’ve been to both and I stand by my view Hampden is the worst, remember it’s not long had it’s £50m revamp to turn it into a dump

Re: issue of happiness regarding ST sales.

I posted a comment yesterday on previous blog at 11:20 Tues 29/6 on this issue.

There are certain posters on here who lecture others about reducing complex questions to binary yes/no options.

I think this is one of them but will try not to lecture. I do not want to appear as conceited to think I should repeat the comment, and/or bore others.

I do think there is a case to be made for the Celtic supporter to have legitimate concerns going forward at the level of renewal, in terms of what it reveals about the mindset/attitude of the ordinary fan to the events of the last 10 years.

I also accept that, for a business largely dependent on ST renewal, and certainly to a far higher degree that those European clubs who we aspire to compete with, a high level of renewal is financially important.

As I said however I do not think it’s a binary question/answer, and I think your comments are either not taking this into account or, if they are, blinkered.

  8. squire danaher on

    And on the subject.

I would not be surprised to learn that the 48k renewals figure comprises those who have renewed along with the assumption that those 17k on the waiting list all take a ticket when offered.

    Squire Danaher –

The information my nephew was given by the ticket office after deadline day, while enquiring about his place on the waiting list, was that circa 5,000 season tickets were not renewed, which would tie in with 48,000 renewals.

Yes, the figure of 48k has been mentioned a few times, and been attributed to sources within.

I don’t doubt your nephew’s comments as he was told what he was told.

I would describe myself though as a seasoned Kerrydale-ologist and remain sceptical.

  13. Is the ST sales issue a yes or No type question?

    Answer Yes or No .

    Cheerio for now.

  14. Big Jimmy earlier,

I have to disagree with you. I though the Engurlund v Germany game was quite exciting ( Compared to the later Sweden v Ukraine game anyway )

I think that games with fans gives an enhanced viewing that games in empty grounds cannot achieve.

Sorry to hear that you weren’t keeping too well again. Don’t worry, the pubs will be restocked for when you are fit and ready. I tested some out for you last Saturday.

Get well soon big pal and hopefully we can have a swally in the near future.

  15. Former season ticket holder here. Haven’t held one for many years now, unfortunately. Had to give up and did so during a period of incredible success.

I understand the argument about not renewing this season. Though, personally, I would have renewed, were I able to.

In a completely unscientific fag packet test, I must know around 50 season ticket holders. I am aware of 5 who have not renewed.

I would except the overall rates to be similar.

    Again thanks

  17. I was told yesterday in the Ticket Office when I asked about the renewals that they were very healthy. Make of that what you will.

Hope they are as many as possible.

  18. celticforever on

Hopefully 48k have renewed but from past dealings with

the ticket office from before the Seville days up till now

I would never trust them as I have been lied to repeatedly

and also by JPT our liaison officer by phone and by e mail

    which I have kept.

    …………

No worries, we can agree to disagree. LOL.

A big part of me despises the continues habit of English Pundits etc…and how they go well over the Top when talking about many Engurland players being ” World Class” ?

Kane, Stones, Grealish, Tripper, and Big SLAB HEID…the defender from Man Utd…I cant even remember his name Blah Blah.

Last week on TV, Ian Wright described Trent Arnold as being the BEST crosser of a Ball in the WORLD !

World Class to me means……PELE, MARADONA, JINKY, BOBBY MURDOCH, HENRIK, LUBO, Christano RONALDO, BECKENBAUR, MALDINI, MESSI, ZIDANE, CRUYFF etc…the current English players couldnt lace the boots of ANY of the above……IMHO.

I didnt rate Bobby Moore all that highly either…Why wasnt he ever signed by Big clubs like Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc ?

The ONLY English player that I would ever rate as being ” World Class” was/is Bobby Charlton….Geoff Hurst got a Knighthood for scoring TWO Goals…one of which that should have been disallowed, as “some people were on the Pitch”…ADMITTED Kenneth Wolstenhome the English commentator.

I say ” Two Goals” because everybody and their Dug KNOWS that Hursts 2nd “Goal” was NEVER over the line either…so he only scored ONE….and he gets a Feckin Knighthood ?

I hope the Ukraine ROAST the Engurland Mob in Rome on Saturday ?

    LOL.

    HH Mate.

I am still hopeful that some of us on here will be meeting for a Bevvy on Friday 16th July from around 2pm onwards…in my local Pub ?

  20. GREENPINATA on 30TH JUNE 2021 10:36 AM

    …………

Not forgetting others like BEST, GARRINCHA. PLATINI, LENNOX,AULD,GEMMELL, McGRORY,McBRIDE, ZICO, GERD MULLER, PIRLO, EUSEBIO, DALGLISH, KEMPES and many others who were IMHO…World Class.

    HH Mate.

  21. GREEN PINATA…

SOCRATES of BRAZIL in the 190’s…now he was also World Class despite being a chain smoker…80/100 fags a Day ?

    Earlier…Engurlands ” SLAB HEID”…is Harry McGuire….World Class ?…..more like a world Class DOO HEID !

    HH.
