Great contracts can sink a manager, Acceptable Use Policy

392

There was a time not so long ago when Jackie McNamara was the next big thing in football management. His fall from a pedestal at Dundee United to inglorious resignation this morning at York City came swiftly, precipitated by the loss of three players to Celtic in 2015.

Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci were brought to Celtic last year by Ronny Deila. Their departure precipitated United’s fall from competitive a SPL club to relegation candidates a few months into last season, costing Jackie his job in October.

As with a lot in football, there’s more Magic Circle than centre circle going on. What you see happen with players distracts the eye from what’s going on behind the scenes. In April 2015 Dundee United went so far as to issue a statement confirming bonuses were payable to their manager on recent transfers. A manager’s contract is none of our business, it’s exceptional that it was made so, but this gives us an insight into what was going on between the McNamara and United at the time.

Jackie was finished at United from that moment, not that he was blameless. In a few years he took a club brimming with potential and put it on a path to relegation. They will remember him at York City as an unmitigated failure, with few redeeming features.

Resentment brewed at United in the months between Armstrong and Mackay-Steven leaving, and that April statement. He should have left at the time, and should only have made trips to York as a tourist (go, it’s a great city).

His early work at Partick Thistle and United marked him out, but his choice of mentors and collaborators didn’t do him any favours. That United contract worked for him on paper, but it was a burden on his career.  He’ll be lucky to pick up as high a profile a job as Thistle or United, which is a pity, as he’s a better manager than his CV currently suggests.

I’m part of a group, as is JF, who are trying to get a permanent memorial to the victims of An Gorta Mor built in Glasgow. The arrangement doesn’t involve either the Trust or Celtic. However, the Trust are in full support of it and Celtic have been contacted and are aware of it.

sad news it hasn’t worked out for jackie mac – he was great for us at a time when the consequences of cheating hadn’t quite hit rangers (they used to play in the spfl).

something went wrong for him big time – his midfield players lost it against us last season when they could have really pushed us with a bit of composure – unlike jackie who played strong all the time

In my opinion (which is no more or less based in fact than any other) his advisors have been pressuring the coaches about him being ready for a step-up and the coaches have proved to him/them that he’s not ready.

A bit hard for Jackie Mac to steady the ship after losing arguably his 3 best players.

So you can say that Celtic played a part in his downfall.

Maybe in retrospect it was a bit short sighted of us to take all three in that short period:

    – Nadir Ciftci: seemed like a panic measure by Ronnie at the time to bring in a “proven SPL striker”. It didn’t and hasn’t worked out (still on the bookes – on loan?).

    – Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong: something of a job lot for us, probably at a bargain price, but it ripped the heart out of Dun. Unt.

Even Stuart and even more so GMS will find it difficult to fit into Brendan’s overall plan. Both still on the books with only Stu getting game time and the wee man kicking his heels.

Still, the reality is that the life and time of a Fitba manager can be hard and unforgiving.

Just look at Gordon Strachan: he was the universal choice to be Scotland manager a year ago. Tomorrow, his head is on the chopping bock for anything other than 3pts…

Anyone know when the Celtic Board and the Celtic Trust will officially announce the construction of the An Gorta Mor memorial at Celtic Park?

    _________________________________________________

I was reliably informed yesterday that there are 2 sites currently being discussed at the moment as possible sites for the An Gorta Mor memorial at this time; neither is at Celtic Park.

It would be, I think, inappropriate for me to name them just now. I have a personal preference, but I think both would meet with the approval of Celtic fans and the Irish community.

  20. TURKEYBHOY,

I take your point about the solicitors name, but at the time I didn’t know his middle name, and I have came across numerous Tims called William.

I can also point to a guy that I knew and worked with many years ago who had one of the most Tim like Catholic names ever including his middle name.

This guy had King billy tattoos etc etc all over his arms !

In fact my name ( including my unusual middle name) would have me tagged as a Hun, to anyone who doesn’t know me !

Anyway I only posted about this solicitor to advise that on NO ACCOUNT whatsoever would I recommend him to anyone !
