Guidetti, life without the death-wish opponent

845

I see the story that Feyenoord are chasing John Guidetti has lasted more days than I expected.  John Guidetti is a likeable guy and seems to have enjoyed his time at Celtic, but he desperately needs to show some form before the end of the season if he is to attract the attention of Feyenoord or any team of that calibre.

One aspect often overlooked about Guidetti is his inexperience.  The player is still only 22 and had started only 30 games before arriving at Celtic Park last season, there’s a good chance that by the end of the season he will have played more games for Celtic than anyone else.  On paper, a season at Celtic was a chance to sort his career out, grab first team football at a prestigious club who were short of a centre forward.  Conversely, being kept out of the team by Leigh Griffiths will damage his reputation.

Barcabhoy sent me an interesting summary of Celtic’s material loss since the liquidation of Rangers.  The figures below compare the three years before Rangers liquidation with the two and a half years since.

As you see, even though we are comparing a shorter time period after liquidation, Celtic’s turnover and profitability is still miles better than when we had to compete with Rangers.

This should end any nonsense about Celtic needing or in any way missing Rangers.  We lost some revenue streams: domestic commercial and ticket income, but the slipstream to European revenues have more than made up for the gap.  More importantly, we are also no longer caught in an arms race with a death-risk opponent, allowing us to bring costs below income and plan longer than the current season.

Both Swindon seats are marginals, close between Labour and tories. I do my bit simply by replying when asked-I’d prefer you to vote Labour. But as long as you don’t vote tory, that’s ok.

I despise them as much as I do the huns. I think it’s their sense of entitlement that does it.

As long as the money was shared on a pro rata over per capita of all clubs retrospective annualised average attendance figures I might not have a problem with Celtic’s just rewards being diluted a wee bit to prop up others failures and shortcommings.

Or should the money generated by Celtic Supporters just be handed over to other teams so they can buy a calibre of player that would allow their teams to gub us?

P67 – Great figures, but what was our record in Europe during those six seasons?

In recent times, we’ve had teams who qualified for the CL group stages and punched above their weight. We are now in a position that we would just be happy to negotiate the CL qualifiers to trouser the group stage money and increase the sale value of our best players.

We might be profitable now, but the overall quality of the first team squad has been in decline for a number of years. The Forster/Wanyama/VVD/Gordon acquisitions have been great pieces of business by the club, but some serious investment in the overall squad quality should be possible without breaking the bank.

With respect, my question was about a ‘weakened and providing no serious challenge on the football front’ huns.

I think the answer is that Celtic would be more profitable.

And I think that determines how the Celtic board deal with matters.

It’s rational and logical as it is unpalatable.

Since Peter Lawell stated no Sevco has cost £10m, it has been used as a stick to beat him in some quarters. But he wasn’t lying. It has probably cost £10m for sales revenue. But that is just a headline figure that is always grabbed by media etc. Turnover is the headline figure and it is obviously important to any business. But anybody that knows anything about business will tell you, it’s all about the bottom line figures. Not the headlines. Bottom line is, we have never been in better shape. Let the new regime at Sevco keep on chasing those headlines. Under this board of directors we’ll be just fine off the park. On the park is often more tricky. But I have a feeling we’ll be okay there too.

Think the SFA have got themselves into a mess on this one. Plus I get the feeling as I did with the VVD “sending off” that there is an old school element who think Celtic are open season and some others who want a professional, measured and fair approach.

On a scale of one to Henrik Larsson where is John Guidetti?

    ===========================

Still in the Stars In Your Eyes dressing room, trying to get the dreads right.

  25. Seeing as John Guidetti is the focus of the article, I thought I would provide some stats on our goalscoring this season so far.

    Top Goalscorers (All Competitions)

    John Guidetti – 14

    Kris Commons – 13

    Stefan Johansen – 12

    Leigh Griffiths – 11

    Anthony Stokes – 8

    Virgil van Dijk – 8

    Jason Denayer – 6

    Most Assists (All Competitions)

    Anthony Stokes – 14

    John Guidetti – 12

    Stefan Johansen – 9

    Kris Commons – 7

    Efe Ambrose – 5

    Scott Brown – 5

    Combined Goals and Assists

    John Guidetti – 26

    Anthony Stokes – 22

    Stefan Johansen – 21

    Kris Commons – 20

    Leigh Griffiths – 14

    Virgil van Dijk – 11

On the face of it those figures look good for John Guidetti as he is our top goalscorer and overall has had a hand in more of our goals than any other player.

However, we have to factor how many opportunities a player has had as it would unfair to compare a player who has played 50 games with someone who has played 10 times. Appearances also don’t give a true figure as someone may have 40 apps but all of those were late sub appearances so a total number of minutes played is a better indicator.

The following shows number of minutes per goal for our top performing players (total mins played in brackets):

    John Guidetti – 131.4 (1840)

    Leigh Griffiths – 147.6 (1624)

    Kris Commons – 182.8 (2376)

    Gary Mackay-Steven – 205.7 (617)

    Stefan Scepovic – 208.5 (834)

    Anthony Stokes – 321.8 (2574)

    Stefan Johansen – 351.4 (4217)

    Stuart Armstrong – 361.0 (722)

    James Forrest – 363.0 (1089)

The following shows number of minutes per goal or assist for our top performing players (total mins played in brackets):

    John Guidetti 70.8 (1840)

    Leigh Griffiths 116.0 (1624)

    Anthony Stokes 117.0 (2574)

    Kris Commons 118.8 (2376)

    Gary Mackay-Steven 154.3 (617)

    Stefan Scepovic 166.8 (834)

    Stuart Armstrong 180.5 (722)

    James Forrest 181.5 (1089)

    Stefan Johansen 200.8 (4217)

Again, using these metrics, Guidetti’s value is impressive with a goal or an assist every 71 minutes, and also leading the way with a goal every 131 minutes.

However, a lot of his good stuff was at the beginning of the season but since the turn of the year, his form has dipped in terms of goalscoring (just 2 from 561mins) but he has weighed in with 6 assists in that period and since the beginning of the year (2 goals and 6 assists), he has scored or created a goal every 70.3 mins he has been on the pitch. This is almost identical to his early season form and shows that he remains one of our most important players.

As far as I can tell we have. He’s called Ronny Deila.

We very few exceptions every player is better today that they were when he took over. He has shifted some dross out and brought in first team players.

I believe this is a pattern that will be repeated whilst he is in charge of the team.

  32. Don’t think its fair to compare JG with Henke as when Henke came to us, he was a seasoned pro at 25 with more than 150 games (inc. a world cup) under his belt.

His first season with us saw him score 19 goals from 46 games.
