Griffiths deliveries, Shved raw materials, Cluj

242

Still a long way to go, but there’s a sharpness about Celtic that is very reassuring.  Nomme Kalju were unable to make anything of their Champions League qualification tie with Celtic in front of their own fans last night, while Neil Lennon must have been delighted at what he saw throughout the team.

Marian Shved’s added time goal gave us an insight into why Celtic signed the player, who turned 22 this month.  He has pace to burn and an end product.  There is a lot more to the modern game, and it will take a while before we see him fully integrate into the team, but the raw materials are clear to see.

One notable aspect of this tie was the quality of dead-balls from Leigh Griffiths.  Last week’s free kick aside, his corners arrive in the box at pace and a height that created opportunities.  Chris Jullien should have made more of one in particular, but he can be very satisfied with his competitive Celtic debut.

My feeling is that Cluj caught Maccabi Tel-Aviv unprepared.  The Israelis have played half as much football as the Romanians this season. Having knocked out two higher seeds, Cluj will face Celtic next Wednesday with nothing to fear.  We should progress, but this tie will be a necessary step-up in pace ahead of the play-off round, which starts in three weeks.

The relaxed days of summer are over.  Between now and 1 September we play four league games, four European qualifiers and a League Cup tie.  If you check the calendar, cup finals happen in March and May, but the real ones take place in the coming weeks.  Be ready, Celtic.

  1. The battered bunnet.

    You compare cluj to sevco.

Sevco beat us twice last season. We lost 4-3 on aggregate over four league games.

I hope cluj are a much poorer team than sevco.

Not sure about top end of England batting order, but probably trying to get away from the 20/20 hit everything approach.

Very poor quality. Can’t believe we are in the same rounds

‘Hi Ernie – as I understand it from my time reading on here you get kicked in to the board every so often with great relish – don’t think I would be exaggerating too much by suggesting you are in fact a serial board kicker –’

In general terms I find it offensive that an institution like Celtic, which means so much to so many, is effectively owned and controlled by one individual, but that is part and parcel of a broader criticism of our economic system.

Beyond that my only particular, specific criticism of how Celtic is run is confined to the failure to contradict or challenge the same club narrative.

I appreciate that to a lot of people, perhaps yourself included, that’s an irrelevance. Their/your prerogative I suppose, though it does make me wonder what exactly it is such people perceive Celtic to be.

Woakes is a must for his home ground – only way Archer would have played is if Anderson hadn’t been fit or they had gone with an all-seam attack

  6. But, here’s the kicker…

I will point out that, by simply doing their jobs and seeking to enforce the rules of law, Mike Ashley’s lawyers have done more to protect the integrity of Scottish football than I have seen the present Celtic Board do.

When Lawyers in general, and Mike Ashley’s lawyers in particular, are more law abiding, transparent and seemingly ethical (they at least make an effort to enforce the Rules), than our Board …. something is very wrong with our club

    Hi Mike

Been watching the mergers etc on our high st as it shapes itself for the future re internet shopping.

not once have I seen say for example marks&Spencer’s comment on house of Fraser’s takeover or the distress that say Debenhams found themselves in due to how they funded.i think I will be waiting a long time too.

MA suits only what interests his good,I don’t see the connection with him and integrity anywhere Mike, and it stretches it bringin Celtic in to make comment.we won’t and hopefully never will.Celtic had nowt to do with rfc self harm or Trfcs for that matter.with little or no governance we have to look after our team..

Hi Ernie – that’s fair comment and I agree with most of that particularly your point about the same club narrative (yeah – what is that about!). But for me life is too short to worry about things that are way way beyond my control. Celtic for me are the team my Granda supported, my Dad supported, and also both my sons and some of my mates. A love affair that will stay with me until the day I die, I expect lots of Celtic fans are in a similar position.

  8. transfer style guide

    (35) Celtic transfer targets are to be described as ‘surplus to requirements’ by the parent club, this is regardless of the number of International caps gained by the player, or the amount of the impending transfer bid or current transfer market valuation.

  9. Like a few other bhoys on here, I suspect Ashley will tighten his grip on their retail wing with a new very long term contract, operating much to his advantage. King will probably claim victory talking about how Ashley backed down when faced with the wrath of the ‘rangers support’ etc etc

Ultimately though we take in £20 million per season in merchandise, Sevco will be lucky to hit that figure over the course of the next two decades. Ashley has their flutes in a vice for the long term.

Companies do more than comment on each other every day …. when someone cheats them, they sue. (and some, as I know too well, do a lot more than that). If they didn’t, I’d be out of work.

The example you referred to – of Mike Ashley – is a good example. When they cheated him, he didn’t ignore it. But, unlike our Board, he is neither really in bed with the zombies, (and it was DD who said we needed them), or he is not afraid of them (although I think it is the former).

Discussed this more on the other blog, but you cant compare a high street shop to a cartel like professional sport … particularly where, as EL correctly states, we have been really the only show in Scotland for the past decade.

If Celtic and its fans had been genuinely interested in cleaning up the game in Scotland, there are so many things that could have and should have been done….almost none of which were done… and were never even discussed by the club.

From what I have seen, Celtic and most of its fans did not want the game cleaned up because that would have meant getting rid of, or permanently crippling the zombies; they would rather preserve the status quo (particularly, as, at the moment, the ‘status quo’ has us on top).. I dont often agree with GFTB, but he has said, correctly, that what is most important for most Celtic fans is playing the zombies. It seems that, if that means we have to ignore the cheating, and the fact that they died, it is a price that most fans seem willing to pay.

I know that opinion makes me as popular on here as a skunk at a garden party, but that is how I see it.

I agreed with perhaps 98% – the other 2% were, of course entitled to their

A site called Sportslens quoted one of our own, Chris (@Christrutwin), as follows:

“Anthony Ralston is like a herpes virus, he only appears when you’re weak.”

What a sickening and utterly dreadful way of describing a young footballer who is

out trying to do his best for our beloved Hoops!

What goes through the mind of people like him as they write such wounding drivel

about another human being and then, no doubt, boasts about it to all his so called

    mates!

I sincerely hope that perhaps he might, one day, be within earshot of someone

who describes someone dear to him in similar execrable terms!

As far as I can read it, Sevco faces a rock and a hard place choice right now.

Kaput via administration very, very soon.

Or a long, lingering and agonising death when Ashley steps in and slowly bleeds the carcass dry.

Going on lovely Mike’s track record, I suspect the latter. That’s what he does. He gutted Newcastle like a haddock, but there’s open rebellion down there now. Maybe he thinks it’s time to move on.

Meanwhile, there are 40,000 blind and willing mugs to mercilessly milk in Glasgow till they catch on, which they never will, because They Arra Peepil.

Whatever way you cut it, Ashley has them by the balls. The added piquancy is that he really doesn’t like them. He just wants to sell things.
