Great talent deserve a stage, even if its owner is not worthy

311

I see former Celtic youth prodigy Islam Feruz has been talking to the media. He has taken the Liam Miller football career path, hyped beyond belief at Celtic, disappear into anonymity at an English club, before pitching up at Hibs.

Feruz, who turns 20 tomorrow, is three years younger than Miller was when he left Celtic, so the Somali-born Scotland-eligible player has time on his side, but apart from a bank account which few leaving their 20s could scarcely imagine, and no doubt plenty of life experiences of living as a young footballer in London, the script thus far could have been so much better for the player.

I watched him at youth level and it was clear he had more ability than any of his peer group, but turning a school leaver into a great talent takes more than inherited gifts. It requires work, sacrifice and a willingness to learn. Scottish football’s folklore is full of tales of unfulfilled potential.

There’s no love lost with Feruz. He took what was on offer from Celtic and left the moment he was able to sign for an English club, but I hope he makes it, both at Hibs this season and thereafter as a great player. Great talents deserve a stage, even if its owner is not always worthy.

Thanks to everyone who got the ball rolling yesterday with our Walfrid and Directors’ Box hospitality auction for the Foundation, and special thanks to club sponsor Intelligent Car Leasing, who provided the prize.  It’s a money-can’t-buy experience for three people to enjoy, so eat, drink and enjoy – but you’ll need to bid here first.

  1. Morning all.

    Lovely day down here.

Have we been having problems again? Whatever, I’m back for my daily fix. Big game on Saturday and it looks as if it is going to be played in traditional football weather: pouring rain.

So sorry, yes it should be prima donna.

Is that the best you can do? A blog is for posting opinions.

  4. Lennons Passion- sorry for delay in replying,i think we will have a better idea of where RD is,in terms of his ability, after the Europa League games. His game management and substitutions have to improve IMO.HH

Bada Bing. Ronny is a young manager on a steep learning curve I honestly think you and I could manage Celtic in the SPL and still win it.Europe is a whole different kettle of fish. I think Ronny has 12 months and if at this time next season we are not in the CL group stages he should be replaced by a more experienced manager. H.H.

  6. I am down south for a wee break with the kids and staying in Alton. I can’t wait to see my 2 and half year old face when we get to Cbeebies Land in ALton Towers!

However, more important matters, anyone know of somewhere we I can catch the Ajax game in that part of the world?

    Many Thanks

  7. JFH-I think this Europa League campaign ,will tell us if he will be the man to take us forward, can we trust him with another CLQ ,if we flop in the EL ?HH

  8. Aberdeen have had the whole international break to prepare for this game. With Brown struggling, a good result for us on Saturday would be an excellent achievement.

I’m having serious issues with the CQN site. Don’t know about the rest of you but it’s becoming a bit of a pain.

Accessing the site is becoming almost impossible most of the time. As soon as I get on the site on my iPhone, I never get as far as the comments before being assailed by adverts and being redirected to an apps site. This is happening day after day and lots of times each day.

I came home last night about 10:15 pm and tried to access the site on my iPad only to be kicked off at least 8 times before I gave up.

After the site changed recently I experienced some initial problems but it seemed to settle after a week or so but my current experiences are sucking the joy out going on to CQN each day. I don’t know what’s causing it but I’ll persevere for a wee while longer and then I’m afraid it’ll be adios as the frustration is taking it’s toll.

  10. Ard Macha,

I posted much the same a couple of days ago. Nobody seems to take account of the fact that the bulk of our team play 2 matches a week during the season, while the others play one at most. It must have an impact, particularly towards the end of the season.

So I’ll be in Sydney this weekend without the wife & weans so any recommendations for a place to watch the Aberdeen game would be gratefully accepted.

Don’t think we clinched any of the nine at Paradise, did we? Made for massive away crowds on those particular days. We even won one without playing when Deidco lost their first game of the season in their last game of the season at home to the sheep.

Big Jock was at the Scottish Cup final that day, Dunfermline v Hearts I think, and said it was the best result he’d ever heard at Hampden!

Still packed-out for our last game the following midweek up at East End Park, right enough!

    Won 2-1.

Thanks for your speedy advice. I’ve turned off Javascript on my iPhone. The problem with the adverts tends to arise when I’m out and about so I’ll know in about an hour if your advice has been successful.

After our last minute win at pittodrie and the Ronny roar to celebrate, the sheep have a point to prove.

    It won`t be easy.

I remember that season. The meeja asked, “How can a team only lose one game and still lose the League?” After the Dons beat them 2-1. Of course they failed to,point out that Celtic only lost one game also that season …. against The Huns.
