Griffiths walked away looking the grown up

426

Last night’s performance was at the upper end of my expectations.  We were sharper than I remember from a year ago, although not Nadir Ciftci, who is a couple of weeks behind, and looked a couple of pounds over, his team mates.

You could see how Stjarnan did so well against Lech and Motherwell last season.  They defended with six along the back and have a good keeper.  Celtic’s passing looked off, but I think that had as much to do with Stjarnan’s denial of space in advanced areas.  The chances came when we broke forward having allowed space to open up 50 yards out, and from a set-piece for the opening goal.

Stefan Johansen was my man of the match, he was the creative fulcrum behind all that worked.  And yes, Stefan, in a public spat with you, Leigh Griffiths, a man who eats Tea Cakes on the bench and cultivates a rascal persona, walked away looking the grown up.  You think about that for a while.

Emilio Izaguirre had a horrible World Cup and started all over the place last season.  It was months into the campaign before people started to notice his consistency was back, but the head seemed as though it was still on the beach last night.  He would have been punished severely by a mainland European team.

Ronny started with his traditional 4-2-3-1 but for a while after Leigh replaced James Forrest, he played a 4-4-2, which coincided with our best period of the game.  Nadir had someone to link with, instead of being isolated in a sea of blue shirts, resplendent with the old World of Sport logo.

It was great having Mikael Lustig back and although Dedryck Boyata was not challenged defensively, he was clearly on a par with Lustig as being a defender who is comfortable on the ball.  No mistakes and a goal is pretty much all that could be asked of him.

RSL seems to have reluctantly ‘gone off air’, bar replies to that particular thread.

Still, some of the replies make it worth a look occasionally. Let’s hope the huns ignore the seemingly well-informed posters there.

If Celtic were to win the CL, hypothetical I know, the only people enjoying it in this country would be the Celtic support, and perhaps some patriotic fair minded provincial.

If Man United win the CL the whole of England will be spewing, apart from the United fans of course, the English Msm and the powers at Lancaster gate.

    Thats the difference.

I spoke in person to Berti Vogts when he was Scotland manager. He told me he was astonished the night of Seville, when he was at Largs with the Scotland squad watching the game, to see half the audience jump up out their seats in delight when Porto got the winner. He asked me why this was the case when their were few Rangers rivals there (two or three I think) , and mostly Anglo Scots. Berti also told me he couldn’t get his head round the bigotry in Scotland.

    ——————————————————-

I have a friend who has 3 daughters, one of whom was the girlfriend of a 1st team player at Dunfermline. The player told me directly that when Celtic played Porto, he watched with a bunch of other Dunfermline players. He stated that when Porto scored they all jumped to their feet and cheered wildly. The last thing they wanted was Celtic winning.

I’ve always seen the comments that Chris Sutton made re: Dunfermline when they lay down to the huns as a clear statement of fact. Everybody knows they did. They just don’t want to admit it and give the game away. Similar behaviour to the current kidding-on sevco still being Rangers. They’re not and everyone knows it.

  7. Wow. BBC Scotland news completely ignores the country’s football champions qualification result from the previous evening. Not a peep. Aberdeen and ICT covered in the Euro tonight.

Love to see Celtic ban them completely; what’s the point in allowing them access if their bitterness prevents them even doing their jobs properly?

I happily and easily support any Scottish side in Europe, even the Cabbages, but with one exception. Have never been able to give Rangers support from the 80’s ’till they died. Don’t have to worry about Sevco for a while. Good result for your first game.

  11. You couldn’t make that up. How bad is their pain? We are the Champions and not even a mention. And we fund them!!!!!!! Mind you, if Holyrood controlled them, we would be enjoying a diet of the deid team and Mrs Budge’s lot.

  12. …………..Did “Carol Smilie” Mk 11 forget about the oul’ tic or does it just hurt too much?

  13. I used to want all other Scottish teams to be kicked out as early as possible because it meant we didn’t need to share the TV money, well for all the good that done the team on the park I’m now hoping for better results from the other teams. The coefficient point will do us a lot more good than buying curtains for the stadium.

  14. Griffiths aside I thought our bench was very poor last night..worrying.

Saw few people say stokes before Forrest .. 100%

Check the facts..anto is far more productive with assists and goals.

Fair play mate. I live in Edinburgh now and (naturally) have plenty of friends who are Hearts & Hibs fans. If I don;t have a ticket for a game where Celtic are playing one of the Edinburgh clubs, it never seems to be much of a problem to go and watch it in the pubs with them. Maybe I just know the rational ones? ;-))

  16. From A Bill McMurdo article-Sporting Fairness v Sporting Integrity 2012.

    Truly deluded.

I want to contrast the way Celtic-minded people seem to think with a Rangers mindset.

I remember back in 1993, after Marseille had won the European Cup and it was discovered that they had cheated in the French League to give them an advantage going into the European Cup/CL Final, there was a story doing the rounds that they could be stripped of the Champions League title.

Apparently David Murray, then chairman of Rangers, was offered a chance by UEFA to replay the Final against AC Milan but he turned it down, saying that if Rangers couldn’t win it when they had the chance, they didn’t want another one.

I fumed about this for years, thinking of the opportunity blown for Rangers to win the big one. How could Murray pass this up? Marseille were cheats and didn’t deserve it.

Recently I have come to see exactly where Murray was coming from – if, of course, the story had any substance and the offer was genuine.

When Rangers were docked ten points last season for going into administration, effectively handing the SPL title to Celtic, Celtic grabbed it eagerly and gratefully, spending a lot of time and energy telling the world how much they deserved it.

    I thought of one man.

    The Rangers manager, Ally McCoist.

I realised that if the ball had been on the other foot and Celtic had been docked ten points, Coisty would have felt cheated. He himself would probably have called the title win hollow, if not tainted.

    As would most Rangers fans.

That, in a nutshell, is the difference.

Rangers don’t look for advantages or leg-ups or pauchles.

Rangers want to earn their victories the hard way – on the pitch.

Bluenoses don’t want privilege or being accused of having won a tainted title.

I know this May have been posted before but I can’t stop laughing at its contents.

Anyway good result last night, onwards and upwards.

I, too, am astounded of forehead ( well, not really but I should be) at the Beeb`s omission of ANY comment whatsoever on Celtic`s victory last night. So much so, I have sent this complaint of the the BBC. I hope as many Celtic supporters as possible follow suit with their own protestation over this downright bias:

“Celtic FC played in front of 48,000 plus in a Champions League qualifier on Wednesday evening. On Thursday evening, Reporting Scotland reported on Aberdeen and Inverness CT`s upcoming Europa League games. They had interviews from the respective Managers. Celtic`s victory was not mentioned. This is certainly not the first time this has happened. When I lived in England, I respected the BBC`s impartiality. In Scotland, as regards Celtic FC, this is certainly not the case.My concern is that this complaint will be dealt with in Scotland and I will receive a predictable brush off. If it is dealt with by the BBC in England, I can expect a fair hearing. That, alone, should open the Beeb`s eyes to the fact that something is rotten in the state of Scotland.”

We really should swamp them over this.

I haven’t played pool for a team for 10 years.

I used to play pool every weekend for 3 or 4 hours in my local pub.

Winner stays on ,and I would hold my own.

I stopped going to the pub over 2 years ago.

  30. Frankly I analysed the game no further than this:

“Meaningful game in July FFS. Team still coming together. Should have scored more, but won 2-0. Well placed to finish the job in Iceland. Bigger tests – but also more fitness, player understanding, and finely-honed tactics – to come.”
