Griffiths with a point to prove

267

I know Leigh Griffiths has more experience behind him that road ahead.  He may prove to be a challenge for Ange Postecoglou to manage (although I would not assume so) and I would hope he is not first choice striker for Celtic ever again.  However, if we need a goal in the qualifiers, at McDiarmid, or in a Hampden cup final, and things just don’t seem to be happening, you know Leigh can change games and seasons.

His story is fundamental to our second nine-in-a-row, the last season in particular.  His commercial value is significantly less than it was when his last contract was agreed; Celtic’s option to extend for one-year would have flattered him.  The one-year deal announced today is almost certainly at a lower rate, but right for Leigh and for Celtic.

If athletes perform best with something to fight against, Leigh will have the words of Neil Lennon injecting his veins with adrenaline.  He has a point to prove, watch him do it.

I know there will be consternation amongst a few on here that anyone deems to suggest that Scotland needs the ‘big two’ to survive. Of course stating this obvious fact does NOT in anyway condone, or, forget, the years of wilful wrongdoing at Ibrox.

    ———

    Consternation bit of an exaggeration.

I would think a lot of Mr McKay though if he acknowledged that what you refer to as “this obvious fact” has been condoned and encouraged by Celtic.

One mistake Lenny made last summer was placing too much importance on his partnership with Eddie. When he came back totally unfit we had no option but to revert back to a system that had failed in the previous season

Angry can’t possibly see him as an essential part of the team

    ———————————

I get that was the case at the start of the season but surely a couple of weeks extra work with a trainer/nutritionist etc. and he would have been up to speed, what happened ? We are talking about a relatively young, professional footballer not an old man with a serious illness. I don’t get how he could have been unfit for so long.

    Sevco must be really skint.

  8. Today is Canada Day and I’d like to post a wee story about someone that is reckoned to be one of the best “soccer” players Canada has ever produced.

No not Owen Hargreaves or Julian De Guzman who played their international football for the outlanders and Netherlands respectively although both were born in Canada, but Jason who was a proud Canuck.

There’s a wee Celtic link here so bear with me, might be worth it.

Jason grew up in Scarborough, which like a lot of British North America was named after places in the “mother country” this one after the English town of Scarborough in Yorkshire, a diverse cultural community in Toronto.

For many years it was known as Scarberia due to the wide open flat spaces which was punished by brutal winters, now it’s called Scarlam, I’ll leave that there.

There is a strong undercurrent of racism in this country which was hidden for years; in fact the small town I now live in was once the home base of the local klan, not now I’m happy to say.

Although born in TO his family came to the country from Guyana so they were classed as one of the minorities that had appeared here after WWII and he could have gone down the same road as most of his Caribbean Canadian friends very easily, especially as there was a lot of money to be made in that area, there also was the prospect of a cell or an early grave..

His love of the beautiful game saved him from going down that route.

A four time MLS Cup winner, 7 time MLS All Star and named to the MLS 25 all time greatest his career was concentrated mainly in North America, although it should be noted that as a 14 year old he rejected an offer from A.C. Milan after a successful trial due to him not being ready to commit to leaving his home and native land.

2 year later though, along with fellow countryman as well as Caribbean expat Jason Bent he joined German side FSV Zwickau, this was NOT a pleasant experience mainly due to the colour of their skin and not just on the terracing but in the dressing room and on the field and again not just with the opposition players.

After one season with Zwickau Bent returned home while DeRo, not wanting to be seen as a quitter, stayed for another season.

On his return he was well sought after and played for San Francisco Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo before the opportunity arose to play for his newly formed home town team Toronto FC aka TFC arose.

The MLS actually own the players and each team has a salary cap, however a bit like the early days of our game there are ways for teams to induce players to come and play for them, Beckham changed that and the Designated Player (DP) spot became available to every team in the League.

TFC’s Director of Soccer promised DeRo 1 of their 3 spots, it never materialised so he went back to him, major spoofing continued to occur, “oh a wee mistake I’ll get it fixed” or “the boardrooms full of business men who know nothing about soccer leave it to me”, and on and on and on

Eventually the DoS and head coach were given the bums rush and he approached the new management team, the board had no idea of the shenanigans that wee two faced effer had played and no DP was ever on the table.

I’ll no mention here who the DoS was as his name should never be mentioned where good people meet.

Anyway Jason’s heart wisnae in it anymore and so he asked his agent tae try and find him a European club, especially after Beckham had joined LA and then was loaned out tae AC, a deal with Marseille fell through and then he got a call, Scottish giants want you initially on short term loan.

Even though this was during the MLS winter break TFC wurnae that keen but he talked them intae it as it would put the club on the world map.

As he told them this is one of the biggest clubs in the world, there are lots of Scots in Toronto especially Celtic fans, the Wexford CSC is based in Scarborough, so they eventually relented and let him go.

So on December 27 he’s on a plane tae Glasgow, after a good nights kip he heads tae Parkheid tae meet with Lenny and the team.

When he gets back tae the hotel his phone is lit up like a Christmas tree, it’s all over the TO papers that he’s in Glasgow without permission.

Eventually the MLS take charge and allow him tae train with us and he immediately hits it off with Sammy, they have a good rapport in training and look as if they will have a good partnership.

The club then take him along tae the New Year game at hades as they want him tae get the feel of the Glasgow derby where hopefully he may be playing in the future.

We are one point ahead of them and the build up is electric, in fact our team bus is pelted with bottles and garbage, as he says deidco despise anything and anyone associated with our club, you won’t read that in the SMSM, and they wurnae happy that day as Sammy won us the 3 points.

As soon as he gets back to his room he calls his wife, she tells him TFC don’t want him signing for us, not even a loan deal. Who says he asks, the answer jurgen effin klinsman, TFC had hired him as an advisor tae find a coaching staff so he brings in aron winter and paul mariner and DeRo is seen as the club talisman so he’s no getting sold.

DeRo tells them he’s no coming back and shows up for training with us, unfortunately Lenny advises him he cannae train with them as it’ll show Celtic in a bad light, on his own coin he spends another week in Scotland touring as far as the Highlands.

As it is he comes back but only plays 2 more games for TFC and is then traded tae the Red Bulls where he teamed up with Thierry Henry, couldnae have been that bad.

After a spell with DC United he eventually ended up back with TFC before retiring.

Looking back I wonder how many thought we had effed up with our now departed CEO sticking his nose in where it wisnae wanted, nowhere in his story does he mention big Gas Meter only Lenny who he loved, as a matter of fact he had only good things to say about Celtic FC.

In fact the only former Celt that is shown up in bad light is a durty wee two faced lyin bassa who stated he would rather quit the game than pull the hoops on, Big Billy should have ensured he did after doing a Gerry McNee on him.

    ——-

No commercial enterprise will ever pursue a policy that will alienate the majority of their customer base, or prospective customer base. To do so would be commercial suicide.

The “Rangers are dead” stories of early 2012 in the likes of the Herald & Record were some of the most surprising that I have ever read in Scotland. Needless to say when the ‘newco’ tripe was invented and then spun that it was not the club, but the company running it, that died, of course the media couldn’t wait to ‘jump on the bandwagon’.

Ibrox is on the up and therefore their fan base is greedy for ‘good news’ stories. Celtic is on a downer – this also counts as an Ibrox ‘good news’ source.

On a more serious note, the majority bias will also play large & loud in the unlikely situation of an independent Scotland.

No political grouping or, administration will ever pursue policies that will alienate the majority of the electorate. To so do would be political suicide.

“Bigger fish in a smaller pool” should be a warning to all.

That’s a good signing, alleged interest from all over in him.

From Shef Wed i think though!

  13. As it’s Canada day….does someone want to relate the tale of the 2 Canadian Ayrmen/sojers/navyboys who turned up at Ibrox, took a dod of grass each, for good luck, then got killed by a Japanese sniper as they walked doon Sauchiehall st the day efter?

  14. ….that story where the apparently chapped the front door n Scott Symon answered it, took them in, then fed them cos they were starvin n nat….know?

  15. I’m ok signing potentials who are athletic and have shown promise in decent leagues. BUT we need 2-3 players who have consistently performed at high levels – replace Scott Brown leadership and experience for the youngsters to learn from.

good business model signing projects BUT it need to be complimented with a strategy for the here and now!!

    I am happy with that.

  17. Welcome to Celtic Osaze Uroghide! 😊 🍀

I love this quote from the Celtic Website on Ange’s thoughts on not just our new defender, but on anyone who might consider joining Celtic Football Club:

“He’s excited about joining the club, which is important to me because that’s the first thing I want to hear from players, that they’re really keen to join us.”

This is manager-speak for what every true Celtic Supporter thinks, i.e….

“If you don’t really want to play for the mighty Glasgow Celtic, then Eff Off!” 😊🍀🤣

  18. Our new defender is 20 years old.

Think back a certain Danny McGrain signed for Celtic at 17 and played at 20 years old.

I agree with you . Even more importantly , I think Ange agrees with you !

  20. Any chance we can forget about the “manager” signs the players, I have said for years that this is not the case, I have also said that I agree with the system that the club are trying to put in place, I could name player after player that the manager did not sign, yer man from Shef Wed signed today is a perfect example, the quote from Ange tells you, unless he telling porkies…..

“It’s great. He’s someone that the club’s been tracking for a while and when I came on board, I managed to have a meeting with him and he’s a good young man, he’s very ambitious.”

So who at the club have been tracking him ? the scouting system we are devoid of, it’s sure is a mystery.

But, there will still be some who reckon Ange signed yer man.

Yes, it would appear that we are following a similar recruitment plan to the previous regime.

To be fair I have no issue with it. If we leave the subterfuge to the side for a moment, my main beef with Peter Lawwell was competence, or rather lack of it outwith his own field of accountancy.

Dom McKay is also on record saying he’s looking at modernising all aspects of the Club including recruitment, for me that means getting more professional and better at it.

If we are signing prospects I have no issue with that as long as we play them and develop them and let them go at the right time for the manager.

We can offer young guys like Osaze a lot, but we must have a clear plan to give him quality developement and experience.

In return we’ll have a first team player…

He may go on to play elsewhere at the top of the profession – VVD like

He may stay and develop as a Celtic stalwart – Lustig like

Or he may give us a few years as an important squad member and move sideways or down – Christie like

As long as he’s a prospect that can play first team football and not part of the roulette numbers game of the past, with the majority languishing in the development squad or bit part squad players, we haven’t got the time or resources for more of that nonsense.

    Hail Hail
