ALISTAIR JOHNSTON is ahead of schedule as he bids to make a dramatic first-team comeback.

The Celtic defender was originally scheduled to be out of Brendan Rodgers’ first-team plans for THREE months after his hamstring injury was diagnosed, as CQN reported on August 22.

Johnston had to be helped off the field after collapsing to the turf in the first-half of the Champions League qualifying goalless draw against Kairat Almaty at Parkhead.

SMILES BETTER…Alistair Johnston is congratulated by Luke McCowan and James Forrest after his goal in the 4-1 Premier Sports League Cup win over Falkirk on August 15.

The Canadian international has missed the last nine games while Anthony Ralston and Colby Donovan have filled in at right-back.

However, Johnston, who celebrated his 27th birthday last Wednesday, has returned to full training and is pushing for a place in Rodgers’ line-up, as was demonstrated in a club video featuring the player at Lennoxtown this week.

Despite his eagerness to participate as swiftly as possible, the Hoops’ midday kick-off against Dundee at Dens Park on Sunday will be a stretch too far for the popular Celt.

Last week, Johnston took to Instagram to let the supporters know he much he appreciated their best wishes and sent an optimistic message: “Thank you, back soon.”

Looks like the Canadian is a man of his word!
