Great contracts can sink a manager, Acceptable Use Policy

392

There was a time not so long ago when Jackie McNamara was the next big thing in football management. His fall from a pedestal at Dundee United to inglorious resignation this morning at York City came swiftly, precipitated by the loss of three players to Celtic in 2015.

Stuart Armstrong, Gary Mackay-Steven and Nadir Ciftci were brought to Celtic last year by Ronny Deila. Their departure precipitated United’s fall from competitive a SPL club to relegation candidates a few months into last season, costing Jackie his job in October.

As with a lot in football, there’s more Magic Circle than centre circle going on. What you see happen with players distracts the eye from what’s going on behind the scenes. In April 2015 Dundee United went so far as to issue a statement confirming bonuses were payable to their manager on recent transfers. A manager’s contract is none of our business, it’s exceptional that it was made so, but this gives us an insight into what was going on between the McNamara and United at the time.

Jackie was finished at United from that moment, not that he was blameless. In a few years he took a club brimming with potential and put it on a path to relegation. They will remember him at York City as an unmitigated failure, with few redeeming features.

Resentment brewed at United in the months between Armstrong and Mackay-Steven leaving, and that April statement. He should have left at the time, and should only have made trips to York as a tourist (go, it’s a great city).

His early work at Partick Thistle and United marked him out, but his choice of mentors and collaborators didn’t do him any favours. That United contract worked for him on paper, but it was a burden on his career.  He’ll be lucky to pick up as high a profile a job as Thistle or United, which is a pity, as he’s a better manager than his CV currently suggests.

Are you suggesting something like the old national football league teams of old ?

I could see the likes of England gradually wanting to return to this as they continue on their downward slide with the realisation that they will never again win anything in Men’s international football.

The Scottish national team has always suffered from the fact that the whole SFA raison d’etre is a hun pension plan. WGS just doing a Mowbray till the next guy.

Basically don’t make comments that might be considered offensive. There is no written definition of what is or is not offensive – it’s up to the Mods/Rockers to decide whether or not someone may be offended by one of the comments you make. P.S. If you have a webcam attached to your PC, you are currently being filmed by BLog Unit for Reviewing Remarks (or BLURR for short)….

No mate I am suggesting that the current international teams cannot compete, in terms of football entertainment, with the larger (but financially doped) teams that play in the bigger leagues.

Remember 20 years ago when the World Cup would show fantastic skills and squads filled with talent you could not see at league level, ie the Germans, Brazilians, Italians etc.

It has switched 180 degrees now.

International team can never compete with the talent the likes of Barca and Real Madrid can put together (and Scottish Football with the teams that Celtic can put together, although not financially doped we are certainly gaining financial and sporting steroids from the Champions League to out muscle the rest of the SPL)

International football has to find a way to compete with Champions League football and it cant in its current format. So the TV companies WILL find a way to make it compete as the financials are too great to ignore.

  12. International football is dead to me.

Dead boring. Just can’t get a buzz about it these days.

I wish Celtic would create a pre-season competition instead of waiting for an invite. Invite previous winners of Big Cup and create our own mini tournament. The Celtic Cup up for grabs at end of it. Don’t think it would be difficult getting a sponsor.

Let the teams sample the Celtic Park atmosphere while it still means something internationally.

Where possible invite the original winning team members to parade, pose for photies etc…

Much prefer the above to long haul pre-season friendlies and to play against better calibre players to enhance our CL prospects.

    Thoughts?

I hope they do as well, but we know they won’t, sadly.

The game in scotland is all about what the hun want’s, and footballers are not allowed to play in hunland.

Throw Innesta, Messi into say the Motherwell team, would they be the superstars they are, I would very much doubt it, but if they were allowed to play like they are in Spain and the rest of the world, they may well do, this is what I can’t get the head around, the suits want to dine at the top table for sure, and they can’t allow football players to play in scotland, but it’s plain to see that the loyalty to the ludge is stronger, how feckin sad is that.

  16. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Bob Kelly also said that European games should be a one off cup tie, with home advantage based on the luck of the draw. Just like the Scottish Cup.

His reasoning was that fans were being cheated by only seeing half of the contest.

don’t know if he factored in the logistics of a replay, in the event of a draw.

This is a thought provoking article on E Tims covering Scottish football and the kind of society in which it operates.

It has always perplexed me why it has taken three years and a campaign to get a straight answer to the questions underlying Res12.

I mean what is the worst than can happen now if those questions are answered? An apology from the SFA for using the letter of the law to circumvent the spirit of it?

An admission the rules that allowed a club to participate in the CL at a time when Sherriff Officers were calling to collect overdue tax are in fact lacking or that the rules are only OK if they are honestly followed?

I just don’t get it but it raises wider issues about Scottish society that are clearly articulated at

Chris mentions the absence of Leigh.

For me , the absence of Tierney was the biggest no brainer.

    Wee Gordon does a Ronny.

  22. I think the problem with the Scotland team is the negative attitude towards it by the mssm particularly.

The mssm were hoping for armageddon and it did not happen.

Once the new team reached the top league they halted their negativity unti they realised they were pish so have now returned to form.

The rubbishing of the SPL has people believing that anyone in the English leagues is better so average fannies get picked from there.

Also the style and system used by the coach seems to be more about damage limitation and this has a negative effect on players self belief.

The spl has improved in playing style but the refs are still to tolerant of cloggers with zero skill.

This was very evident with Thomsons tolerance of Foresters thuggery.

Until the mnidset of the country changes and the anyone but Timmy prejudice is removed we will always be a football backwater.

  23. Imo, football in Scotland has never really recovered from the season we won the League at Love Street. Hearts ran us close not by playing entertaining football but by running and running and running to compensate for their lack of ability. That plus the continuing acceptance of thuggery (get tore intae thum nonsense) has hampered the development of skill. Until Scottish football, and in particular the referees, has a change of mindset and a true football culture develops, we will always be a backwater.

  24. PARKHEADCUMSALFORD

I also blame Souness for the demise also.

For all the money he spent they played a very physical system.

His midfield hunted in packs and when they won the ball shifted it to full backs who launched high balls to big forwards.

They were more like bottom half teams in England who made up in physicality what they lacked in skill.

A lot of SPL teams followed suit and signed more big physical specimens that removed the skill from the Scottish game.

Once the huns died this approach became less important and Scottish teams are trying to adapt to a more pass and move game.

Hearts seem to be an exception with their bludgeoning style.

The unfortunate thing is the referees are still stuck in the past and the cloggers are given license.

Like you said unless the referees understand and administer fairly the game here will always be a backwater.

Trust me mate, I would have had no hesitation on posting any of the dealings that I had with that “solicitor” on here, but it would be against the rules, and I can’t have 6/7 Moderators knocking at my door ? LOL.

Unless of course these ” Moderators” were lookalike Kylie’s ,Liz Hurleys, Ashley Judd etc ?

Those are the kind of gals that I would be happy to get into trouble with every day of the week !

If you visit the solicitors website, somewhere on it is tales ( from July 2015) from Scottish Sunday ” newspapers”,in relation to a Glasgow OAP couple who had engaged him soon after I did. Also in that story ( like mine), is an astonishing account of how the Law Society of Scotland viewed that particular case.

Not for the 1st time in my experience , the Law Society are more than capable of giving a view that can be described as being ” Patently Perverse”, at best !

My reading of the Law in Scotland is that every solicitor/advocate MUST be a member of the Law Society . Therefore, when you have complaints they are ” considered” by the Law Society of Scotland, of which a Scottish solicitor us a member of.

Apparently in England & Wales,it is an ” Independent” body that investigates complaints against solicitors ?

The nearest comparison that I can make on here is this –

” Think Rankers/Sevco and the SFA/SPL Membership etc”

Then think Law Society of Scotland and Scottish Solicitors Membership etc, and perhaps you will see where I’m coming from ?
