Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

I was in London and had no idea of the score when I got round to my pals at full time. Put BBC1 on and Motson (I think) started off the sentence by saying ‘and in Scotland Rangers…’ and my heart sank before he finished with ‘lost to Celtic’… as if the Huns had some god-given right to the trophy and they had been denied it.

And I thought if that had have been any other team in any other country it would have been reported as a team winning a cup, not the other team losing it.

Went to 1965 final with a guy from my school (Brian McKenna are you a CQNer?).

On January 14 this year, outside Celtic Park I met Billy McNeill for the first time. We chatted for a wee bit (I was Holy Cross Hamilton and he was Our Lady’s Motherwell, so we had a bit of banter) and then I explained how I’d seen his winning goal in 1965 as he climbed on Bobby Lennox’s back to head the ball.

He burst out laughing and said “Aye, and he says he’s been carrying me ever since.”

There was an FA cup final, not sure if it was ’69 pr 71.

Anyway, Man City won and the interviewer said to manager Joe Mercer post match, ” incidentally, Celtic won the Scottih Cup today”.

Mercer replied, “and if they had been playing here today, they would have won this, too”.

    A fan was Joe.

1st Scottish Cup Final for me 1967 against Aberdeen.

    The Celtic team that day…

Simpsom, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeil, Clark, Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld and Lennox

    2nd Scottish Cup Final – 1969 Celtic 4 Rangers 0

Ditto….as we were at them together,

I remember just getting into the crowd as the game had kicked off…then big billy nets with that header,..can and pie in the air, didn’t even get a bite.

  11. Ref having a poor game already ….Black went for the man not the ball with a leading elbow……Hibs not getting many of the decisions.

First final was 66 (replay) and as my Da was on night-shift, so I was allowed to go (in his place) with my Uncle Dan; knew on the Monday that I was going and it was all the Purgatory/Limbo stories rolled into one, waiting for the day!

Anyway, at school on the day, and asked Miss Brogan, Miss Brogan, Miss Brogan, if I could go home early as I had an upset tummy; of course son, no need to go on and on but will speak to your Mother at devotions tonight to see that you are ok eh!…..

To this day, I think she knew the script……..

Had told all the guys in the class at playtime kick-about that I was going to the game that night….

‘Aye, right, so ye ur’ ………

    ‘Am ur really’……

‘OK, get a programme then eh!’……

‘Aye, sure ah wull ah’ll get two’……..

So far up in the God’s at Hampden; seriously, even years later being in Barcelona where the players looked like dots was ‘nothing’ in comparison to my childhood rememberances……

    Long story cut short…

    No programmes on sale, really!!!

Wrong result but still a magical experience…

The whole experience in longer format was recounted on ‘The Dubai Hoops CSC’ website and response(s) came back from erstwhile classmates saying ‘ah didnae believe you about the nae programmes line then and ah still don’t’……wae a wee smiley, I might add!!!

Best cup final 1965! As an older CQN I well remember the defeats post 1957 and the 1965 final reminded me why I was part of The Celtic Family. Agree with Paul 67 re the 1995 final, a watershed for CFC.

BTW the 1967 team was not too bad and if only BJ kept the same eleven for Lisbon who knows? Did he? Halcyon days
