Griffiths understatement nailing detractors

422

I heard Leigh Griffiths was being damned in a Scottish newspaper with a wide-eyed wonder about how many goals Steven Fletcher would score against Hamilton Accies, Ross County and Kilmarnock. Not Fenerbahce, Aberdeen or Malmo, who Leigh has scored four times against in four games, but didn’t rate a mention. Not even his goal against the mighty (cough) St Johnstone was recalled.

Leigh is the great underdog of our time. The Tea Cake Warrior who has reached above this allotted station. Hostile journalists are not alone in dismissing his potential, ask around, there are some in our own ranks.

Yesterday he responded, with wonderful understatement, to Paul Dykes tweet (below), noting the return he’s given compared to some of the more successful strikers we’ve had over the last dozen years of so, with “Not too bad I suppose…”
capture-20151007-115954Goal scoring stats don’t tell you everything. Griffiths, Hooper and McDonald have a better goal return in their first 50 Celtic games than Henrik Larsson, but they are nowhere near the player he was, but if you are paid to be a goal scorer, this is a pretty important measure.

What Larsson did after those 50-or-so games was kick on with impressive style, eclipsing the exploits of Dalglish, and gave a return only McGrory could match. It’s totally unfair to ask Leigh to emulate Larsson, but there are comparisons with the immaculate Swede, Hooper and McDonald he achieve. All of them scored big goals for Celtic in important games.

When given a chance, Leigh has delivered in Europe. He never played for Celtic against Oldco Rangers, but he opened the scoring in an important League Cup semi-final against Newco last season, and he shows none of the complacency one or two on the above list were, on occasion, accused of.

A “bunch of Scots wrinklies” are walking through the Grand Canyon from Friday to raise funds for St Andrew’s Hospice in Airdrie.  The Hospice costs thousands of pounds each week to carry out the work they do.  Have a look here at what one of the “wrinklies” has to say about it.  You’ll no doubt read more from Weeron inside.

Got left in Amsterdam 4 of us..Had to get the train to Antwerp with POAK Salonika fans.. Wee guy gave us a lift to Eckeran, met up with bhoys fae the bus and they said “where ye been “.. Massive Celtic support behind the goals, Cascarinio hit the segregation fence at least 6 times..

  5. Watching the Tory party conference

    Summary,

Only 200,000 votes more for yes, and there would have been a nasty divorce, but only because nobody wanted the welsh weans.

  6. My boy was in Poland last Wednesday. He was visiting Auchswitz and was understandably shocked at the scale of the place and the magnitude of the horror that occurred there.

He was at the game on Thursday with me and went by himself on Sunday to Hamilton. He’s 17. He came back and talked about the Police activity at Hamilton which he described as sinister. He’s not attached to any group other than the supporters bus.

The video posted earlier and the denial of civil liberties therein and on a wider scale at Hamilton do not show the Police doing the job we pay them to do. It’s wrong.

Makes me think twice about letting my boy go to an away game on his own. He wants to study law and indiscriminate police targeting could prevent that. Scary thought.

  7. No worries, Mighty Tim,

If anyone else wants a Dublin1916 poster please e mail me @ dublin2016@mail.com.

Could that site be a cunning plan by the Green and Whyters to invalidate any prosecution/trial because of advance disclosure of salient pesh?

Hope you are well and that you have a fab time with all the gang this weekend.

WC. I’ve met your son. He’s an easy going guy with some steel of morality me thinks. You’re right to be worried that he could react in a way that could jeopardise his future career. But that speaks volumes – negatively – about the police, not him.

I watched the video in full. I was embarrassed for the police, most especially the condescending female officer. Tell your mum and dad to come into the police office…..no tell your mum and dad to watch this and see how far you’ve slipped from their pride at your tulliallan passing out parade.

We need to act. The auld yins. The lawyers, the business folk, the teachers. We can’t allow this to continue unchallenged.

And respect and power to the young mhan in the video. His composure and maturity were admirable. Me? If gave said what I really thought and been in the back of the meat wagon.

    Great post.

Banner gate in Hamilton should be shared with Tony Hamilton head of Celtic Media just for starters, it will help sow more seed of existing doubt in Celtic hierarchy, regarding the OBA.

It won’t alter the focus to focusScotland, because injustice and policestateism will occur again but ‘off camera’ .

The problem is societal in relation to ‘Celtic Spotting’ and indeed the ole promised ‘Celtic smashing’

At this juncture, the locus is back firmly with Celtic, this is a Celtic issue not with respect Accies, and should be taken up by our club, and the auld yins. The lawyers, the business folk, the teachers.

Just watching a report on State Broadcaster One, about Syria’s attempt to qualify for the 2018 Russia World Cup Finals – tough shift.

Half the team, including their star man, are either unavailable, due to fighting in the conflict at home, or refuse to play for the national team due to perceived support of Assad’s regime if they do. They are currently having to play their home games in Oman, and their away trips are not exactly local, with journeys to Japan, Singapore, Afghanistan and Cambodia (!???) on the itinerary.

The very real impediments to their progress make excuses like “Mulgrew is unavailable” seem lame in the extreme. However they face Japan at “home” later today, with an impressive played 3, won 3 record under their belts.

I don’t claim to know the solution to the dreadful problems faced by Syria today, but I for one, wish them well. I can only think that success for their football team has to be a force for good.

  17. Good morning friends, the quietest moonhowler shift in a long time is officially over ;-)

A dry and calm start to the new day in ole EK although dark clouds rolling in as I peek. Mild though.

  18. Neganon 2 is absolutely correct….Scotland is a nation of anti-Irish-Catholic-Celtic folk who will stop at very little to enforce their racial-sectarian-hatred unless…their met with a, Celtic board full of rebellious Celtic supporters.

    That is not the case.

The racist-establishment recognise this to be the case and, exploited the situation to their advantage after the ‘shame-game’ were, Celtic had 3 players booked and yet….the establishment knew full well that, all they had to do was snap their fingers and, Celtic’s board would, tuck their tails between their legs and kowtow their way to a hastily convened(a trap or, set-up) Gov-Summit and, bend over and take what ever was decided by the masonic-orange-beaks, for an easy life and, in effect…sell their souls and, the souls of every Celtic supporter to all the devils in hell. They sold you out. They sold out then Celtic manager, Neil Lennon who, in the end up…took the fall for the ‘entire’ fall-out from the shame-game. Basturts is the only way to describe the Celtic board.

You know what…the only way that all of this farsical treatment can be hammered on the head…?

Tell the Celtic board that you will not pay to go to see a football match were…the chances are….sooner or later, you’ll get yourself a criminal record….whilst the Celtic board who were the catalysts for this law-act to be rubber-stamped.

I said at the time that, had Celtic had a Neil Lennon-type on the board then….this ‘stitch-up’ would have been booted oot the windae!

Instead, the collection of, nodding-Churchill-dogs who run Celtic, have thrown you to the dogs.

In an ideal world…Cetic fans would tell the board – “We wont be back until you(board) fix this…we wont be branded as criminals whilst, paying you(board) to wine & dine with all the devils in hell!”…..FIX IT!

In other news….some folk were asking how much the board got for loaning ‘your’ stadium to the opening ceremony of the Common Wealth Games and, 2 domestic cup finals last season?

My guess….it dizny matter coz….it’ll probably appear from nowhere to save the huns from dying again.

Celtic’s O## F### Board should be sacked but, they know that….apathy will save them for another few years yet…imho.

    Take care Tims…Off oot. YNWA.

  19. So, the situation in the ole Euros is that, with 2 games each still to play the following teams remain in contention –

    Germany 19 points

    Poland 17 points

    Ireland – 15 points

    Scotland – 11 points

As Poland play Ireland in their final game one of those countries must reach (at least) 18 points, a total that Scotland cannot achieve. So Scotland’s aim is to finish 3rd, realistically aiming to finish above Ireland. In fact as Scotland have the better head-to-head then drawing level with Ireland on points will be enough.

Scotland have Poland at home then visit Gibraltar. Ireland host Germany and then travel to Poland.

So here are the scenarios –

If Ireland were to win either of their games, Scotland are out.

If Scotland lose either game, Scotland are out

If Ireland secure just 1 more point Scotland need 2 wins

If Ireland lose twice, Scotland need 4 points – a draw and a win

    Scotland will win tonight.

  21. I like the RD comment, Stokes must comply, I think he is more or less saying, your not pulling the wool over my eyes.

R D gives everyone a chance, in some cases two but that’s as far as he bends, he lets them have fun time, pal time, kid on time, but when he cracks the whip I think he expects the players to perform, and train hard.

Malingering and acting the clown during that period is a no no I think, whether mr Stokes is toeing the party line only the coaching staff will know that.

But he isn’t injured, and he is not even close to first team football going by last weekend, guys like that you don’t want hanging around your workplace, they bring nothing to the team, IMO.

Looking forward to a few beers and blether with you on Saturday. Hopefully TD67 can join us.

  23. Ffs, I swear he gets more make or brake games than any other Celtic manager I’v ever known?

Celtic boss Ronny Deila’s future may hinge on winning two games against Norwegian underdogs – an irony given how he started his managerial career.

Deila arrived with a reputation for getting the best out of underdogs, having unexpectedly led Stromsgodet to the Norwegian title in 2013. Now Celtic face Molde FK in a Europa League double header on October 23 and November 6, with the results pivotal to deciding the Glasgow side’s European fate this season.
