Greenock MSP credits Sturgeon’s attack on Celtic for Newco action

239

In August, after Celtic suspended and fined Boli Bolingoli for breaking isolation rules, Nicola Sturgeon postponed two Celtic games and took the opportunity at her daily press briefing to grandstand on the issue, condemning “privileged football players…. incapable of living up to their responsibilities.”

Earlier this month, when Newco suspended and fined Jordan Jones and George Edmundson after police action, Sturgeon took a completely different course.  She made no comment instead allowing her Government spokesperson to support the club:  “We commend Rangers [sic.] for taking such swift and decisive action in this instance, to protect the rest of their squad and wider public.”

Until now, no one from the SNP has been prepared to answer questions on why their leader was prepared to stick the boot into Celtic, postpone their games and grab a microphone to declare it, then praise Newco for acting in the exact same way after a rule break.

Yesterday, Stuart McMillan MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, wrote to a CQN’er with this nonsense:

“What the First Minister is recognising, is that as a result of the Scottish Government’s response to the Celtic and Aberdeen players’ breaches, the SFA and Scottish football clubs have taken a more robust approach to ensuring their players follow the COVID-19 rules in place for them, and where a breach has occurred, clubs are prepared to take swift action.

“That is why Rangers were commended for their recent response.”

They are giving Nicola Sturgeon the credit for the reaction of Newco – which is a fantasy – and they are even claiming her banning of Celtic games was responsible.  He did not care enough, or seem to notice, that Celtic and Newco were treated differently.

Sturgeon screwed up.  Her gut reaction to the Bolingoli breach was to rush to the podium and vent, when Jones and Edmundson she drooled support at Newco’s same reaction to Celtic’s.  Celtic were an easy target but she should have said nothing if she was not prepared to treat other clubs (or just club) the same way.  This is your Government.

There is no meaningful opposition to Nicola in Scotland.

No effective opposition party (Richard Leonard? come on!)

    Not within her own party.

    Not from local govt.

    Not from the media.

She can do what she likes and still be worshipped.

Just because she’s not Bozo Boris.

The slavish devotion to the Mother of the Nation is pathetic to behold.

Like all politicians she has feet of clay. She needs to be effectively opposed.

We are not in a good place politically at the moment.

  2. See that’s the thing with Our Club…………imo

If we come out and say even the most innocuous comment in reply to the slings, arrows, an’ even bombs and bullets from our many and varied detraktors then all it serves is to further unite unholy allegiances throughoooot scoddland.

We’re on a hidin’ to nothin’ in terms of public opinion. There’s is very little PR in good news for Celtic in Scotland……………..It should be enough that the Support recognise this.

    Great stuff Paul.

    Genuine favour to ask.

Update your leader please by highlighting the word “after” in the first paragraph (3rd word) and second paragraph (14th word) in BOLD UPPER CASE (or similar).

IMHO, this will make your excellent leader all the more powerful.

Totally agree with everything you said.

However, the fact that the SNP had to reply to a CQNer, rather than Lawwell, one of the highest paid CEO’s in British football, defies belief.

For Celtic to progress, ‘the sharp suited man’. which will go down as the ultimate CQN ‘succulent lamb journalism’ comment has to go.

I don’t imagine you thought through your header properly as it only shows up how incompetent your man Lawwell is.

  13. I commend (sic) the Greenovk MSP for, at least, having the guts to attempt to explain, however unsuccessfully, the bizarrely different responses to different Covid breaches by different clubs.

It is Step 1 in the process of holdiing governments and authorities to account, that you get an answer to a query. So, let’s give the Greenock MSP a bye, for choosing to embark on Step 1.

Step 2 is being prepared to answer questions and defend or amend the position you took in Step 1. Will anyone from the SP go that far?

And Step 3 is to declare the matter closed as satisfacorilty reolved or apologise and make amends if you got it wrong.

We should expect this level of response from those we ELECT to put in charge.

Far too much of the response on CQN has been from the cult followers, who regard a closed-ranks response to criticism as a form of admirable Party Discipline; it is the exact opposite.

Even those like “Let’s all do the Huddle”, who grudgingly admit Paul has a point, can’t resist the sarky “but he don’t half go on about it!” addendum. That’s the equivalent of Sevcites shouting “Obsession” or “It’s all about the Rangers!” whenever their misdemeanours are raised.

It is juvenile, unconvincing and unbecoming of a grown up nation if you can’t justify your stance or admit “we got it wrong” instead of passing on the blame to the Covid virus itself, as the First Minister did when (im)pertinently questioned about her Govt’s bias towards Rugby Union wallahs.

  14. Being Irish, I am a bit distanced from day to day Scottish Politics.

At a more Global Level I would love to see an Independent Scotland & the total break up of the UK but all these decisions are a matter for Scottish people and Scottish people alone.

From time to time the Blog does go Political so it would be disingenuous of me to say to anyone to keep Politics off the Blog.

However I must admit that Paul’s fairly recent obsession of using his articles to stick the boot into Nicola & the SNP is getting tiresome.

    Paul’s Blog, Paul’s Rules, that I understand,

However if this keeps up, my wee typing finger will find somewhere else to post my Celtic thoughts.

Oops, sorry. I appear to have logged onto GABQN, anyone point me in the direction of CQN please?

  17. I’m not an SNP fanatic. If anything I have a Labour leaning. However, I do think that Nicola and her team are doing a good job in difficult circumstances and frankly better than England.

Of course, hindsight will show that every decision could have been bettered.

On this topic, responding directly on circumstances within the elite sport category and indeed predicating the sanctions the must be applied is absolutely wrong. Elite sports are have a different set of rule for a reason. Any breaches should have been dealt with as part of those rules.

To condemn Celtic (and Aberdeen) for the actions of individuals and then to allow praise to be apportioned to another team for again, breaches by individuals makes my blood boil.

The claim I was rebutting was that Labour controlled Scotland in the 1950s.

By manipulating stastistics (ie quoting the voting figures) I showed this view was mistaken.

Whilst I don’t expect any gratitude for correcting those falling into error I’m not sure why I am subjected to your vehement bile.
