GRIFFITHS WINS PLAYER OF THE YEAR ACCOLADE

CELTIC’S 39-goal striker Leigh Griffiths has deservedly won the Premiership Player of the Year in the vote by his fellow-professionals.

The honour capped a great weekend for the international frontman after he celebrated the Hoops’ fifth successive title triumph with a brilliant goal in the 3-1 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

The 25-year-old had to beat off competition from Dundee duo Greg Stewart and Kane Hemmings and Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes.

Scotland manager and ex-Parkhead gaffer Gordon Strachan made the presentation at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow last night.

Griffiths is now aiming to take his goal haul to 40, at least, and the Dons are now in his sights when they visit Parkhead on Sunday for the 12.30pm kick-off.

The last Celtic player to net the magical 40 in a season was the legendary Swede Henrik Larsson who achieved the total 12 years ago.

Griffiths also has games looming against St Johnstone away and Motherwell at home where he could crash the remarkable tally.
