Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

think I am right in saying that most of the posters on this wonderful site come from a Celtic supporting background and I have taken much pleasure in reading tales as often poignant and heartbreaking as they are funny and inspirational about uncles and fathers and the generational aspect of being a hoop.

We often hear ‘thank ghod I was born a tim and not one of them’ and lets face it it must be awful to be a hun right now. All of their certainties, all of their rights and entitlements are crumbling. The ‘for every fiver’ era is gone. The prospect of swoops for Serie A stars have dwindled. The dream of matching Mr Stein’s acheivment is now unacheivable.

Even to the most myopic of berz, the realisation that those days are past is inescapable. The more savvy amongst them will even be able to see through the MSM’s insistance that it’s merely a flesh wound and once the great institution is saved all will be back to normal. Each and every one of them bewildered by the twitching corpse and the daily if not hourly fantasies peddled about a miracle recovery by Traynor, Young and his cohorts.

So as I said, for that and for many other reasons, thank ghod I’m not one of ‘them’

My story is a wee bit different though from what I perceive to be the majority.

There was no tradition of supporting the hoops in my family. My dad, not a football man never showed any love of Celtic when I was growing up and used to gently rib me about ‘the pudding team’ as he described them. My mum was a great admirer of Hib’s famous five from the fifties. I had uncles and a grandad who played at Highland League and for one of the Dundee teams before the war.

My memory of cominig to support the hoops was in Primary one at my ‘ non-denominational’ school in 1967. A big girl ( about 10) asked me who I supported, Celtic or Rangers?

Fortunately I made the best choice of my life, which compared to some of my other choices through my 50 years maybe the competition ain’t that tough.

I honestly don’t remember if I was conciously aware of the lisbon lions at that time. I was five and like I say there were no Celtic scarves or memorabilia in the house. I suppose i could have been subconciously ‘aware’ of news bulletins, newspapers and the likes . Who knows?

I have no Irish or Catholic roots. Second generation lapsed presbyterian. Managed to persuade my mothjer when I was about 11 that Sunday School wasn’t for me.

    Sorry for long post

First final for me 1972 v Hibs, then 73,74,75 & many more. Had today all planned out to be there too, but a certain hun Beattie changed my plans. Hope the capital is green & white tonight.

  3. First game I attended, at the age of ten, was the 1967 Scottish cup fina.:The (soon to be) Lisbon Lions 2, Aberdeen 0. Not a bad introduction to a lifetime of Celtic supporting……

I want Hibs to win this afternoon but they have had such a poor season Hearts must be favourites but its a cup tie and who wants it most may well decide the winner. If Hampden has a full house this afternoon it will go a long way to showing that Scottish football doesnt need the huns.H.H.

  9. skyisalandfill on

Celtic 6 -Hibs 1 . Same for me. Was at a Elgin City v Celtic boys game before the final. Celtic won that one two. Would love to know who was in that boys team. 72 I think????

  10. Joe Filippis Haircut on

My fist cup final was Rangers v Dundee I believe there were 147,000 in Hampden that day the huns won 3-1. H.H.

  11. Thanks to Roy Croppie for the Pathe News coverage of the 69 final.

I was only 7 and not yet allowed to go to matches against Them. I mind that we were underdogs as Jinky and Yogi were unavailable and running upstairs when my mum put on the wireless at Half-time . A minute later she was running up the stairs ‘The Bhoys are winning three nothing’.

I think George Connelly’s goal is my favourite memory of matches against TFOD- the ball boy behind the goal going mad with joy adds to the magic. And Stevie’s goal wasnae bad either!

  12. Anorak corner – the 1975 final, I thought that Wilson scored twice.

I’m sure that Celtic never won a final when Kenny scored.

When did the Hoops pick it up? Anyone?

Couldn’t say for sure, but it was certainly being sung at Celtic Park in the Fifties.

Some of the lyrics were a bit less wholesome than those of Gracie or Perry.

Would like Hibs to win it but my head (and my money) say it will be Hertz. 6/1 treble on Hertz, Hammers and Munich.

  19. I have 2 cousins who are diehard Hertz fans and are off to the game today

In fairness to them, they always stated they wanted Celtic to win Glasgow derbies

Whilst I wished them luck this morning I couldn’t say to them I wanted a Hertz win

After what happened to Lenny @ Tynecastle, I couldn’t

  20. On with my tin hat on this morning as I know my chosen profession rubs up certain people on here but glad to see some arrests made in relation to the vandalism in the bathrooms, and hopefully strathclyde polis will be minus one thug bigot soon enough.

I m lovin the memory lapses of us older hoops.. The 6-1 Hibs game … We know roughly when it was but some like me .. Ah the years merge in to one..

  23. Afternoon Bhoys and Ghirls. as much as I would like to I just cannot get up for the cup today. I do hope that the Hibees do the mini’s but keep getting this feeling of being cheated out of being there with the Hoop’s. So not even sure if i will watch it.

On a lighter note got my wee nephew Aiden’s First Holy Communion tomorrow in St Agnes’ Lambhill same Chapel I made mine in 45years ago. Then off to Celtic Park for a wee do for him, really looking forward to tomorrow.

anyway wee rant over re cup I hope Hibs, Bayern and Blackpool do the business today and Leinster in the Rugger.

also could have swore I seen someone post earlier they were umpiring cricket, sorry mate got to be the most boring game ever, but hey each to their own.

  24. A son of Dan 12.44- I got married the day before that final, anniversary was on Thursday. 27 years, jeez where do they all go?

First Cup final I clarly remember was the 72 final v Hibs, 3 days after Dixie skied the ball in the penalty shoot out, he became a hero. Clearly recall it as a very balmy day and a huge thunderstorm after the match.

I may have been at the 70 final v Aberdeen but have somehow blotted this out of my memory. Was this game played after the 70 European Cup final, seem to recall being taken to Hampden as a consolation?

  25. Paul67 et al

First Scottish Cup Final was the 4-0 demolition of Rangers in 1969, though I had been to a previous Glasgow Cup Final, at Celtic Park. Was at the League Cup Final (6-3) against Hibs, also in April 1969, part of a bone fide treble with all three trophies won in the same month. Took Martin O’Neill to replicate that, which shows just how difficult it can be, even for Celtic, to be that successful in one season. Lots of reasons for that I am sure. If you include the 1972 Cup Final then Hibs have been our opponents in three great cup victories, two Scottish and one League. And yet Hibs were a terrific side back in those days, packed full of top players, with only one weakness, they were not Celtic. The fact is though the Hibees were our inspiration and will get whatever encouragement I can give them today. Come on the Hibs!

  27. I’m hoping for a good game more than anything. Obviously I’d prefer Hibs to win but it would be no great deal to me if they didn’t.

It’s a pity we didn’t make it to the final. It would have made a great end to the season.

  28. What a day of footie! BBQ on beers out mon the hibees,Blackpool and bayern!

Will give jelly and ice cream a rest today much more to come in next few weeks!

  29. My earliest Celtic memory is of Jim Kennedy, Celtic’s uncompromising left back, who was not unlike Stuart Pearce in style, putting some little winger on to the red ash surrounding the pitch right in front of me, I’ve never forgotten it.

  30. My 1st Attendance at a Scottish Cup final was the 100th Final in 1985 Vs Dundee Utd, who were by no means the underdogs – they had a fine team. I can still clearly remember being in line with the left hand top corner (as I looked) and the position of the ball when Davie Provan with a few minutes remaining struck perfectly into that corner – a memorable experience, particularly when McGarvey somehow extended his neck to reach a cross from feed the bear and nod into the net. Hamish McAlpine might have been the DU goalie – can’t be bothered googling to find out. I was 11 year s old at that final.

However, my earliest recollection of the Scottish Cup final is the 1980 final, when George McClusky expertly deflected a Danny McGrain shot to seal the victory over the soon to be extinct rfc.

I will never forget my Dad’s pal tying a green ribbon to a metal beer tankard in Brian McCaughey’s house and them taking turns carrying me on their shoulders singing and dancing while I was holding the cup aloft – I would have been 6 years old that cup final.

Those memories are from a long time ago, early in my life, but they are as clear as anything I can remember. Great times & I look forward to many more in the future…

  31. My favourite cup final? Agree with Paul 1995, up their with Seville and stopping the 10. We go to so many cup finals and I hate hampden, it never seems as special as it does for the wee teams fans but 1995 was so important for us. After big Pierre scored it seemed liked hours until the final whistle went and the relief was massive.
