Great talent deserve a stage, even if its owner is not worthy

311

I see former Celtic youth prodigy Islam Feruz has been talking to the media. He has taken the Liam Miller football career path, hyped beyond belief at Celtic, disappear into anonymity at an English club, before pitching up at Hibs.

Feruz, who turns 20 tomorrow, is three years younger than Miller was when he left Celtic, so the Somali-born Scotland-eligible player has time on his side, but apart from a bank account which few leaving their 20s could scarcely imagine, and no doubt plenty of life experiences of living as a young footballer in London, the script thus far could have been so much better for the player.

I watched him at youth level and it was clear he had more ability than any of his peer group, but turning a school leaver into a great talent takes more than inherited gifts. It requires work, sacrifice and a willingness to learn. Scottish football’s folklore is full of tales of unfulfilled potential.

There’s no love lost with Feruz. He took what was on offer from Celtic and left the moment he was able to sign for an English club, but I hope he makes it, both at Hibs this season and thereafter as a great player. Great talents deserve a stage, even if its owner is not always worthy.

Thanks to everyone who got the ball rolling yesterday with our Walfrid and Directors’ Box hospitality auction for the Foundation, and special thanks to club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing, who provided the prize.  It’s a money-can’t-buy experience for three people to enjoy, so eat, drink and enjoy – but you’ll need to bid here first.

HAITI! HAITI! HE CELTS ARE HERE!!!!

    From The Record…

Celtic Park rebuilt and ready to open its doors.. in Haiti

    19:12, 8 SEPTEMBER 2015 UPDATED 19:13, 8 SEPTEMBER 2015

    BY DAVID TAYLOR

A NEW stadium named after the home of the Scottish champions will officially open in the earthquake hit region of the Caribbean after receiving a little help from the Celtic FC Foundation.

IT’S the hallowed turf in Glasgow’s East End that has produced a string of football greats.

But now it has emerged that Paradise has been rebuilt – in the Caribbean.

A new top-notch facility in earthquake-hit Haiti will be dubbed Celtic Park and open its doors for the first time on Friday

Boasting a full-size football pitch, seating, and a stage for community events, the complex was built on what was once a makeshift camp for people displaced by the 2010 earthquake.

The project, in Solino, a notoriously poor district of the capital Port-au-Prince, was completed with help from the Celtic FC Foundation, and Catholic Relief Services.

Celtic Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell said: “Celtic was established as a football club to help people in need and this ethos remains a fundamental part of our club almost 130 years after our formation.

“We are so pleased to be involved in this particular project and it is fitting that the Solino soccer field, once the scene of such heartache will now act as a major positive focal point within the community.”

Much of Port-au-Prince was devastated by the earthquake which saw an estimated 1.5million people displaced.

Following the devastation, Solino was home to nearly 700 families living in tarpaulin tents.

Like you,I wish Feruz no ill-will. He has a lot of growing up to do.

I hope he does so before I did,or he’ll be too old to play anywhere!

  7. Islam Feruz = spoiled brat, a pawn of his advisors. Some of whom may drop him now he’s drifting from the EPL glamour.

Could be good for him at Hibs, make or break his carerr to see if he fancies a cold winter’s night at Dumbarton. Interested to see how he performs against the Zombies.

  8. You really are the most wonderful bunch of strangers off the internet!

I will sit down with Olivia and her Mum tonight and we will read all your lovely posts.

The down side is I will want to give you all a (manly) hug at the Hootenanny on 10/10!

As Paddy Gallagher would say, a stranger is a friend you’ve yet to meet.

    Thanks again.

  9. I watched Feruz play for Chelsea at Old Trafford against Man U.

It was the English youth FA Cup final.

He was the poorest player on the park.

Well below the standard of all others on show.

He was too small, too slow on and off the ball.

He won’t make a top class professional player.

It is psychologically damaging to spend more than twenty minutes in Darvel without recourse to bevvy, and lots of it.

  12. Afternoon just up nightshift, what a horrible un godly shift, never get used to them. That wee Feruz no even worth a discussion due to his dismissal of Tommy Burns, obviously none of Tommy’s humility brushed off him.

Dervil ye say Fourgreenfields, no the worst place in Ayrshire beginning with D, we’ll reserve that for Dalmellington a hole of holes.

Much as I love my home county,I’m well aware of its shortcomings. Dalmellington is high on the list, but if you wanna stick wi the initial letter, has to be Drongan.

To be fair to Feruz we all say and do stupid things when we are in our late teens. Who know what was really going on around the lad at the time. Now he has a chance to show he has grown up a bit and let his football do the talking. Holding a grudge against him serves no purpose. I’m sure Tommy would still want him to succeed.

  18. Interesting notions on Feruz. I was suggesting to my mate earlier in the summer that maybe, just maybe, our manager could sort him out. My mate wanted nothing to do with him. While I will not defend his treatment of Celtic and Tommy Burns in particular, he was a boy too easily led, imo. People on here are forever using that a an excuse for the excesses that some of our young bhoys indulge in. If he were to mature, his talent would suggest he could be a great player.

I enjoyed your Hmmmmmmm. I am sure we shall both pay for that. He told me he has his own NDP if ever posting. Suggest, you just keep him up to date. ha ha. Have to say, we have the same opinions on Celtic performances, so most of your comments reflect what he and I would say, though never agreed on Hooper coming back. He infuriated me with his lack of control when receiving a ball facing the Celtic goal.

I probably, came in around the time they were ending. T. Conroy ran it after them. I ran the team after him. Don’t remember Galardia ( Steamboats used to meet at Glenbervie, not sure before or after game), but Mistrel were one of the top teams and other from East end of Glasgow, AC Milanda, West of Scotland (David Moyes, dad used to run them). Alan Brazil played one game for Steamboats as a school boy. KTF C

I fully understand that people streaming or buying knock off Celtic shirts etc only affects our club in a bad way.. I always bought from Celtic shop etc (until it closed in Derry ) I have Celtic TV here in oz even thou I rarely get to use it..

But to say we should all pay more to get better product on the park aswel as off it isn’t a great argument.. Look at how much our manager gets from the transfer sales. Iv no faith our board would invest much more if we gave more.

I love the idea of a Celtic membership but would only do it if it meant we all got votes on board.. Fan on Board an a greater say of things. That sadly wouldn’t suit our board so I don’t see them ever considering the idea.

But a worldwide membership scheme could be something unique and help bring us forward.
