Guidetti awaits Fifa, Scepovic held nerve

1862

Celtic await ratification of Guidetti’s transfer by the SFA.  The player travelled to Glasgow yesterday afternoon and quickly concluded a deal with Celtic, but it took until late in the evening before paperwork arrived from Manchester.

Aware of the delay, Celtic applied to the SFA for an extension.  The SFA authorised the extension and subsequently received all relevant paperwork, Celtic believed they were over the line, but I understand we are in new territory with respect to extensions, so the SFA have asked Fifa for guidance.

Paperwork was submitted considerably before Manchester United completed the 2am signing of Radamel Falcao, so there is reason for hope, but it’s not clear in Glasgow what discretion the FA used to register Falcao.  The same may or may not be available to the SFA.

There are also time constraints, player lists for Uefa group stage competitions need to be completed by 23:00 tonight, and we can’t add the player until Fifa issue guidance to the SFA.

If Celtic wanted a more complicated transfer than Guidetti they surely found it with our Serbian striker, Stefan Scepovic.  Transfers involving influences across multiple countries are often difficult……

One thing Celtic are clear about is the endurance of the player, who had to sit through difficult hours in order to make the deal happen.  He kept his nerve as others tried to sell him to Getafe – who were under no Financial Fair Play restrictions.

We’ll do a wrap-up of the window tomorrow.

Now I may be the hugeist cynic but…

Posted a couple of weeks ago, maybe a month ago, a prediction that in the lead up to polling day pollsters would start publishing growth in the ‘yes’ figures and a significant narrowing of the gap. This would happen to get the ‘no’ vote out and signal the publication of the final scare stories.

The idea renowned polling organisations would manipulate to achieve such results might seem far fetched, and yet…it is coming to pass!

BTW I am not a ‘yes’.

  4. I think the fact that UEFA is punishing clubs whose fans have displayed Palestinian flags may suggest that the flags are having some effect.

UEFA is a corrupt, self serving organisation.

We can only speculate what has influenced them to take the action they have.

I remember editing that article mate. It was the moment I realised the magazine was going to be something very, very special.

As to your more general point, I thought it especially noteworthy that HMRC placed a final deadline on their “amnesty” on EBT’s and other forms of avoidance. It’s not gotten a lot of coverage in the media, especially here in Scotland, but I found it very suggestive of their growing confidence in this area.

For those not aware of that, they were running a campaign where you could go to them and make a settlement offer if you thought you might be in breach of the regulations. This campaign had brought in a lot of money from a lot people. They recently decided to close that window, and from now on will be aggressively pursuing everyone they believe is in violation, with no amnesty on offer at all.

They think they will win these cases, all of them, eventually.

There is no way in Hell they will halt until they have the scalp they want.

  8. UEFA’s stance on flags is motivated by is exactly the same things that motivates Celtic’s stance on GB.

Bob Kelly based his whole argument on the fact the SFA had no such rule.

He sited examples of clubs and players where severe sanctions had been imposed as a result of rules having been impinged. He invited the SFA committee to draw to his attention to the rule by which they intended to suspend Celtic.

    Obviously they couldn’t!

  12. Mickbhoy

That made me laugh but only because I’ve personally seen your fullsome, flowing locks!

  13. The point is, of course, if UEFA have a rule which explicitly states that the flying of the Palestinian Flag is going to result in club sanctions, then I do not want individual fans to challenge this directly by bringing their flags to the games and getting Celtic in further trouble.

However, I do not know if UEFA have had such a rule. To issue a sanction, you need to tell the clubs concerned what is sanctionable. I don’t think the individual fans or the clubs knew that bringing a Palestinian flag to a game was an offensive act, under UEFA rules. I am unaware of any attempt by stewards to prevent Palestinian flags or symbols being displayed.

So why are they picking on Palestine? They seem to be suggesting that, because it is a conflict zone, it is politically contentious. But they are giving free reign to the continual flying of Israeli, Russian, Ukrainian and Syrian flags. Why single out Palestine as an illegitimate state- is that not a political act of partisanship?

I assume that Basque flags and Catalonia flags are ok so long as there is not a concurrent resumption of terror campaigns by the separatist movements there?? How long does the terror campaign have to be in the past before it is safe to take a Basque flag to Sociedad, or a Catalan one to the Nou Camp, or a Tricolour to Cliftonville or Derry?

The sanction is an incoherent political statement by UEFA, Clubs need to know precisely what is and what is not allowed otherwise innocent mistakes, like those made by the Legia Match Secretary, will continue to be made.

So, can they articulate a reason as to why this has been singled out as an issue? If not, it should be challenged. Both by the clubs affected and by those of us who subsidise UEFA by supporting football.

While I do not support a mass waving of Palestinian flags (yet), I equally do not buy the “let’s ban all flags and symbols as they might politically upset someone” line. Going in that direction means passivity, allowing others to dictate what you can and cannot do without supplying a rationale that is agreed, at least by the majority of folk.

This is bizarre and unconvincing politics by UEFA. The sanctioned clubs have a duty towards common sense and good governance, to ask for clarification and for that clarification to be made public. We all lose if these things are decided by whim or dictat, or behind closed doors.

Made no comment on the matter. I simply suggested reading an item on it.

My own view on these things is that when God finished creation, he should have stood back, looked at what he had done and immediately scrapped money, sex and flegs and saved us all a hell of a lot of bother.

  17. Wave the flags outside the stadium, from your car or bus on the way to and from the game, maybe even fly them from your house and UEFA won’t be able to touch you or Celtic.

Don’t you think it’s more likely that the polls are showing a closing of the gap simply because there is a closing of the gap?

That certainly reflects my experience of talking to people. I think the vote will be on a knife-edge.

On a separate note, we continually hear from Yes voters that they are voting for a fairer Scotland. It’s usually not specified how this would be achieved but the obvious conclusion to draw is this would mean higher taxes for high earners. Anyone else think the same people will be complaining about our club being unable to attract high earning football player who don’t fancy higher taxes than a Tory run England?

Not commenting on the morals of this, just the practicalities.

The whole HMRC/Murray International/ Rangers/SFA saga has a distance to run yet and in more than one direction.

It is a ponderous slow beast with many ( for some ) dangerous heads many of which have not been seen in public yet.

The cases referred back to the FTT by agreement will cause considerable discomfort for some although whether that is discomfort that becomes public is yet to be seen.

My guess is that at least some of it will.

However, HMRC are still battling away to turn the tap further so that there is a veritable tide of tax cases and penalties that have to be addressed by Murray and others in the loop.

  26. I watched the Guidetti You tube video. Clearly he’s a world beater, but if you watch nothing else it’s worth watching the vid from 2 minutes onwards, fabuloas trick the lad pulls out.

Talking of Youtube i remember watching the Amido Balde one when he joined, was left amazed a tthe number of MISSED chances that made his highlights reel, there was even a missed penalty in there if I rememeber right!!
