Griffiths with a point to prove

267

I know Leigh Griffiths has more experience behind him that road ahead.  He may prove to be a challenge for Ange Postecoglou to manage (although I would not assume so) and I would hope he is not first choice striker for Celtic ever again.  However, if we need a goal in the qualifiers, at McDiarmid, or in a Hampden cup final, and things just don’t seem to be happening, you know Leigh can change games and seasons.

His story is fundamental to our second nine-in-a-row, the last season in particular.  His commercial value is significantly less than it was when his last contract was agreed; Celtic’s option to extend for one-year would have flattered him.  The one-year deal announced today is almost certainly at a lower rate, but right for Leigh and for Celtic.

If athletes perform best with something to fight against, Leigh will have the words of Neil Lennon injecting his veins with adrenaline.  He has a point to prove, watch him do it.

John and his son had relocated to his roots in Glasgow West End in recent months.

He was in great form and a picture of health, less than a month ago in Chandlers Clydebank. A great day with John.

So sad. In shock in fact.

A lovely man with polar opposite political views to me.

We got on like a house on fire.

We were both former pupils of Saint Paul’s Whiteinch, which helped.

Garry, I never had the privilege to meet macjay1. He, for me, is a CQN Legend and I’m sure ‘Free Speech’ is his middle name. It takes balls to go against the majority

*I had some healthy debates with him we would never see eye tae eye politically, he was like the CQN Teddy Taylor, but in Celtic aye we were pretty much compatible there.

    RIP my friend

I had met John and his beautiful mixed race children before. You and him would have enjoyed each others company I am sure, having spent high quality time with both you and John.

With respect, I’m not projecting. I’m reflecting.

I am referencing players from last season. We both saw the contribution these players made as we finished 25 points behind the league winners.

I meant projecting in terms of forecasting the future and seeing these two, to my mind, minor, deals, as significant. I feel they will only be significant if we sign no one else of note and this is the height of our ambition. I do not expect much of either player given their recent history either but I’d still hope Leigh proves us both a little wrong and Tony gets to provide some cover until we recruit better RBs.

You are discussing potential signings, scouted by a potential scout.

To invite me to ‘come back’ after unspecified things have happened after an unspecified time has passed in as easy way of avoiding discussing our position now. Today. 1st July (well, depending where in the world you are)

You are right I did not specify it but I think you could have made a fair guess that I was meaning the end of the transfer window. I would not dream of shutting down discussion on July 1st or of talking up the poor recruitment status of our club facing a CL qualifier in a few weeks. However, my argument that these two contract option extensions will not prove to be significant in defining our season cannot, in any possible way, be adjudicated on July the 1st. For that part of the debate, we will need to have a passage off time to see which of our new recruits proves to be most significant in our early season play. ANd if the as yet unsigned guys do play a more prominent part then we can conclude that the Ralston/Griffiths extensions were not to prove to be season-defining. But if that is all we do in the transfer market- they will prove to be season defining as you say.

    We were negligent last season.

We’re not repeating that negligence, are we?

We were hugely negligent last year in mounting any league challenge. I would dispute that we were negligent in our recruitment last pre-season and early season. Most contributors were glad that we had retained Edouard and had recruited a battle hardened EPL CB and Greek international goalie to help the defence.

We do need to repeat, at least, that level of investment and I would suggest , even more, given our prospective loss of players. I am confident we will recruit widely but good recruitment is only part of it. We then need to form our good recruits into a team where last year’s players play better than they did last year and where the new players settle in quicker and better than Barkas and Duffy did.

So, no I do not think there was recruitment neg;igence last year and I am not expecting recruitment negligence (again?).

As for performance negligence, I hope not, but, as with last year, only time will prove either of us right.

Just hope our new Dutch Centre Half is as good as our last one.

Hopefully our Dutch goalie and him can develop an understanding. Cannae believe that Barkas having been born, raised and educated in the Netherlands, cannae speak English. Every Dutchman I have met, speaks English better than me.

The Huns supporters always look ugly and angry, especially when they win. Weird fuckers we share oor City with.

English supporters are identical ugly angry looking bastards when they win.

    The Age of Ange commences.

I believe, having done hours of internet investigating, that Ange Postecoglou is the one. The Dumbarton Harp CSC bhoys I spoke to today are in agreement with me.

    Exciting times ahead. 👍🍀💚

Shocked to hear the news about MacJay.

We conversed often in “the old days” on CQN – mostly about folk music. He played in bands in the 70s I think around Scotland, and he had a few good stories. I can’t remember what he played though.

As I say, shocked. Although I never met him, on a blog like this you come to feeling you know the people.

    Sad day

  15. MACJAY

I am sad to hear of the passing of Macjay. He was a beacon of light and integrity on here.

I always agreed with his postings and viewpoint – he stood firm for what he believed to be right – all he proffered on here was backed up by evidence and/or was well researched. He was never personally abusive, or indeed even impolite – he didn’t have to be because he was much cleverer & more erudite than his detractors.

RIP, I miss you & you are missed.

    HAIL HAIL MACJAY.

This performance from the people who were boasting that they were on the verge of wiping out Covid last summer🤣

Like everything else the SNPcult says it is just ‘Hot Lies’ – a mixture of hot air & downright lies.

    Why do you question that?

  19. I have missed Macjay’s posts over the period.

RIP Macjay, an eminent free thinking CQN,er who provoked debate and never followed the pack because it was the easier more popular option.

    Sincere condolences to the family.
