Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

”The club had two principal aims…… Second, the club was to be a bridge in the East End for the large Irish community and the native Glaswegians, between whom social frictions were growing, especially as Scotland was traditionally a Protestant country and the Irish were Catholic. Brother Walfrid saw the need for social integration, and his vision was a football club that Scottish and Irish, Protestants and Catholics alike could support.”

Is there any evidence to support this assertion?

  2. Some observations from watching the sport on the telly in a licensed premises in our capital y’day. Reasonably nice area, big sports bar type place. Firstly, there are a hell of lot of Ulster rugby fans living in Embra, judging from the wild celebrations every time they scored v Leinster in the Heineken Cup Final. I was reminded that people will support them here as they are British, like us. Hmm. Secondly, there are a hell of a lot of Chelsea fans in Embra too. Favourite part of the evening was when a big, neddy, Scottish Chelsea fan (read Hearts/Rangers Hun) did the old GIRUY action with bulging head veins several times to a nice group of German students minding their own business. Charming. Oh, and when a drunk Hearts fan called me a c*nt when I reminded him politely that the pub was strictly no colours that evening and he may struggle to get served. Cue G67 heads home for a kebab straight after the pen shoot-out to avoid such cretins in the late bars. Hearts and Chelsea in one day. Certainly not a Carlsberg day.

  3. As the dust settles and champions are crowned all over Europe, in Scotland a persistant problem remains. The problem is there in other countries as well, but Scotland has never looked for a cure for this particular virus. The referees, of course. After the strike the season before last, Dallasgate, Dougie-Dougie and all that, we are still presented with the same faces purporting to be referees. It’s not just Scotland, they have been an embarassment internationally as well. Phil McG seemed to champion John Fleming as the man to sort it out, but it looks as if Mr Fleming has “gone native” as they say. I’m not quite sure of the setup, but formerly 6 out of 7 members of the SFA panel adjudicating refereeing decisions and complaints were former referees themselves. Shome mishtake shurely? There is no shortage of evidence of inadequacy, or indeed blatant bias. Just one Celtic/Rangers match properly looked at re decisions would back this up. Remember Bougherra kicking Robbie Keane off the park at Ibrox? Who was the referee? None other than the boul’ Dougie. BTM’s team were handing Rangers a football lesson that day, and not for the first time that season. I think that game broke Tony Mowbray. I think it was a deliberate policy from the referees to allow Celtic and any other team who were in a position to hurt Rangers through playing decent football to be kicked off the park. I have all the evidence I need in the form of Utube videoes made by savvy football supporters. If you collected the lot between Celtic and the other teams you would need another external hard drive. If you were colecting decisions against Rangers I suggest a few kilobytes would do it.

We are in another world where we do not believe what is reported in the Scottish “press”. The evidence is out there. Surely John Fleming looks at fansites and Utube videoes? Mr Fleming needs to take a long hard look at himself and his referees, starting with Specsavers himself, Willie Collum.

So, in essence, if Scottish football wants to get back to the days of Jinky, Baxter, McGrauin et al, then let the footballers play football, protected from thugs like McCullough and Whittaker, Black and the rest of that ilk.

    Sort out the referees.

Bring in a foreign head of development.

And while you’re at it, get some proper commentators on the likes of Sportscene and the rest.

I don’t know…1888 was a long time ago…I did think the extract from the book was extremely well written & researched and I assume that the quote you refer to was as a result of the author looking at contemporaneous documents.

From my own history I know for a stone cold fact that my great-uncle Michael, after whom I’m named, came over to Glasgow in 1912 to be the first Irish Catholic lawyer in the city, but he was blacklisted by the O.O.,could not take up his post, and returned to Ireland. He was not best amused.

That’s more of an assumption than I’m prepared to make.

There’s a lot of nonsense propounded about the formation of Celtic so my default mode is disbelief until I see satisfactory evidence to prove any claims that are made.

Ok, some facts here from a finance professional. The caller is indeed correct. If the company cannot be refinanced and a deal with creditors is not done, then liquidation would or should involve a fire sale of all the assets. All the money from the fire sale goes into a big pot and the list of creditors will be paid according to their rank in the statement of affairs (in no particular order as i cant be bothered looking it up, fixed charge, floating charge, HMRC, Administrators fees etc). equity share holders come last, so at the end of the liquidation process, whytey’s shares are worth hee-haw anyway.

FW is very disingenuous as CVA may be the easiest for ‘everyone’ but it may not provide the greatest value to creditors. Duff and Phelps are not there for the good of Rangers, and their moronic supporters. They are there to protect the value of the assets, to see if they can trade the business out of trouble or to seek a long term funding solution. All D&P’s activities should be focused on what will provide the greatest value for creditors. IMHO this has not been done. If I was working for HMRC and indeed one of the chunkier ‘ordinary creditors’ on the purchase ledger I would be fuming right now. Absolutely fuming.

When the results of the EBT’s is finally made public I do think the fall out from that will be the catalyst for quite a number of radical and necessary changes to occur.

The individuals concerned and the extent of the cheating and corruption will be made known…..and they will have no place to hide.

Talking to a Rangurs man last night. Convinced the SFA are out to get them and that they are being victimised by a pro-Celtic establishment. A nice touch in the ‘banter’ was that if this was Celtic, the Catholic Church would be up in arms etc. and Celtic would be helped more. I correctly pointed out that if this was Celtic, and assuming that there were no Fergus/DD types in the wings, Celtic would have been ushered into history long before now.

It wasn’t so much about what the caller was saying, more about FW not realising that if a CVA is rejected then the club ‘reverts’ to CW under an agreement between SEVCO & CW.

FW then states that the terms of ‘redundancy-lite’ contracts he has negotiated with the players mean that they can leave for free!

SEVCO’s CVA is to be voted on at a creditors’ meeting on 6 June, the money runs out on 30 May, everyone knows that the CVA is a bust, there will be no money to pay the players the reduced salary let alone the money due to them.

CW is simply waiting for the BTC, then he cashes his chips. Ranjurz, in the meantime have no professional players left.

They were doing so badly under the great J McG at that time they nearly didn’t get an invite. The club was just so big in Scotland that it was felt they could not be ignored. Poetic justice perhaps. Had none since, mind.

  23. If you go to watch McBeth at the theatre, read a novel or watch a film & its “lies” & myths inspire you to change your life & become a better person is that not a good thing?

If you believe its real then that is childish. But its understanding the kernel of truth inside the myth that matters.

I would rather read Shakespeares myths than what passed for “fact” in old Williams time.

But then what do I know? I, a mere child, bow to the superior sagacity of Ernie the Wise.
