Great contracts can sink a manager, Acceptable Use Policy

392

There was a time not so long ago when Jackie McNamara was the next big thing in football management. His fall from a pedestal at Dundee United to inglorious resignation this morning at York City came swiftly, precipitated by the loss of three players to Celtic in 2015.

Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci were brought to Celtic last year by Ronny Deila. Their departure precipitated United’s fall from competitive a SPL club to relegation candidates a few months into last season, costing Jackie his job in October.

As with a lot in football, there’s more Magic Circle than centre circle going on. What you see happen with players distracts the eye from what’s going on behind the scenes. In April 2015 Dundee United went so far as to issue a statement confirming bonuses were payable to their manager on recent transfers. A manager’s contract is none of our business, it’s exceptional that it was made so, but this gives us an insight into what was going on between the McNamara and United at the time.

Jackie was finished at United from that moment, not that he was blameless. In a few years he took a club brimming with potential and put it on a path to relegation. They will remember him at York City as an unmitigated failure, with few redeeming features.

Resentment brewed at United in the months between Armstrong and Mackay-Steven leaving, and that April statement. He should have left at the time, and should only have made trips to York as a tourist (go, it’s a great city).

His early work at Partick Thistle and United marked him out, but his choice of mentors and collaborators didn’t do him any favours. That United contract worked for him on paper, but it was a burden on his career.  He’ll be lucky to pick up as high a profile a job as Thistle or United, which is a pity, as he’s a better manager than his CV currently suggests.

CQN Acceptable Use Policy

What did the legal eagle do to you??

You can’t put that up and then not spill on the transgression(s)!

Big Nans website is a great read………..

  2. I once listened to a speech on The Who,fishtail parkas,The Jam,Quadrophenia and Scooters by a mod orator.

  3. Big Jimmy,

Personally I couldn’t give a monkeys about the name of a solicitor, as long as he / she was good. ( And got me off or won things for me )

I would especially like a Lou Pohl or a Misty Meanor.

Ps : I’m in no way demeaning your solicitor experience.

  4. Fair play on tackling the bad language on CQN. It’s hardly an epidemic but it’s one of those things that creeps in and becomes the norm.

Threats and abusive language have no place either.

If they had those rules on FF or RM they’d be closed in an instant. It’s like they have compulsory swearing and threats.

  6. I think another reason for the introduction of moderators again is the fact that some folk(s)

……….. are patently attempting to introduce topics that could expose This Dear Green Place to

ridicule, legal constraint and worse………..at the same time lowering the tone and blunting the sharpness it has become associated with.

It has always been a good read and a good laugh.

My own view is that they are at it.

  8. Thanks to VFR’s advice and hospitality, I can highly recommend Coia’s café, near Celtic Park. Great food, service and hospitality, not to mention Tim friendly.

However……..the fans’ café, beside the superstore, must be built. Build it and they will come. The owners of Coia’s would be ideal candidates to run it.

Was someone tipped off about a cash flow crisis.

    To paraphrase somebody famous.

To lose one football club is careless.

To lose a second football says you had rubbish schooling

    Or something like that.

  11. I see that that most dreadful of Managers, Ronny Deila ( Only two titles and one League Cup in two years) is reportedly in the running for the Manager`s job of the Norwegian National side. Obviously the Norwegiann FA don`t know as much about football management as do the plumbers and painters, lorry drivers and butchers and many others on the streets and in the pubs of Scotland.

  13. Re Jackie Mac and Dundee Utd’s fall from grace. They also lost Cierzniak (GK) Fojut (CH) as well as GMS SA and NC. Basically the spine of the team. Add to that the greatest prospect ever :-) Ryan Gould!

I don’t think any team could survive such a loss of 1st pick players in such a short space of time.

  18. To non believers…..

The aroma in Cellinos wins over Coias.

Though it’s not as fantastic as it used to be before the refurbishment!

  20. Oh well, listening to Clyde for a wee while, bfdj sowing the seeds of Bartons departure, it’s so in your face what the Huns are up to and they could get away with it up here.

Now Barton has brought his own advisers in, he might win his case but he won’t see a penny from the monkeys.

  21. This one will not trouble the new Mods, are they like the old Mods?

Anyway spent a frustrating hour today trying to buy a ticket online after negotiating the slow site, was kicked off because I tried to buy a seat in the only available lower sections. I needed to buy a parents and child ticket or head up to the dizzy heights.

I don’t like the high seats, I do get a sort of sea sickness when sat up in the north

So, I will wander in on Saturday and take my chances from the supporters who may have a spare.

I am off to Gatwick very early tomorrow morning and not back till Thursday, if any kind hearts can offer me a spare ticket at face value, let me know.

I live just off Duke St and work in Alexandra Parade (a long commute, I know) but to me, Coias wins hands down. If you are a wine buff, you’ll get great wine in Coias. There are 2 “sommeliers” who advise Freddo and both know their stuff!

Was the rendez vous cafe at the junction of Duke and Sword streets not run by the Coia’s also?

The ice cream and ice cream drinks sold in the Rendezvous cafe were magnificent.

In the West End of Glasgow , the University Cafe on Byres Road is worth a visit. Their chippie is next door and the chips you get in the cafe are straight out of the chippie fryer , magic.
